message 501: by Natosha (new)

Natosha (natoshamassie) I'm Natosha. I got into the graphic novels Transmetropolitan, The Walking Dead, and Strangers in Paradise when I was finishing out my education degree. I have recently started Runaways and am excited to read as many Erin Faith Hicks' novels as I can. Party on, Wayne.

message 502: by Matthew (new)

Matthew McCroskey (MajorMac) | 3 comments Natosha: Runaways is quite addictive and Transmetropolitan is a favorite of mine when I want to read a Warren Ellis rant.

message 503: by Katie (new)

Katie Anne (wojchik) Hello, I'm Katie Anne, I live in the Hebrides in Scotland. I've been reading graphic novels on and off for about 5 years now. Sadly I don't live near to any bookshops/libraries with a graphic novel section so it can be difficult to buy books off the internet without getting a feel for what they are like. Hoping to get some good recommendations through this group.

I like graphic novels along the lines of Essex County and Palomar, and am looking forward to re-reading Persepolis for the August read.

message 504: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (jonreadssometimes) Hello! I'm Jonathan. Ive been a member of this group for a few months, just now getting around to participating. I currently am reading the Walking Dead series and most of the Batman-related series. I also enjoy one-shots and limited series.

Rosa | 23 comments Hi I'm Rosalia. I'm a Youth Services Librarian at several public libraries and get to order graphic novels as part of my job. I joined the group b/c I suddenly find myself with extra time and I had received an invitation to join the group a while ago and felt like I could finally dedicate some time to it.

Sarah | 22 comments Dropping by to say hello, I enjoy slice of life webcomics. I still searching for a good dark contemporary graphic novel.^^

message 508: by Anne (new)

Anne Hello all~

I joined to get some help finding a graphic novel I've been searching for for a while. I read about a graphic novel that juxtaposes the lives of 18(?) historical figures of varied eras. The book begins with their births and ends with their deaths. Unfortunately I have misplaced the title and author of this graphic novel. Does anyone know the one I'm referring to?

Thanks for any help!
Anne

The only graphic novel that I can think of that might be like that is One Soul by Ray Fawkes. It's not historical figures though it's just 18 people at different points in history. There are 18 panels on each page showing the 18 individuals at the same point in there lives. (I think the 18 people are supposed to be a reincarnation but I'm not sure.)

message 511: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi. Lila here. I'm mostly attracted to nonfiction graphic novels, such as Alison Bechdel's memoirs or Josh Neufeld's comics journalism. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate other forms. In fact, sometimes I get lost in the inking technique or the page layouts of novels that aren't fully my cup of tea, so I guess I'm a bit of an art geek. Looking forward to exchanging views with others.

message 512: by Martin (new)

Martin (martinnl) | 16 comments Hi all. I'm Martin from the Netherlands and joined GR only recently. I love reading comic books and graphic novels, although I've only been reading them for about 3 years. Well actively that is. As a kid I read all Asterix books and the occasional Tintin and Lucky Luke. But then I pretty much lost interest in reading at all.

It was Nolan's Batman movies that got me interested in picking up a comic again. It was Batman Inc. that got me to pick up more Batman titles in periodal form, as well as other DC titles. However as I discovered after reading superhero books is that I far more enjoy independent stuff and stories that matter, if that makes any sense. I quickly turned from periodicals to trades, and preferably hardcovers. I've a couple hundred books with mainly DC/Vertigo titles, but as I buy more books the accent is shifting to more independent publishers such as Humanoids, Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly. Besides comics and graphic novels in English I also love European bandes dessinées, that I read in Dutch.

Some of my favourites books/series are Corto Maltese, Bouncer, Daytripper, Julio's Day, Y: The Last Man, Planetary, Gotham Central, Murena, The Incal, Sandcastle and Local. Favourite authors would be Grant Morrison, Steven T. Seagle, Greg Rucka, Matt Kindt, Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire, Hugo Pratt, Jacques Tardi, Brecht Evens, Ed Brubaker, Brian K. Vaughan and Jodorowsky.

Other than comics and graphic novels I mainly read study books ;) since I do a part time study. I wish I had more time to read literature of some Dutch masters like Harry Mulisch and Hella Haasse, crime novels etc. For now 'normal books' would take up too much time...

I hope to find more interesting graphic novels through GR and this group.

message 514: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (slytherdor1987) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Cat from DC. I was looking for a group that reads graphic novels so here I am.

I'm a very big Terry Moore fan. An ex got me into comics, although to be honest I haven't been keeping up with any in the last year and some change.

