I really liked it. It's a two book series and their both huge. The first book is lots of detail and mystery and hard sci-fi stuff. Then about 2/3rds of the way through the action starts and doesn't let up until the end of the second. There are more things going on than on a carnival broadway, lots of character and story groups. Likable characters

Lots of time spent universe building. I loved it, some people find the detail and complexity excruciating. (to me... all good stuff.)

I like how there are so many different wards. And finishing with that I moved on to The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson

Tim The Enchanter Too much romance for my tastes but it does set up some interesting possibilities for future novels. I hope Scott Lynch is feeling better and can get the third one out in less than 6 years.

David Dalton | 152 comments I am reading a very good thriller: Chimera A Jim Chapel Mission by David Wellington .

7 Super-soldiers on the run....with each having a mission to kill. Who can you trust?

******

Also reading "Red Haze: A Werewolf Story for the 21st Century", by Ian Redman. Not the best written story every, but it has captured my interest. A werewolf who targets terrorists. The 1st of 3 Red Haze stories.

Looks interesting David. Kind of liked a couple of other books by him, think I'll pick this one up at Audible and try it today as I do "other stuff"...including sitting here and letting my joints rest up. LOL.

Thanks.

Doing my best. I take a lot of "Goodie's Powders". The doctor would give me pain pills but I don't want them. Need to have my knees replaced. Costs too much for now (the part I have to pay out of pocket.

Still I mostly get around.

A very good friend of mine finally managed to get her second knee replaced two years ago (first one done almost 20 years ago) and she is finally getting around pain-free for the first time in many years. I can sympathize with you as I know how she struggled with it.

message 3718: by Dave (new)

Dave Edlund (dedlund) About half way through Event (Event Group Adventure, #1) by David Lynn Golemon . The plot is cleaver and has captured my attention to the point where I spent hours this last weekend turning page after page. However, I am surprised (and disappointed)at the poor quality of copy editing. The book was published by Saint Martin's Press, a division of Macmillan, and yet it is of quality I'd expect from a self-published novel where all the editing was done by the author.

My Hero has had both knees replaced. It was woth whatever it costs. (We are drowning in doc bills.) He gets around well now. Has other issues, but gets around well. For more than 10 years.

Yeah, I thought that, too. And he loses track of things like water only runs downhill. I have pretty well given up on him. But I have also given up on vocabulary. Nobody seems to know what words mean, including copy editors. E.g., check the difference between revelry and reverie.

I read through the book so fast that I did notice any glaring issues. I don't think it can be as bad a self-published and self edited books. I have read a few and the editing can be quite atrocious.

And yes, Chimera A Jim Chapel Mission by David Wellington was very good. I have said it before, but this time I REALLY mean it, but this would make a very EXCITING movie.

Wowk, I'm behind. I read Pagan by Andrew Chapman. Good action, interesting characters and monsters, dystopian setting but it was fun read, even if it didn't make my best ever shelf. It's not a replacement for MHI (then what is?) but it's enjoyable enough. A bit oversexed and I didn't like the werewolves socital issues, but there was enough blowing up, smashing trashing and filletting of people monsters and things going on to be fun, and Chapman has a good sense of humor so it's recommendable (for adults).

Now I'm reading PRECIPICE by Leland Davis and finding it good, well written, solid story that should be in the DOHA 12 zone. I found it predictable up to a point, then, very unpredictable (not sure if that is good writing or a bad start) the characters were likeable and the action was fun and tight. Recommendable book. Maybe 4.0 or 4.5 stars to DOHA 12's 5. Worth the time to read it. Not a replacment for Ludlum yet.

Good modern espionage story.

I read it and liked it too. I'm not "Top shelving" it but it was a fun read. I hardly know what words mean anyway so, the vocabulary didn't bug me and I do a lot of text to speech while I drive so editing errors have to mess that up before I catch them.

I did notice that there was a point where it looked like somebody else took over and started writing. Humor started flaring up and as things became more and more wild, the characters became more and more loose... it was fun (it might have been better if the whole book was written that way) and, it seemed here and there to get away from him (the plot).

That said, I enjoyed the read.

I read "Valiant" in the "Lost Fleet Series" ...it was a re-read to get ready to read the next one.

"Black Jack Geary... He could rule the human universe....star systems quake at his arrival... and...of course, even he can't understand women without help, a seeing eye dog and a road map..."

(for the record, I really liked this one... for a better actual quote...the third rule...

"If you cannot give mercy, then you should not expect to receive it."

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Finished Mister Slaughter which I very much enjoyed. Finally finished The Blood Gospel which was OK enough that I'll continue to book 2 eventually although it was kind of disappointing to me. The story never suckrd me in more than just enough to keep going. The religious stuff didn't bother me or offend me I just didn't find the plot terribly intriguing I gave it 3 stars

message 3745: by Mark (last edited Nov 30, 2013 04:49PM) (new)

Mark Carver (markcarverbooks) I'm about a third of the way through The Blood Gospel by James Rollins. I'm an author too and I noticed on Amazon that readers who checked out my books are fans of his so I thought I'd check this guy out. I looked at Subterranean but I'd only recently read Greig Beck's Beneath the Dark Ice and I wasn't in the mood for another Antarctic monster story, so I fast-forwarded to his latest. It's interesting, putting an intriguing twist on a familiar theme. I see that Travis from NYY wasn't too impressed. Anyone else read/reading it?

message 3746: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Personally as far as Rollins stand alone novels go at least of the ones I've read so far Amazonia has been my favorite. Subterranean is probably my least favorite of all his books.
