I'll be very interested in hearing your thoughts about the whole series, after you finish reading it. I recently bought all 10 Belgariad & Malloreon books but still a bit hesitant as the plot sounds too much like Lords of the Rings to me.

I love that series, as well as the Mallorean. I've read them all at least twice. It maybe lacks a little of the sophistication, or at least the bloodthirsty-ness of more contemporary epic fantasy, but it's just so much fun and utterly absorbing. You're right, the characters are wonderful and really stick with you long after.

Have you read The Elenium and the Tamuli? Different sets of characters, but I love them and the story almost as much.

I love the series. It's lighter than LOTR and definitely not so bloodthirsty. But the characters are wonderful. Give them a try. Book one starts a bit slow but again, the characters are so well drawn I don't really notice the slow start. The characters draw me in immediately.

I was thinking more about this and I have to say the series isn't really that much like LOTR. There is enough difference that you should enjoy the series. The Belgariad comes first. Personally I remember enjoying the Belgariad more than the Mallorean. Not that the Mallorean series was bad, I just preferred the Belgariad.

One thing I've noticed about Eddings is people either love him or loathe him. There is no middle ground. Those that enjoy the Belgariad rave about the books. I was talking on Twitter today with a woman who said she's read the Belgariad series 20 times and she swears it's not an overstatement. For me, re-reading the series is like coming back to old friends. Eddings has created a rich tapestry and a pretty well defined world. I hope you give the series a fair go. Judging by reactions you will love it or hate it. lol!

Thank you very much for your honest and detailed opinion about the Belgariad-Malloreon series David! You put me at ease & far more invested in those books, as I bought the whole series on a whim and without knowing anything about it.

Very much glad that the characters are so well-drawn and interesting, as I MUCH more prefer a character-driven story than a strictly plot-driven story. Thanks again!

I had friends who sailed Erie a lot and had some pretty hairy adventures, mostly when I was not aboard. Since I too live near Lake Erie that caught my eye and prompted the comment. I hope your sailing days are all enjoyable.

I liked it, too. Will Henry was also my favorite. Just thinking, "what if" Will Henry's part off the story continued, I think we might have had more about
Foxy. Foxy's storyline IMO could have been more up front. I'm not sure if I'll continue the series, maybe in the future.

By first ten do you mean the Belgariad and Mallorean series? Were they his first books or just the first 10 you read? I'm wondering if hid other series were just imitations of what he'd written.

Sorry, I've been absent for a while. Who'd have thought that in times of "Furlough" i'd find my self as busy as I have been lately. Last week, my son's soccer camp, this week, Early Intervention Substance Abuse Class.

I have been listening though. I've completed the auidobooks for On Basilisk Station by David Weber. A fun tail in the same group as "The Lost Fleet" and "Galaxy Unknown." Honor Harrington, Captain, slightly Mary Sue-ish, but I found the read to be good and enjoyed it. It's more a "Military-Space Opera" than what I call "Hard Sci-fi" and had a distinctively Nautical-Historical theme to it that reminded me of the history books I've been reading about the Napoleonic era Naval escapades of the US and England. It's a good read.

I have completed Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson and enjoyed it. It's a good Epic Fantasy that has a different or odd magic system that reminds me of Earth Sea and the Spell Singer series, more because of the feel of it than any details. Nobody would mistake this for either of those. I liked the moral delimas as they worked out and the character growth in the major characters. I'm not going to jump up and down and scream "best I ever Read" but it I do recommend it and really enjoyed it.

I've read (audiobooked) the first story of METAtropolis: Cascadia by Jay Lake with a foreward by John Scalzi. I've got more stories to read but I set this down to pick up my next book. I liked the first short story (Cascadia) and found it reminded me of Allen Steele's Coyote series (one of the middle books more than either end). Good and, in the nature of dystopian short stories, kind of thought provoking...(which I generally like)...(or is it called "poking someone in the eye with a stick" if it's this blatant?)

Now I'm reading The Eye of God: A Sigma Force Novel by James Rollins. So far it's good, but I'm just in the begining and haven't really tread into the meat of the story. Rachel's back so... that's good. (Love a woman in uniform...especially Carabienieri... Italians have a lot of flare when it comes to uniforms.)

I waited to start EOG because I wanted a narrated audobook and I had to wait for my monthly "Credit" at Audible.com.

Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. To be honest, it's not the Best in Sigma force (Bloodline takes that crown imho), and even Last Oracle or Judas Strain had certain better parts, but still as always James Rollins is at his A-game here... Love to hear your thoughts afterwords, Hugh.

The first ten he published. But the Mallorean was the same story with different adventures as the Belgarian. It is the characters that make it.

Polgara was once my favorite character of all time. But not the book by that name.

It would be hard to pick a favourite. I think Silk is up there. Belgarath and Polgara are wonderful characters. That's the strength of his writing that even the support characters were so memorable!

I just finished a terrific book Melt by Shane M. Brown. Some of you have read his previous books Plaza and Fast. Those two are action thrillers and this one is more of a psychological thriller, but just as good. It was just recently published so check it out, I really enjoyed it.

On the bright side!! The Innocent came up in my library queue and I'm really into that one. It opens with a bang and it flies along. I think the writing is superb. It's lean and it moves with a certain intensity about it.
