Sorry for going off topic but I'll take a look at the Vikram Chandra book. I've visited India twice & am going back next year so find these books so interesting.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Am sure no one minds if I thread creep again to ask Wendy where she'll be going in India. I adore India. We've travelled through most of the country.

Hopefully no one will mind. On our first trip we stayed in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur & Udaipur. On our second trip we stayed in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur & Udaipur (as well as lots of visiting places in between. Our next trip is to go further north: Delhi, Sirhind, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shimla & Rishikesh.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Fantastic, Wendy! I quite liked Chandigarh. There's a very interesting park there, full of 'sculptures'. I'm sure it's mentioned in the Planet. Do be sure to see it.
The journey to Shimla is marvellous. I had a few Michael Palin moments, sat on the steps with the wind in my hair. Very cool old colonial hotel in Shimla where we stopped for high tea. It was great fun sat there in our grubby clothes with our pinkies stuck out being served by a bloke in white gloves from a real silver service.
I'm looking forward to hearing all about your trip!

message 58: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Still tired, but up and over 40% now. I find I am getting quite interested in the book, I am curious to find out whether it's one of those books that are like Animal Farm and the likes of it, portraying the society or criticising it. Not reading the reviews/spoiler page, just because I'll go through all of them at the end :)

message 59: by Karen (new)

Karen | 11 comments 41% way through and totally hooked. I am surprised that I never read this when I was younger as I loved 'Day of the Triffids'.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Just started today as I wanted to finish another book first, strange it seemed to start at 4%.I went back and don't seem to have missed anything, strange! Could this be a taste of things to come? I wonder.30% through and enthralled so far. Thanks CW.

message 67: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments i saw somewhere sarah that there is an introduction but it has spoilers in it, so think the kindle starts at the beginning of the story and the introduction is 4% long or something...

message 68: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Thanks Jud,mystery solved. My imagination was running away with me!

message 69: by Phil (new)

Phil Harrison (hugorune) | 11 comments Pulled my old paperback copy out of my 'library' last night and I am already 1/3 of the way through. It's been so long since I read it that I really can't remember much about it so it's like I'm reading it for the first time again. Really enjoying it.

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments Wendy wrote: "I might give it a bit longer. There aren't many books that I don't finish - I don't know if I dare say it as many people don't understand but I gave up on Lord of the Rings!"

Well done for being brave - I didn't like it either and have tried it a few times. It wouldn't do for us all to like the same things now!

I just started The Chrysalids last night and I enjoyed the first chapter but then got lost in the second. Think I was getting rather tired though after a very long day at work so back to it this evening.

Wendy | 15 comments I'm now half way through...

message 72: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Finished this morning. Fantastic. It's been a long time since I have read a book of this type. I will have to look at this authors other works. Any recommendations?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Day of the Triffids, Sarah. I've not read it in years but remember itbwas very good. Simon is liking it at the moment, I believe.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments The Kraken Wakes, The Midwich Cookoos, Chocky, Trouble with Lichen, Web, Consider Her Ways, hmmm, have I left any out?

message 75: by Chookgate (new)

Chookgate | 74 comments Stop it! I've already got a huge tbr list, and it's less than a week till the next club read is announced! Did Simon say who was choosing it? Wonder what genre it will be?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I just bet it will be War and Peace.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I don't think I did say who would be doing it but I know what the book is subject to the person reserving the right to change their mind without notice.

I think you will enjoy the next book. If our discussion leader wants to reveal their identity that is OK by me. I am just concerned about bribery and corruption from within the author fraternity, and it is not certain that rum, chocolates, handbags, rhubarb and caramacs won't be brought to bear to try and influence the choice :)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments One thing is certain it wont be Woman vs Womaniser by that nice young man from "over there" ;o)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dang! I missed out on a real opportunity! No one tried to bribe me! You'd think I'd know a few things about bribery and corruption by now!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Lynne wrote: "One thing is certain it wont be Woman vs Womaniser by that nice young man from "over there" ;o)"

What a great idea.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I think we should ask JH to suggest a book for us...

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments He hasn't ventured over here. At least I don't think he has. I will put down a cunning trap to make sure......

Asda chicken nuggets are great.........

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well that should flush him out if he is anywhere around! But I meant someone could sneak over to the other side and ask him for a book suggestion.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Wonder what he'd say. Hmm

message 85: by Chookgate (new)

Chookgate | 74 comments He'd probably tell you it's against the terms and conditions and that as Gingerlily is in Ireland she absolutely cannot join a UK forum.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Chookgate wrote: "He'd probably tell you it's against the terms and conditions and that as Gingerlily is in Ireland she absolutely cannot join a UK forum."

Well I'd just tell him to start his own little exclusive one with him and his mum and a few like-minded people

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments Maybe if we tell him that Good Reads is awful he'll get over here sharpish to take the opposite view!

I do genuinely miss his sarcy comments...

message 88: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments By the way, am I just being blind or did the Woman vs Womaniser thread vanish this morning?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've looked at it today...let me check.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Nope. Can't find it. Shame.

message 91: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments Five of the 5* reviews have also disappeared. There's only 17 now and I believe there were 22 before...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Interesting....

message 93: by Cw (new)

Cw (confusedwombat) Waves tattered copy of Chrysalids at the naughty thread derailers and stomps off in a huff ...

... tripping over the Aldi bedding plants which are supposed to have magically planted themselves.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Weather was much too miserable for gardening here today, CW. Keep them inside where its warm and dry.
I had a look. Thought he may have deleted the ones with the comments but doesn't seem the case.

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments Cw wrote: "Waves tattered copy of Chrysalids at the naughty thread derailers and stomps off in a huff ..."

Sorry, CW. I do get distracted. I've not actually started Chrysalids yet so I shouldn't even be on this thread!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I expect he's gone off to watch Gardener's World with his bedding plants, Caroline. I think we're safe.

message 97: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Thanks Gingerlily and Patti. Will start clicking.

message 98: by Angela (last edited Aug 29, 2011 03:37AM) (new)

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments I have very mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I am enjoying it but on the other I find myself getting very annoyed at the holier than thou attitude of the church going men who think everything should be "perfect".

Its a compulsive book in many ways because I find it difficult to put down and I'm looking forward to getting deeper into it to find out what happens to David and his sister.

message 99: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments I started it! Only read a couple of chapters but enjoying it so far.

message 100: by Phil (new)

Phil Harrison (hugorune) | 11 comments Finished it over the weekend. I had an old paper copy that I had not read in many years and I had completely forgotten what happened. Really enjoyed it.