I started off reading 'Chobits.' When that was done, I started reading 'Strangers in Paradise.' I like Elephantmen and Fables Unwritten isn't bad. Saga is a really good series so far. I need to go to the comic shop and update my series though.

message 515: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) Hi I'm Lisa from South Africa.
I've been reading graphic novels since I was a kid. I love the fact that graphic novels are such a fantastic & far-reaching form of social commentary. My favorite series is most definitely the Xmen. I really identified with these social outcasts as a kid, love the art and story lines; and still find their issues topical.

message 516: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Cat and Lisa, welcome to the group. Enjoy your stay here and please note there are 3 book discussions currently going on this month. Please feel free to join all the other various discussions in the group.

And Lisa my friend, it's great to see you here.

message 517: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) Hello, I'm Valerie from North Carolina. I am new to the group and to graphic novels (just started Dec. 2012).

I got pulled into graphic novels through urban fantasy spin offs. You could pretty much say this was the white rabbit to me, leading the way to rabbit hole.

Then, I entered a GR First Reads giveaway and won Batman, Vol. 2: The City of Owls. To give it a fair review, I felt that I needed to first read Batman, Vol. 1: The Court of Owls. And, down the hole I fell. :)

message 518: by Harris (new)

Harris Wypyszinski | 1 comments I guess i am new.
I am Harris and I'm from Boston. I love graphic novels because they tell a story through words and pictures, which I find really cool. I'm in high school and a lot of people don't have time to read everything, so I find it cool how fast graphic novels can be.

message 519: by Elijah (new)

Elijah Mullens | 2 comments I'm new. Just got into comics, I tend to like dc books but enjoy some marvel and dynamite. I like some older ones but mostly books from chuck dixons run on batman/ nightwing. Hope I get good recommendations for manga and comics! :)

Anne Belov (pandachronicle) | 2 comments Hi all!
I'm very happy to have found this group. I love reading graphic novels and comics (mostly of the talking animals, contemporary culture humor -Calvin and Hobbes, Get Fuzzy, Dilbert, etc.) I'm a big fan of Persepolis and David Small's memoir (which I can't remember the title of...sorry!) I write a comic that appears on my blog, The Panda Chronicles, and I have two books that I published, The Panda Chronicles Book 1: Your Brain on Pandas, and TPC book 2: Wheel of Pandas. I'm getting ready to publish the third book in the series, TPC: Nobody Expects the Panda Kindergarten.
Thanks for letting me join your group. Pandas are very shy and friendly and tend to be civil, so I'm happy that you have a niceness policy. Be the bear. You can find my books at http://bit.ly/ZCHk71 or via my blog, http://yourbrainonpandas.com
I look forward to hearing about what other people are reading. Oh yeah, I'm from near Seattle as well.

Nicole (popularmassacre) | 2 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Nicole and I live in Indianapolis. I'm a fan of the Sandman series. I've just started American Vampire and Fables. I've joined the group to find other comics to read and to maybe get some tips on how to keep up with the world of comics. I'm pretty terrible at it. :)

message 523: by Mel (last edited Aug 26, 2013 11:30AM) (new)

Mel (metermouse) | 50 comments Hello everybody!

My name is Mel. I grew up reading comics here and there that my dad bought me (Groo, Beetlejuice, Disney Comics) but I wasn't in love at that point. In my later teens (a little over 10 years ago) I basically lived in the library and noticed there were comics for adults!! I never had considered it before! After reading a few I was definitely in love! I love science fiction, drama, fantasy, mystery. Anything with a good story.

Confession: I have not read superhero comics. Though I am greatly interested in reading the Dark Knight, Arkham Asylum, Batman Year One storylines though.

I am excited to join this group! I love discovering new reads

It took me a while to cross over into super hero comics as well, and those batman titles are pretty much where I started. I thought super hero comics would be campy and predictable, but they weave some pretty amazing stories, adult stories. Pretty much all I read these days now. They are pretty much "science fiction, drama, fantasy, mystery" books about people in costumes. Some of the outfits seem silly at first but you get past it and will be surprised that the characters have depth.

message 525: by Queenie (new)

Queenie Chan (queeniechan) Hi, my name is Queenie Chan, and I'm a graphic novelist who draws in a manga style! Obviously I love manga and graphic novels (I read both), and while I lean towards manga, I love the older Vertigo titles such as "The Sandman" and "Transmetropolitan". Always looking for literary graphic novels to read too!

