Sharon Michael | 449 comments It's odd in some ways because I do like urban fantasy, but I am apparently unable to manage zombies in any way, shape or form. I've tried several and can't think of a single one I've finished. I'm also not a big fan, in general, of the traditional vampires or werewolves either so you'd think I'd tend to avoid urban fantasy, but depending on how they're written, I can (obviously) manage those better than vampires.

I also have to admit that I have two 'vampire' books on my favorite/re-read shelves but in both cases the vampires are very non-traditional. And I love the Jane Yellowrock series, but the vampires and weres are manageable for me. I just hope she doesn't decide to add zombies!

Well, I like this. I'm not a zombie fan, but I'm not turned away by theme. Joe Ledger is a good character. The set up and plot read sort of like a complex comic book or sci-fi movie but are organized and well detailed not just thrown out there. I also like the characters.

Zombies? Insert Flesh Devouring Creature Here... That's not a big deal to me...it's darker than MHI, though that has a lot to do with the way the characters are reacting and, some of the victims (though MHI suggests danger to all, usually only adults who are asking for it get munched on. This... it's a little bit more random.) Scary villains (human).

It's chock full of zombies, but, without the zombies you don't get doc Rudy's wonderful insight into the human race. (he had a good siloquy.)

Joe Ledger is cool and "Bad" (a little superhero bad, but, not so much to bug me. He borders on Alex Hunter "Bad," without the physical strength...and that's "bad" in a good way. )

Have you read the Ilona Andrews Edge series? My wife loves it and keeps trying to get me to read the series. I must confess I don't read much urban fantasy.

No, I haven't. Will make a note and see if it's available at the library.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I read the first one of Andrews' Edge series & gave it 4 stars. It surprised me. My review (short) is here:

Nice review, Jim. I know there others in the series(I've bought them all for my wife) did you ever go back to read more?

message 2157: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I haven't read any more. I'm kind of overwhelmed with books to read & haven't been reading as many PNR/UF books the past year or so. I have several in the TBR pile that I keep looking at & thinking I should get to, but haven't felt like it. I seem to be on more of an action/mystery/thriller kick.

That said, right now I'm listening to Autobiography of Mark Twain: The Complete and Authoritative Edition, Volume 1 & reading On Guns and Hunting, both nonfiction. The latter is by Donald Hamilton, the author of the Matt Helm series. He wrote several nonfiction books, but this one is a compilation of articles, most of which were published in outdoor magazines. The stories are quite entertaining so far.

Jim Crocker | 271 comments I'm reading Silent Joe and Tangled Webs: How False Statements are Undermining America: From Martha Stewart to Bernie Madoff. These two are fascinating!

Just finished with Heaven's On Hold and Operator. Both of these were were exciting reads that kept me guessing.

A moment of near cardiac arrest when I thought you meant my book with the same name... :-)

message 2160: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I like your cover better, Mark. It's pretty awesome. Do you only publish through Amazon? I don't have a Kindle.

message 2161: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Mark Twain autobiography had to go. After 2 hours of listening & some skipping around, I never did find what Twain wrote, just the boring man talking about how it was written, repetitively. Blech! Not what I wanted.

I'm listening to I am Legend and Other Stories. Matheson isn't disappointing me, thankfully.

Thanks Jim, the 'Janac's Games' books all have that same cover 'theme'.

The Wrecking Crew is also on Apple, B&N, Kobo, etc. let me know what you need and I'll post a link. It's free right now too... :-)

Scott | 126 comments I finished Night Shift. I really enjoyed some of the stories. "One for the Road" really made me want to reread 'Salem's Lot.

I think that I'm going to read The Dragon Factory next.

message 2167: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Jim. Good article. I'm a bit surprised there are only 314 PNR groups, though. Very interesting how our shelves & groups are used to steer publishers to us with discounts & give them data. Makes sense. We're either consumers or product & since this site is free to us, we're obviously the latter. That's fine with me. I like being able to get a vote in to the publishers.

message 2187: by Rizwan (new)

Rizwan Khalil Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm currently reading The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan and having soo much fun! As for Action/Adventure last I read last month was Bloodline: A Sigma Force Novel by James Rollins and still mesmerized by it. Since then I'm on a Percy Jackson roll.

Welcome Rizwan! Glad to have you here. I liked Bloodline too! I've managed the entire Sigma Force Series. He has another one coming out in the Sigma force group, and Rollins has been warning on Facebook and Goodreads that someone major gets killed. Hmm... now it's time to speculate.

Hope it's not Kat, Seichan, or Rachel... or Joe Kowolski... I like Joe.

Those old Vaudeville and Burlesque routines showed up on radio and TV for years and a whole new generation saw them. That bit was on the Abbot and Costello shows, the Danny Thomas show, I Love Lucy and I'm sure a lot of others.

Thanks, Mike! That was fun to watch. Classic slapstick comedy and the facial expressions on Costello's is pure enjoyment.

I think that's where my love of audio books came from, listening to the radio when I was young.

message 2199: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments I'm reading The Essential Calvin and Hobbes I needed something that takes no brain power I have the complete Abbot and Costello collection but have only made it through about the first 4 movies. Even if you get through the movies there are hours of extras on the dvds. Over the next 20 years I'll get through it all.

I always like their "comedy bits" better than their movies (at least since I got older than 12. I loved the movies as a kid). Their radio show was good to as were a lot of the old radio shows.
