Tad (tottman) | 74 comments I'm in the middle of the Wayward Pines series by Blake Crouch. Just finished Pines and now I'm onto the second book, Wayward. Really fast-paced, lots of surprises and twists. I really like where this is going.

I just hope M. Night Shyamalan doesn't screw it up for the tv series.

I finished Damoren this morning and it's a good action horror novel about monster hunters with special weapons they bond to. I'd recommend it to people like action and horror combined.

I'm finishing up a historical thriller by Robert McCammon, Speaks the Nightbird. It's not action adventure, its a suspence thriller set in colonial South Carolina around 1700. I'm enjoying it. Twisted plot, the narrator is a great fit for the story and a a lot of really twisted characters.

And trust me, this town needs a new Blacksmith in a bad way!

message 4215: by David (new)

David Dalton | 152 comments Death of a Citizen (Matt Helm, #1) by Donald Hamilton by Donald Hamilton. I love these old Matt Helm stories. This is the 1st book in the series. I have already read The Silencers (Matt Helm, #4) by Donald Hamilton (which I think is the 3rd or 4th book). I bought this book, but my digital library has the 1st 9 Matt Helm books. I am set for awhile.

message 4216: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Matt Helm series is an old favorite of mine. Keep buying them, David. This time around they should also publish the final one. Hamilton wrote it, but it had been so long since his last, they didn't want to publish it. Now they're all being republished, so it should come out.

You might also want to check out Matt Helm: The War Years by Keith Wease. It's pretty good. My review covers some of the details, no spoilers, here:

That whole series is good and yeah the blacksmith yuck. I just finished the latest book last week. The narrator is one of the beat out there. Mccammon has never disappointed me yet. Im still reading boys Life and just finished his rather strange debut novel Baal

message 4229: by Percival (new)

Percival Constantine (percivalconstantine) I just finished reading Pentecost by J.F. Penn and really enjoyed it. Normally, I'm not one for the Dan Brown-style books, but her writing is so much better than his. Some clunky dialogue in parts, but overall well worth the read. It was free on Kindle when I bought it and still might be.

Right now I'm reading another book I got for free, The Black Opera by Raymond Embrack. It's been an interesting read, although the vast number of characters have made it a bit difficult to get into. Plus I've also had graduate school reading horn in on my fun reading time.

message 4235: by Rizwan (new)

Rizwan Khalil Just finished Dead Beat, the 7th book in the Dresden Files series, and I loved it! It was simply superb and nonstop thrill ride from the very first page to last... It's currently my second most favorite Dresden, the Best is still the badass 5th one: Death Masks. I didn't much like the 6th Blood Rites, which aside for some great revelations didn't have much action or that epic-vibe to begin with, and the always shifting storyline (adult movie mystery/White Court/Mavra) was not very enjoyable (it was good obviously, just not great). How's the next one: Proven Guilty? Should I take a break from Dresden for some change with Rollins' The Kill Switch and Baldacci's The Target, or is it as awesome as Dead Beat? Thanks :)

Stephen King does seem to be author people either enjoy or they don't. You may just be over on the don't side.

I think that is very true and I'm one of the ones on the "don't" side. I can only think of 2 or 3 King books I've read from beginning to end and liked fairly well. Even then, didn't like them enough to re-read.

Seeley James (seeleyjames) | 367 comments Humble Brag warning (yer gonna wanna slap me):

I received my advance copy of Lee Child's PERSONAL and ripped through the first ten chapters before falling asleep with the Kindle in my hands.

Contract says I can't discuss it until 02-Sept, but I can tell you, it's classic Lee Child. The story has yet to unfold for me but the writing is probably his best to date. Great phrases, visceral details, etc.

Peace, Seeley

message 4244: by J. (new)

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Recently finished Never Go Back by Lee Child. Good action, adventure that didn't disappoint me. Having only read a couple of Jack Reacher books I can't really say where it fits in the best-to-worst ranking for Reacher, maybe some of you could tell me where you think it fits. Bought it in Zurich where the selection of books in English was thin. Turned out to be a good buy.

Zurich's a good place to be looking for a book. If we put Lee Child on his own scale, with ONE SHOT being his A game and Nothing to Lose being his D game (no failures for Mr. Child :), I'd put Never Go Back in the C+ position. It's good, but the background and other story elements were fan-oriented. It was better read in release-order with the 2-3 previous books.

If you're looking for his best works (IMHO), try these:
Tripwire
Echo Burning
Without Fail
The Hardway
Bad Luck and Trouble
Gone Tomorrow

Peace, Seeley

message 4246: by Lance (new)

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 226 comments Just finished Bring It, Omnibus Edition , by Seeley James. It's a fast, twisty globetrotting adventure with its most cynical and paranoid parts ripped from recent headlines. It features an unusual female lead and an engaging male hero-knight in somewhat-tarnished armor, lots of action and enough shifty goings-on to keep dedicated puzzle-hounds busy. Four stars.

Well, it's hard to beat the intricacies of Mr. Child and the linear, non-formula methodology. But there are a couple who stand out. Our own Lance Charnes whose two novels are character driven and finely plotted works: Doha 12 and South. Then there is the new traditionally published young author Roger Hobbs, whose anti-hero opens a whole new genre: Ghostman
