Yes, the original Dirk Pitt, which was very difficult to find. I also, had no idea that the first in the series was published in 1983.

It's pretty good so far and I'm not that far into it.

It doesn't help that when Cussler first published them, many of the early ones (the ones that I've read) were "near Future" stories and then, the future passed them by. So he had some Soviet involvement after the soveiet union collapsed.

Which, may only be interesting to me...

The paperback is readily available at amazon I was just disappointed there isn't kindle version for many of cussler including this. It also seems difficult to find very many on audio

All those communist stories are a bit dated now, aren't they? I had a history professor who used to rant about the American intelligence community because they convinced everyone the Soviets were building this and that, but when the wall fell, it turned out none of the stuff worked. The new "Soviets" are "Terrorists", and those books abound.

Tim The Enchanter I'm humming through the Dresden Files. About to start Summer Knight the fourth in the series. If you haven't read them, the 3rd one really feels like a fantasy AA novel. Pretty exciting stuff.

If you're into Seinfield, go to YouTube and check out the installments of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." The Chris Rock one is good. The Mel Brooks one is good. The Sarah Silverman is funny, too. In fact, they're all pretty good.

Anthony Bellaleigh (anthonybellaleigh) | 76 comments I've just discovered Lee Child's Jack Reacher and am reading book one (Killing Floor)... Enjoying it so far. Though he does have a penchant for short sentences. Like this. And this. And yes, if a sentence drags on for a while, he will just stop. And start again... :) Good on you, Lee: punctuation is an art on its own and - more often than not - irrelevant to a good tale!

Over the years I've collected all the Reacher books. Finally this year I started reading them, and so far I read the first two both of which I enjoyed very much, most of all the character of Reacher. Here's my review of Killing Floor & Die Trying if you're interested:

Rizwan Khalil Finally finished reading The Hit, and it took me a longer time than The Innocent did. I think it's because I didn't find this one to be as intriguing and unputdownable as the previous one. It's a solid 4-starred action thriller, but just a bit too conventional and not as unique. Anyway, I'm already impatiently waiting for the next Will Robie thriller!

Here's my review of The Hit if anyone interested:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I think now I'll start re-reading this month's group read Pacific Vortex!. It is one of my favorite action adventure novel, but as I read it more than 10-12 years ago, this will be the perfect time for a revise!

The structure to his sentences and paragraphs and punctuation marks are a back beat you expect when you pick up his next book. Like an old song from your teens. It just feels right when you hear it.

The details would bore you if they were drawn out. But they come to life in short, staccato cadences. They have meaning. And speak laconic volumes. Less is more.

Lee Child. Mies van der Rohe. Jackson Pollack. No one can copy the masters.

Peace, Seeley

message 3276: by Rizwan (new)

Rizwan Khalil David wrote: "Rizawn: I started off with The Hit and loved it. If The Innocent is even better than I am REALLY looking forward to reading it."

Well, David, maybe its just a case of "which one you read first". And if you read the second one before the first one, I can assure you that atleast some of the MAJOR plot points and twists you've already been spoiled. I can safely say it won't have quite the same impact on you with getting-to-know-the-characters & revelations (when they arrive), as it did on me, full-on! So if you just forget any expectations and try to enjoy a good book, you'll have a great time reading it I can guarantee that!

Loved your poetic description of Lee Child's writing, Seeley!

I personally get bored with overlong and obsessive sentences and narratives, so I can appreciate terse narrative when done well.

David Dalton | 152 comments I am up to 33% into The Defector by Mark Chisnell . This Janac looks to be promising as a villian. I have been searching for years for another villian to rivial Hans Gruber (from the film version of Die-Hard). Hopefully Janac will give Hans a run for his money.
****
Then to keep me busy I am also re-reading Callsign King (Jack Sigler - Chess Team, #1) by Jeremy Robinson . I am about 35% into this novella. I have read this story before, but now I picked it up as part of a 3-novella collection called The Brainstorm Trilogy (not listed on GoodReads yet). Each novella was going for $2.99 apiece, which I felt was way too high for the short length of each story. But now this 3-novella collection is selling for $0.99. So I picked it up and figured I would re-read the 1st novella to refresh my memory on how this storyline goes.

James Bruno (jamesbruno) | 20 comments I'm reading Andrew Kaplan's Scorpion Deception. He's a solid writer and piles on the suspense. I wish, however, he'd veer away from pat plot formulas and do better research. While he gets the technical side mostly right (e.g., spy tradecraft and weapons), he stumbles on the easy stuff -- CIA employees haven't referred to their agency as "The Company" for at least 40 years. But all in all, Kaplan entertains with smart plotting and interesting characters.

Rizwan Khalil Started reading, and already 1/3rd through Storm Front. At first finished reading the short story Restoration of Faith that introduced Harry Dresden, and Butcher claimed writing it while still in university and the "third or fourth short story he ever written at that point including school projects!", but I thought it was a fun, very quick and a nice first meeting with Harry Dresden. Looking forward to reading the other books.

Melissa, if you never read the classics, how can you appreciate newer stories that are built upon the foundations of the older stories?

Have you ever read any of the books in this collection: Day of the Jackal/Odessa File/Dogs of War (Novels of Frederick Forsyth) by Frederick Forsyth by Frederick Forsyth?

Featuring 3 classic tales of life in the 60's and early 70's. Dealing with war, spies, and a big time attempted assassination.

Ctgt I've been on a bit of a crime kick lately(just reading). Just finished Hard Bite which is a novella based on a short story from The 1st Short Story Collection. I had read the collection some time ago but didn't realize one of the stories had been expanded. This is the story of a man who is the victim of a hit and run. As a result of the accident he is now confined to a wheelchair and comes up with a unique way to enforce his vigilante justice. If you like a little edge in your crime stories, I think you will like both these books.

Tim The Enchanter Just finished The Art of Fielding. I had been looking forward to reading it but was sorely disappointed. I am now on Death Masks, the 5th in the Dresden Files. I think I may have to read a different book before I tackle the sixth. It seems that I have a hard time reading beyond the fifth book in a series.

I have also started listening to Midnight Riot. The narrator is VERY british and takes some getting used to for this Canadian but is shaping up to be another interesting UF.

Reading Earthman Jack vs. The Ghost Planet by Matthew Kadish.

Okay, it's young adult maybe possibly aimed at teenagers, but, it also seems to be very enjoyable for aging geeks who understand what it's like to be 5'4" and 120 lbs soaking wet with a rock their pocket and so entroverted they get voted "Most like to...who is that again?" by thier classmates.

All of us right?

I'm 14% in, and, this is a fun book so far. Sure it's kind of like this, and sort of like that but this one is written and available and fun and I'm reading it now. Damn the cliche's full speed ahead.

Can't knock fun!

message 3298: by Tim The Enchanter (new)

message 3300: by Tim The Enchanter (new)

Tim The Enchanter I don't know if I have ever read past the fifth book in a series. It's as if I get series block and I need to move on. In this case, I think I will make it past of the Dresden files. Each book is fresh and new.
