I've just purchased this for the group read. It is not a book I would normally choose but as I have enjoyed the other books thought I would try it. Will hopefully get a chance to start it over the weekend.
I did think about getting a copy from the library myself at one point - but then one clicked anyway cos I'm lazy!

I think it is fine to read hardback, paperback, library, scrolls, Kindle....Anything, as long as you read!
Just clicked, I've read the Day of the Triffids and the Kraken Wakes long ago, so I'm looking forward to a good read with this one. Thanks Cw.
I read it many a long year ago in my impressionable youth. In fact, I thoroughly 'did' John Wyndham at the time. (Aged about 15 - me, not him!) It will be interesting to see if I feel the same about it with the experience of age and vastly more reading behind me.
I can still remember the radio version of the Day of the Triffids after all those years. It was brilliant.
I seem to remember The Day of the Triffids on the telly when I was very young. It was very scary! (but not as scary as the Cybermen!)
Its going off thread but Quatermass did for me as a kid. It was a good reason to play up at bedtime, it got me banned from watching other scary stuff though.
@ Highwayman "but not as scary as the Cybermen"When I was little I was terrified of the cybermen, My children laugh at me now cos I am still frightened of them. Though one of my son's did agree that the original cyberman (back in the 1960s) were more scary than the modern ones.
I love this book - I read it over and over again as a teen. I recently bought it in paperbook so I'll have to dig it out of the TBR pile at the end of my sofa...
The Cybermen were the ones I was most scared of as well! Not the modern ones, they're just useless!I remember that I have read and enjoyed The Chrysalids - along with The Kraken Wakes and Day of the Triffids, but it was more years ago than I care to remember, and all I can remember between the three of them is how DotT ended. I'll be reading it again now! If anyone has downloaded the Amazon Kindle version, don't make the same mistake as me and try to read the introduction by M John Harrison - it sent me to sleep.
LOL @ Chookgate! thanks for the warning, I will skip right on into the story then. Now this looks more like my kindabook! looking forward to this one!
Just to everyone for voting for what, I hope, will be a fun read.I must admit to some fear - simply because it will feel terrible when the story does not work for some readers - but when that happens I honestly hope that I'll learn a different aspect of the tale and profit by it.
One thought in passing - Have we considered having a SKYPE conversation about these books?
It may be hard or not a cup of tea - but it may be an idea (Am off to create a wombat shaped Skype account).
I read this one (and all his others) way back when. Started it again last night and got to chapter 5. then I got fidgits and scanned a bit, went back but couldn't get into it. Wanted to go off and read Under Witch Moon from my tbr pile. So I did. I will sit this one out. Sorry.

@Pat - I think it's wonderful to want to read any book, so no foul :)
Skype's a fab idea, but I'll have to leave it. I use it to speak to my family and friends back in France, but as soon as the little one hears I am on he comes over and starts making funny faces and talking (and he talks for England), so he might spoil it for everyone, because no one else would be able to stay serious/be able to talk.
@Lorraine: I know exactly what you mean. Why is it that children know automatically just how to do that?
Well I'd say that Jack London's theory that the previous zillions of generations have an input in making you what you are is probably correct... I guess it's all in the genetic makeup of the human being, that as a child you're going to be downright cheeky and mischievous ! Did try and tame it with love though, but so far I have totally failed lol ! That's probably down to the zillions of generations of parents who have put in my genetic makeup that cheeky and mischievous was also cute !
Started this book this evening.I have to admit I am finding it quite a difficult read as one of my daughters has cerebral palsy so I find myself arguing with the issues that are arising.In saying that I am quite enjoying it hope it turns out the way I see it in my head.........mmm

I am really glad this one got the vote. I read Neville Shutes 'on the beach' a couple of months ago so this is going to be interesting.
So am I Karen, in fact I have done my Sunday chores and my kindle is poised for action.
Just got to do the veg, feed the family and the dog, walk said dog, pick up DD from station...then its me time!
31% I am enjoying it a lot and there could be a lot to say at the end!

The introduction is full of spoilers - I recommend skipping it. (The kindle version opens on the first page of the story anyway - so just read on!)
I've been reading this last night and again this morning, and loving it! So well written, it gripped me from the beginning. I'm just under half way through now. I'm trying to work out what had happened to the world before. As has already been said - there will be lots to talk about when we've finished reading this.

Started this last night, managed to do another few mins this morning before I had to go to work...so far I am enthralled!Left Kindle on charge so I can get stuck in as soon as I get home, as it was warning me it needed some energy. Glad I have been able to charge it whilst I work, dont want to be held up reading this.
I made the mistake of finishing this last night just before I went to bed! Was dreaming about it all night! Really good book, will read more of his books now.

ahhh i cant wait to start it now but i will finish the one i'm reading first shouldnt take too long...
I'm about a third of the way through the book. I'm finding it okay but it's not grabbing me like it is some people. Obviously, that's only my opinion & I understand others will love it.I will finish it though...
Same as Wendy, I didn't really like Day of the Triffids so maybe I am already biased, or maybe it's just the fact that I have been tired and found myself with my eyes rolling up several times before finishing a page, which prevented me from reading the story properly. Will keep at it though, I'd like to know what happens next...
@Wendy: The style does not change much, so if it's not working for you I'd probably say park it. As I see it not liking a book is a totally valid point of view. Being forced to eat sprouts didn't damn well work, even with the encouragement of "they are good for you" - seems to apply to books too :).... puts small bar of chocolate on the soapbox to hide the small claw marks.
I've not read through all the comments on this thread yet, folks. I'm feeling a bit blurry at the moment. My body has no idea what time it is...Just want to say I'm really pleased The Chrysalids is our current read. I've read it three or four times and have it practically memorised, I think.
I've got it in paperback on the island so will have another read of it when we get back next week.
Ooh it sounds so good I'm itching to get started but I have to finish "Deceit" first as I'm reading that with the other Kindle group.

Oh Wendy, do try Lord ot Rings again sometime. I have read it several times now and each time I seem to find something I failed to notice the last time, its one of my Desert Island reads! Mind you, I have tried to get my Dad to read it and he always gives up after a few chapters.
Phew, finished. What a great book. I will continue this over at reviews/discussions.

My brother loved it though which is why I did persist with it for so long. Just not my cup of tea though.
My favourite books include Shantaram and A Fine Balance.

Its a true story but reads like a novel of Gregory David Roberts escape from jail in Australia and gets to India, about his life in the slums of Bombay, working as an untrained Doctor on the fringe of the gangs and corruption of India.All human life is there. Quite violent sometimes. I got a freebie a novel by Sacred Games - Vikram Chandra which is also India, corruption but from the point of view of a policeman working in similar conditions.That was a good story too.
(getting us back on topic...)I downloaded the sample yesterday waiting at the Dr's and as a result I took the plunge this morning and one clicked the whole kaboodle.
Just waiting for lunchtime to get on with reading it.