I live in Sydney, Australia, and I've been publishing manga-style books in the past 10 years. You can see my list of work on my profile (I haven't set up my blog yet!).

message 526: by Josh (new)

Josh Perks | 15 comments Hi all.
I have been reading the comic form for as long as I can remember. Started with the Beano in the UK, Asterix and Tintin, 2000AD then some Manga. More recently I have been reading Hellboy, Invincible, The Boys, The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil, Orbital, lots of X-men and other Marvel stuff, Hellblazer (how the movie Constantine connects to this baffles me) Locke and Key, Yossel, and a heap of other stuff. I have even been warming to DC a little in recent months :)

Thanks, Melanie. :)
The first 2 volumes of "The Dreaming" can be read online for free at my website (http://www.queeniechan.com/books/the-...). You can purchase the collected edition via the links I have on that page. :D

To Tim: Hi, Tim. If you already have a 'comic book' club at your university, starting a graphic novel reading group should be easy. What sort of comics do your club members normally read? If it's superheros, you can always start with Watchman or Sincity, or the sort of stuff that have crossover appeal.

That's just my suggestion though... You know your club members the best. :)

message 532: by Mateholion (new)

Mateholion Cabela | 4 comments Hi all,
I am kind of new to this genre of graphic novel but enjoying this medium of reading. I think I am hooked for life now to this genre. Have read Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, V for Vendetta and Watchmen. Will read Sandman soon. Looking forward to read Sin City and Tranmetropolitan too. Lets hope I get to discover some great graphic novels along the way.

message 533: by Allen (new)

Allen Rubinstein (allenrubinstein) | 76 comments Hi, everybody.

My name's Allen, and I'm what you call kinda hard core about graphic novels. I just started my website, comicsjuice.com, which I envision as becoming something like the AV Club for graphic novels, and I would love to hear from anyone who has an interest in writing about the medium. I have far more ideas than I can possibly write myself on the subject. Ultimately, I would like to start a non-profit dedicated to educating people about this art form and finding new readers and new markets. The field of graphic novels has grown so much and so fast, it's criminal that much of the public, still, has not only never read them, but has little idea that it's even an option.

I have read comics for more than thirty-five years. About twenty of those years ago, I decided I was no longer interested in superheroes, yet I continued to read and watch the comics industry grow up as I grew up. Now there's a flood of material available with spines and chapter breaks that have a beginning, middle and end as well as piles of non-fiction material, and the rate of release for these books is only accelerating.

I'm so excited about the state of this art form, and I consider it among the most creatively alive, vibrant and exciting media being released today. I regularly tell people that comics have what movies used to, and that anyone who's a fan of films made by Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers or Stanley Kubrick should shift their entertainment dollar to graphic novels. Thanks to the local library here in the L.A. area, I read three to five graphic novels a week in an attempt to stay current. I hope to publish in the next few years and start to build a critical reputation in the industry. If you've encountered anything by Paul Gravett, I draw a huge amount of inspiration from his work.

Looking forward to being in discussion with y'all. Nice place you got here. Roomy. Nice bookshelves.

message 534: by Corto (new)

Corto Maltese | 78 comments Hi Folks, my name is not really Corto Maltese, he just happens to be one of my favourite characters of all time.
I'm Bernd fom Vienna, Austria and my Love for Comics goes way back, actually Donald Duck taught me how to read, when I was a little kid. I used to have all of the Tintin and Asterix books back then, but lost them later on :-(
What brought me back to Comics as an adult was the work of Mr. Alan Moore. I read V for Vendetta and Watchmen at the age of 21 and was instantly hooked on the medium again. Soon after I found my way to all them "Berger-books" (which eventually would become the Imprint Vertigo) and haven't stopped reading Comics since then. I'm more into the Non-Superhero Stuff, but I dont decline them altogether. After all there are good stories to be found in every genre.
What's more to say? I'm also heavily into independent music, but that's for another forum, I guess. And of course I'm looking forward to good conversations and recommendations.
Ah yes, I'm not planning on reviewing everything I read to date, after all ther is also a dayjob, that wants to be attended to, but I'm willing to do so on future reads. Love, B.

That is so true, thanks for making that connection for me. That's probably a large part of what has drawn me to GNs lately.

message 539: by Cory (new)

Cory Kerr (corykerr) Hi, my name is Cory Kerr. I used to read comics as a kid, but was too poor (or to bad at managing my money) to afford many. I recently got back into Graphic Novels and now I'm addicted. It's awesome. I have filled up two book shelves over the last year and I'm loving it.

