I think that it was social inequality that played a big part in this story along with racism. Harper Lee emphasized the Tom Robinson trial, in the fact that Atticus could not win the trial no matter what, even with the solid evidence he presented to the jury. Social inequality was something big around the time that the author wrote this book. An example is that this book was the the ONLY book of Lee's that got published. Why? Because Harper Lee is a woman and she shortened her name to Harper Lee to perceive herself as a man to get her books published.

Michael Rodriguez | 16 comments Question 3: Most people in the novel are nice once you get to see them. For example, the kids all thought Boo Radley to be a sick looking man who ate cats and rodents, when in reality he was just a shy man who cared about them.
Atticus is able to see the good side of anybody because it's his personality. He is a kind and patient man who doesn't judge people before he knows them. I find it easy to not judge someone based on what I've heard about them or just looking at them or their past. I forget about all that and judge them based on how they act towards me and only me.

Natalia | 12 comments Many people in this novel are good people; however, there were many people who were given the chance and actually seen but were far from nice. Bob Ewell, for example was not only mean but dangerous. He shows violence toward Scout and Jem, because he resented Atticus. Mayella Ewell is another bad person, she was willing to kill an innocent man to save her reputation and herself. Atticus is able to see the good of people even with all that he has experienced because he is a honorable man. He is committed to helping an innocent man and seeing beyond his color even putting his family and his own reputation at risk. Atticus is wise enough to know life is full of injustices, and still is able to understand why Mayella Ewell did what she did. I personally wouldn't be able to see a person's good side if her or she hasn't been just to me.

I agree Jorge, thats my exact reasoning of why the title is "To Kill A Mockingbird" it is very clearr that Tom is the best example of the mockingbird.

Kelsey to your 2nd answer, i agree with all the descriptions of Scout, especially her being brave. It was very courageous of her to stand up to the many men surrounding Atticus at the court house that night.
