30.7 - Jennifer N's task: When I Was Young
Two of my favorite fall holidays from my youth were Labor Day and Halloween. Labor Day was the last hurrah before school began and Halloween was just fun with all the costumes and candy.

For this task read two books. You can choose to read 2 books from A or 2 books from B or 1 from each A and B.

A. Labor Day (September 5th) - Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer and the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white. The word labor has 5 letters in it and Labor Day falls on the 5th this year so...
Read a book that has only 5 letters in the title OR 5 words in the title OR read a book with a primarily white cover.
It is up to you if you want to count subtitles. A, An and The count as words.
Required: If you choose to read a book with a white cover please include the book cover in your post.

B. Halloween (October 31st) - Get your costume ready!

Read a book that has a main character that you could dress up as for Halloween. Books that have witches, ghosts, vampires, princesses, farmers, fairies etc. would work. Get as creative as you would like. Anything works as long as you can dress up in a costume that exemplifies a main character in the book.
Required: Please state the character and costume you could wear when you post.

message 19: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) Couple questions.

For option A, does Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell count as 5 words? Most of the editions use an ampersand instead of the word "and" so I wanted to check that that counts as a word.

For option B, does the main character have to be the protagonist or can it be any significant character who plays a large role?

message 20: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) | 109 comments Does Radiant Shadows work for Option B - the main character is half human/half fae.

I'll take Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - I did find multiple editions that used and instead of &.

The character does not have to be the protagonist but a main character. I'm not sure if significant is the same as a main character. What book were you considering?

It works as long as you can come up with a costume to wear.

I don't have a particular book in mind yet, just trying to clarify before I explore my options! I'll check back when I have something.

Emma Would "A" count for number count in a title? For example: would "A Brief History of Time" count as 5 words or only 4?

ETA (edited to add) I've rethought my answer and all words in the Goodreads titles are included. - So A is counted as a word so "A Brief History of Time" is 5 words and counts.

Angels will work. Thanks Meagan!

message 38: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) Okay, for part B, I'm thinking I'll use a Discworld book since I always try to squeeze a few into each challenge (actually I might do two Bs!), but I'm not sure how strict the costume parameters are - if they have to be like "traditional" halloween costumes or really anything. I'm assuming Carpe Jugulum will work since it involves vampires. What about the City Watch-centric books, such as Night Watch? The main character is Commander Vimes and the City Watch is basically like the police, so could this work as a police officer costume? Or in Thief of Time, I think the main character is Death, so could that count as a Grim Reaper costume or something?

Costumes do not have to be "traditional". They would just need to be recognizable.
