Sharon Michael | 449 comments Bought "Amid the Shadows" by Michael Grumley immediately after finishing his first novel Breakthrough and was disappointed.

However, it's me ... not the author. I've simply burned out on religion-based plots, which this was. Unfortunately there was no real indication of this in the synopsis. Writing is good and storyline read smoothly but the religion was simply too intrusive for me.

I'm reading Hannibal, it happens to be one of the books Cussler used as a reference for one of his books. As a history text, it's not so bad, however, written just before the turn of the century, the style favors minutia, but, Dodge is thorough.

I've finished Hannibal by Theodore Ayrault Dodge. It's a facinating book. Dodge spent much of it riping up Livy and the other historians of the time (all Roman) and pointing out how thier reports and accounts do injustice to Hannibal's record. Dodge, is a retired military man, and I can't shake the suspicion that his history of the 2nd Punic War runs parallel to the Civil War with Hannibal playing the role of Robert E. Lee. Still, if you can make it through the minutia, which is par for the course in the day it was written...think 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea... it's also a well told account.

Now I'm reading Cochrane: The Real Master and Commander by David Cordingly. And, next to Lord Sidney Smith, this dude is the coolest guy to come out of the Napoleonic Wars. If your writing a book, and it's military fiction, you just have to find room to let this guy inspire one of your Naval Characters. Lots of fun... well, since he never worked for me I can say that.

Larry Seeley (lfseeley) | 82 comments I'm reading Creole Bell by James Lee Burke. He's a great and prolific author, but he's taken to writing the same story over and over again. The background descriptions could have been lifted from any of his previous novels. I would say that if you've read one, you've read them all, except his words can fall on your mind like a good song repeating in your head.Creole Belle

Still reading Cochrane: The Real Master and Commander. This is a really interesting person. If you think like me (and I realize there may not be a show of hands to endorse that idea...don't rush the soap box please!) This guy is a great Character for an Action Adventure book, a modern Fantasy book that reveals who's the secret wizard for protection of the world agianst evil, or even a historical Romance novel with action scenes and live cannon shot. This is the guy who inspired some of Forresters Horatio Hornblower and, as the title tells, Master and Commander (made more famous by the movie staring Russel Crowe of the same name).

He's just cool! Human and...a wonderful warm romance with his beloved Kate... there's action, adventure, treasure, a sexy young bride (Kate) and even infidelity, conspiracy and lots of things that go boom.

It's a history book, not a story, but the guy's just cool. He could go villan too if you needed him too... Enjoying it.

It's not Action Adventur fiction but... the Dude's just COOL! Cochrane The Real Master and Commander by David Cordingly

Sharon Michael | 449 comments Just finished Indisputable Proof by Gary Williams and am still shaking my head a bit. Very difficult to rate for me ... 5-star for the action/adventure writing, hard to put down, dropped one star because the plot is fairly standard (Biblical archaelogy) and in my personal opinion has definitely been overused and dropped still another star for the Epilogue.

I thought the ending was the weakest part of the book, seemed hurried and a bit confused and the Epilogue (again in my personal opinion) not necessary, was only added to present the author's personal religious beliefs and added nothing to the story.

Overall ... entertaining but I wish I hadn't read the Epilogue, I prefer ambiguity in this type of plot.

Since Halloween is coming, I've been reading horror. Finished The Fog good and I enjoyed it. Just a little gross in parts. I'm just about finished with What Hides Within if spiders scare you maybe this won't be for you. Otherwise, another good book for Halloween.

I'm also in the middle of this month's group read Ice Station

I thought Blowback by Valerie Plame and Sarah Lovett was great. Here's my review:

If you are looking for trouble, Valerie Plame and Sarah Lovett deliver a straight shot of it. Call it payback. Call it retribution if you want. Only this one is not about getting even. Blowback is all that and so much more. This is the real deal from someone who is the real deal. Ten years ago Plame wasn't simply sitting around polishing her nails or working on her smile. She was out there in the cold with everything on the line.

Valerie Plame is the survivor they couldn't count out. Now she’s back, standing tall and laying it all out for the world to see. Today’s stakes aren't about the rich, petty politics or settling scores. The future rests on a ticking nuclear time bomb that’s ready to explode in your face.

Jim, I'm so glad you enjoyed my book! And you're such a champion--recommending it & nominating it for group reads and everything. Very flattered. (You too, Magicats!!) I'm sending you guys both virtual hugs.

I was really excited to see that Valerie Plame has a spy thriller out! I read her nonfiction expose Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House when it first came out years ago and was so fascinated by her story. Sounds like you enjoyed Blowback so I'm going to move it up on my TBR list.

I'm blew through The War of Pawns which turned out better than expected but is marketed on the one novela at a time strategy so it's short. The first chapter for the next book was a good teaser. I was hoping for something like Earthman Jack vs. The Ghost Planet but it did not stand up to that comaprison.

It wasn't strong on the science or the heavy moralistic themes that much of science fiction is rife with.

It was an enjoyable read in the 3-4 star range.

I picked up a mystery that is kind of cute and cuddly (also not sophisticated) and enjoyable The Grey Tier: A Dead Celeb Mystery. I'm not deep into it, but its funny, interesting and, if a little on the chick-lit-side, is entertaining for me.

message 3581: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments finished Hard Magic. I enjoyed it although I like MHI better. As far as comparing MHI and Hard Magic you can't. They are completely different. MHI has more comedy in it which is where I decide I like it better. Hard Magic is more comparable to Mistborn only lacking in the world building as it is more alternate history so we are in the fictitious 20's and 30's in the US. I'll continue on with the series, it's still a fun type book and hey they even throw in an occasional zombie.

message 3582: by Tim The Enchanter (new)

Tim The Enchanter I just finshed reading The Sleep Police - The Sleep Police by Jay Bonansinga . While not exactly AA, it is an exciting Thriller with a sleep deprived detective who decides he will not go back to sleep until he solves the case. The kicker is he believes he is somehow involved with serial killings, all of which occurred while he was sleeping. The kindle version is less than 4 bucks. Definitely worth a read. A short review.

I think the last Bond I read was sometime in the late eighties, it seemed ok at the time but I can't speak to how it would stand up now. This one has been fairly slow going, I'm about 25% in and he is just now getting to his latest assignment. There is a little bit of mystery surrounding a woman he ran into while taking a few days off to celebrate his birthday but no real action yet. It's set in 1969 and he is being sent into a small African country that is in the middle of a civil war.

I finished The Final Cut the other day and I recommend it. It's good action/suspense with a very fascinating antiheroic female jewel thief, a hero who is a bit like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes (a less cerebral) one. Lots of action and a fair amount of globetrotting. I think some of the members of this group will enjoy this.

Ctgt Just finished the Bond book Solo: A James Bond Novel and gave it three stars. More of an adventure book than straight up action. In typical spy book fashion you spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out which side everyone is on, although that does give the book a good amount of intrigue. The second half of the book Bond is on his own without agency support(by his own choosing), hence the title. I did enjoy the writing style and the while the pacing wasn't breakneck it was steady. I will probably check out some of Boyd's non-Bond books.
