His early boarding school experiences taught him that if he kept quiet, he was less likely to be punished. But, in keeping quiet, Peekay hid his high levels of intelligence. I think that as Peekay grew up, he realized that blending in wasn't everything and that being an individual is important.
The use of the title in the book comes into play at a very early point. Of the three majors points where I noted the "power of one" was mentioned, they all seemed to mean something different, yet I could still connect them all. The first instance being back when Peekay was at the boarding school with the Judge and Mevrou. Even though he knew the importance of blending in, he also realized that every person had the ability to be independent. The second time being mentioned, the "power of one" held a meaning of courage to follow what is true and not what everyone else wants you to believe in. The final instance revolves around self-confidence.
I think that all of these things together make up the true meaning of the "power of one." Peekay first says that as long as the independence inside each of us stays, we cannot be destroyed. Well, if every one of us has the courage and self-confidence to succeed, our independence will never be lost.
