message 1867: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm reading Where the Summer Ends: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 1. Wow! Although I've read all these stories before, it's been a while & they're still blowing me away. The book was expensive, but worth it. The best news is I have Walk on the Wild Side: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 2 to read next.

If I had all his Kane stories in one volume, I'd be in hog heaven, but I'll have to make do reading them in various books. I think I have them all. I'll look for a good list of them in chronological order & read them that way for a change. Anyone know of one?

Just looked too and yes they are!!

message 1870: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) If you take a look at the cost of some of the used books with KEW's horror stories in them, you'll find out that 'Summer' & 'Wild Side' aren't badly priced. I've seen a used library copy of In a Lonely Place for $30, although today I see Amazon has one for $12. A new paperback is $275. To get KEW's complete stories piecemeal - if you can - I'll bet you'd spend a lot more than the $90 these 2 books cost. Also, some have been edited in some collections, I've heard.

Centipede Press isn't cheap, but have nice books, collections that are pretty rare. I usually treat myself to a couple of their books a year. Last year, I got 3; the two I've mentioned & the Paul Cain collection - the first of its kind, I believe.

Check out Centipede's scratch & dent sales, too. Jerad discounts them heavily for stuff I consider minor. I don't think there's a link to it on the web site, but it's here:

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone.

Hugh, I think it's going around big time.

Mike, I never think of taking the antivirals. My mom has me doing the home remedies (vapor rub, lemon and honey, cough drops, nebulizer), and I'm trying to rest, drink lots of fluids, and taking medicine. If I'm not better tomorrow, I'll probably go to the doctor.

As far as reading, I started Beneath the Dark Ice. Interesting so far.

I think it's the just about the best genre book ever written, the other two aren't quite to the same standard, but it's a really high bar!

Mark Chisnell (markchisnell) | 255 comments I just finished:
The Penal Colony by Richard Herley

I also finished Only the Innocent over the holidays:
Only the Innocent by Rachel Abbott
And here's the review:

And I'm now about a third of the way into:
Killing Plato (Jack Shepherd #2) by Jake Needham

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Ctgt wrote: "...Ok, ok you talked me into it. I have a couple of the Kane books already, so I just picked up Summer and Lonely Place used. "

Cancel one of the two as there are too many duplicate stories. Where the Summer Ends: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 1 &
In a Lonely Place have the same stories except the latter is lacking two; "Neither Brute Nor Human" & "Blue Lady, Come Back".

I don't know of another collection that comes close to gathering up what
Walk on the Wild Side: The Best Horror Stories of Karl Edward Wagner, Volume 2 has, so I'd highly suggest finding it.

My reviews list all the stories in them:
Summer: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Lonely Place: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

THeir all good 1 through 4. I really enjoyed Monster Hunter International. Great franchise.

Lee, I'm interested in how you like that one. I've been wanting to read The Cabinet of Curiosities for a while now.

message 1885: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt I'll also be interested in what you think, Lee. I read this several months ago. I'll wait till you finish to comment any further.

Just started Raven Black, about 50 pages in and am really loving it! Thanks for the recommendation Bev!

You know how you sometimes have trouble finding an interesting book? Well, I have the opposite problem right now. I have 2 audio books going, Cold City and Invincible both of which are great and holding my attention and then I'm about halfway through Cursed and I'm into it also. I'm having trouble finding time to read the Jacka book. 3 books and I'm caught up in all of them.

The audios are both part of series Eileen. I've been burning through the Jack Campbell books. They've been on my "to be read" list for a while and I'm trying to get back to some of the books that have been waiting. Cold City is a prequel of the Repairman Jack books, actually the first in a trilogy of prequels.
