message 102: by Karen (new)

Karen | 3 comments Hi, I'm Karen and I'm in the UK. I've been reading comics since childhood, and have had responsibility for purchasing graphic novels in the library service where I work for 14 years, although in the last year or so we've moved to supplier selection so I'm getting a bit out of touch :o(
For my personal interest, I'm mainly interested in indies, and don't really read any superheroes, war or fantasy type stuff, it's just not my cup of tea. I'll sometimes read Manga, too. At the moment I've got the latest Lenore to read :o)

Jade Warburton (missmgann) | 1 comments Hi, my names Jade :)
I joined because ah, well. I really enjoy comics!
I mostly tend to stay in the superhero genre (DC centred, bit of Marvel, occasional plunge into Vertigo) but now and then I read gn's that revolve around mystery or other such things.

message 106: by Melki (new)

Melki Hi!
I'm Melki. Fairly new to the world of the graphic novel. I started reading them to have something in common with my teenaged sons. (It was either that, or learn to play Magic: The Gathering. I think I chose wisely...) Now, I'm hooked.
I prefer zombies, horror, and quirky over superheros.
I'll be hovering around, looking for book suggestions.

Although I like all of them David Boring is right there. I also have to say that his works led me to Charles Burns...

I liked David Boring a lot, actually, but I have a special fondness for his shorter-form things, collected in Twentieth Century Eightball.

Burns I find interesting but often puzzling. Great visuals, but I often don't have any idea what to make of his stories.

I have a fondness for surrealism in all its forms, so Burns fits. I also enjoyed Twentieth Century Eightball...Ice Haven also rocks!!

Mark Young (markvictoryoung) | 2 comments "What's your favourite Clowes work?"

I can't say I dislike any of Clowes' stuff. Big fan of "David Boring" and "Ghost World," as well as the shorter pieces. I really loved "Wilson," of course, and just wanted to mention that Alexander Payne is set to direct a movie version of it shortly. Cool. But I actually enjoyed the movie version of "Art School Confidential," so I'm weird that way.

I'm Mark, by the way. Big fan of the medium. Lots of years reading independents, Vertigo stuff, D&Q, Moore, Gaiman, etc. Grew up on Asterix, Tintin, Peanuts, British war comics, Dandy and Beano. Not big on supers currently, but have a few old favourites still kicking around.

Liking the chatter so far. I'll try to chip in when I have something useful to say.

Cheers!

@Linda: Interesting, I'll definetely listen to it.

I've made a new topic to discuss Dan Clowes's work. Since he has already such an important body of work he deserves his own topic.

message 121: by Sacha (new)

Sacha (sachaburchard) | 1 comments Hey there, I'm Sacha from Copenhagen, Denmark.

I got into comics when I inherited my dad's old comics 6 years ago. I have been a regular reader of comics/graphic novels ever since. I tend to like many different genres, but I guess my favorite genre is noir -Sin City being my Bible!

I'm looking forward to pickup new recommendations from this group.

message 125: by Rebeca (last edited Feb 18, 2012 04:10PM) (new)

Rebeca (fancypraline) Hello everyone!

My name is Rebeca and I'm a relative newbie to comic books (couple years now). My first graphic novel was Aliens vs Predator and it's been love ever since. I tend to gravitate towards creator-owned comics/graphic novels (Lady Mechanika, Orchid, Fables) but I do have some familiarity with the mainstream superhero comics i.e. Marvel...Taskmaster being my favorite.

Just along for the ride :)

message 126: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Hi Rebeca. Welcome!

We've actually just been discussing the first volume of Fables. Check it here if you're interested.

message 128: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (noetichatter) Howdy, y'all! Long time comic reader, primarily superheroes. I am making efforts to branch out, though.

My biggest concern is how much $$ it always seems to cost me [and that's with reading lots of good stuff through Interlibrary Loan even]. ;-)

message 129: by Justin (new)

Justin Flint Hi im justin and im a huge comic book fan...mostly DC comics

message 130: by Paul (new)

message 134: by Michael (new)

Michael Scott (michaelscott) | 1 comments Hello, dear graphic novel readers,

I'm joining this group following Sergio's invitation. I got interested in this medium after having seen Maus in a bookstore in Amsterdam; a good fifteen years before, I've had early exposure to the Tintin, the Smurfs, and other children (?) series in the French Legacy's library, in my native country. I'd like to read the Top 500, but I also enjoy the random.

I am looking forward to getting inspired by and to share with you.

Cheers!

Sérgio | 459 comments Hello Michael,

Right now Marvel is running a limited series side story to the X-men called X-club. The collected graphic novel comes out in June I think. I'm really enjoying it. It combines my two loves, science and superheroes.

message 138: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Welcome Jaime.

There's been already some Vertigo discussions in this group so far, so I guess you might enjoy that.

Hi Niki, welcome!

What genre of graphic novels are you interested in? It would be easier to recommend books to you knowing this. :)

message 146: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Sounds like an interesting project, a really intimate story.

Hope you're succesful with this book. :)

message 147: by Robert (new)

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 294 comments Long-time comics collector, but about 2 years ago realized how many books, DVDs, etc. I could have if I dropped the monthly comics habit.

About every 6 months I'll catch up on the LSH titles, but that's about it.

I've shifted what comics reading I do to collections and graphic novels for the most part.

Haven't added most of my graphic novels collection yet, but somewhere around 100-200. (Including all first printings of Sandman collections.)

Mostly a DC fan (of the big two), but have always had a soft spot for the Avengers and Claremont-Byrne era X-Men. Plus a big fan of indys from the 80s.

Joined here for a mostly saner discussion of comics. So many other boards I see seem to have substituted name calling for disagreement.

message 148: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Welcome Robert and Alex.

Hope you guys enjoy your time here, discussing graphic novels and comics.

message 149: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (codenameblue) Hello! I'm Alexa and I come from the Philippines. I got into comics a couple of years ago, and since then I've never looked back. Until recently I've always been reading Philippine comics (we have a lot of really good artists, and even back in the 50s-80s they were recruited by DC and Marvel) but now I've decided to explore. I'm following the Batman chronology at the moment but I'm game for any graphic novel because I'm really interested in them. I'm really excited to read the graphic novels suggested here!!