I also recently started doing my own comic. Doing this has really opened my eyes to the difficulty and power of sequential illustration and visual story telling. If you're curious about my first attempt at a comic, you can find it here: www.MixedHistory.com

message 540: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Hi, I'm Jim and I'm from the Philippines. I used to read a lot of manga before then I started little by little on to comic books. I have exactly one friend to whom I can discourse comics with, so I'm looking forward to discussing with more people. I read anything as long as they interest me. Right now I'm reading Persepolis and the first Young Avengers.

message 541: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Acocella Hey everyone! I'm Jaime, a video game design graduate and a graphic novelist who reads just about anything. So excited to have found this group!

message 542: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (sandrabbit) Hi everyone my name is Camilla and I come from a small country in northern Europe called Finland.
First of all I have to admit that I'm so glad a group like this exist! I read a lot of comics and graphic novels and I've been dying to find a channel where I can discuss them and do something with all my feeels. Secondly I'm a firm believer in the litterary quality and meaningfullness of graphic novels as a form of litterature people can take seriously. I'm a art history major and I've been thinking about writing my masters thesis of these very issues. if you have some litterature conserning this please shoot me with it.
I'm going to have a nice time here in this group for sure (and in goodreads to which I'm new)!

message 543: by Rust (new)

Rust Hey there, I'm Tom from Italy! I really like "smart" comics and graphic novels, but most of the people I know don't read comics at all or just read mangas, which i usually don't like. So here I'm hoping to find good recommendations and occasions to discuss. My favourite series are Morrison's the Invisibles and Moore's V for Vendetta. See you ;)

message 544: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Jaime, working for the video games industry is one of my dreams. You're a graphic novelist? What kind of stuff do you write?

Welcome Camilla, yeah a lot of people say that comics are a waste of time. I think when the comics industry was dying, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns single-handedly rejuvenated it. There are lots of comics too that don't tackle superheroes, like Blankets by Craig Thompson, Persepolis by Marjane Sartrapi and Maus by Art Spiegelman that just shows the comics medium can do more beyond heroes.

Welcome Tom, I read manga and comics, but right now I'm exclusively reading comics. Maybe you're reading shonen manga? There are a lot of great manga out there like works by Naoki Urusawa or Katsuhiro Otomo. I've never read The Invisibles but Alan Moore is a great writer. Hope you find more to read from this group.

message 545: by Rust (new)

Rust Thank you J. A friend of mine too is called simply "J", that's funny :). The only shonen i own are some fullmetal alchemist comics, not bad but as i said, not so good for me. I'm really annoyed by the characters suddenly pictured like in cartoons, sketched with silly smiles and that sort of things. But i know this doesn't happens on every manga. The authors you pointed out seem interesting, but I've never read anything written by them (though I've seen the Akira movie, really good, liked the eighties feeling). Any series in particular you would recommend? 20th century boys seems great.

message 546: by Jim (last edited Sep 20, 2013 02:43AM) (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Yes, 20th Century Boys is awesome. I have read only two manga by Urusawa, the aforementioned 20th Century Boys and Pluto which is a mature story set in the Astro Boy universe. I have seen the anime adaptation of Monster, one of his works. That anime is one of the best I've seen, and HBO and Guillermo Del Toro are turning it into a live action TV show. I'd say go for 20th Century Boys first, if only for the reason I haven't read the Monster manga.

Regarding silly sketches, I've seen my fair share of them, but sometimes the story takes over center stage that these silly drawings don't even matter. One perfect example is Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu, where the dialog is simple and the way the characters walk and run are so silly one can't help but laugh. That didn't matter in the end though, a good description of it would be Lord of the Flies on nightmare fuel, and it's one of my favorite horror stories of all time now. It was so suspenseful I forgave all its shortcomings no matter how ridiculous they were.

PS: My name's not actually J, it starts with that letter though. I'm new on GoodReads. :)

Seeing Myself on the Shelf Hello my name is Yalonda I am from Chicago. I have recently nose dived into reading as many graphic novels as I can. I am partial to non superhero graphic novels. I am looking forward to the conversations!

message 548: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Yalonda! I too like reading non-superhero graphic novels. My recent favorite would be Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli. What's yours?

Seeing Myself on the Shelf I love Asterios Polyp. I also like Habibi by Craig Thompson, V for Vendetta by Allan Moore and The Last Man Series.

message 550: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments I haven't read Habibi yet, though I've read Blankets by Craig Thompson. I've read V for Vendetta, and the first volume of The Last Man, and yeah, I think it's good. I guess I'll read it again till the end.
