Philip K Dick discussion
Ridley Scott primed for Blade Runner redux

Ridley Scott - "This is arguably the greatest science fiction movie ever made and we're not remaking it," he said. "It's a prequel or a sequel."
from http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-t...
I also like the movie, but was disappointed more of the book didn't make it in, especially the mood organ and Mercerism. But I'm also guessing Ridley is consdering this a redux of the movie and not a remake of the book, so this one could be even further from the book.
I also just recently read that rumor has it Ridley Scott never even finished reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Can't remember where I saw that, but I think it may have been another sci-fi author that mentioned it. Anyone know more about that rumor?

Just leave it alone, please.
Please.

If it's just some glowing-Hollywood-shineboy remake, forget it.
:)
I have to agree with Stormhawk. Aren't there some Dick stories that haven't been given the Hollywood treatment?
I would be interested in seeing a movie that really gives the feel of a Dick story, not just shows some similar content. (I've not seen Scanner, so I may be writing out of turn.)

The ONLY PKD film I'm looking forward to is/are (in order) Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said and Ubik.
I just think Blade Runner redux (really hope they call it ELECTRIC SHEOP, as in 'a planet of android sheople') was the perfect opportunity to address the 'highly interpretive' comment of King Dinosaur, and 'reshoot the novel'.

:(
Wonder if NEW BLADE(tm) will be snappy and street and hip? Eugh...
And here's me just wanting a PROPER screen adaptation of D.A.D.O.E.S., with all that infers...
It will be just some glowing-Hollywood-shineboy remake so i dont care really.
Im interested in other PKD films there are rumors about.

Oh, yeah.... :)"
Yep im more interested in seeing those films that might become similar to what PKD tried to do with the book versions.
I have vague hope for a film that captures the mood, gravity of PKD books.

I think every movie of a book is going to leave out key portions of a book, otherwise the movie would have to be 10 or 12 hours long. So I agree with Pickle, A Scanner Darkly worked as a movie for me. The format reminds me so much of a graphic novel coming to life, that I am able to watch the movie and enjoy it without ever really thinking about the book, and what is different or missing.
I also agree with Mike, in that it would be nice for a new Bladerunner to include portions of ElectricSheep that were left out the first time - but I have a strong feeling Ridley Scott won't do this. I think he'll take it even more in a direction he wants and less in a direction that is true to PKD.
Also, one thing I also find interesting about this project, is that with a large percentage of the remakes in recent years, espeically in the horror genre, the director of those is a first or second time full length director. My wife is a huge horror fan that gets irate at all these remakes that are 'butchering' the original great movies, but I've noticed very often these are given to young directors making their first full length feature - so I support them in that aspect, viewing them as an exercise to help build a new generation of talented directors rather than a remake butchering a work. BUT, in this case you have a BIG name involved, and its the original director... so this is different than some of the other recent remakes... it has me a little intrigued of the possibilities here.
And maybe a new movie will also introduce a whole new generation obsessed with sparkling vampires to PKD and better fiction that what's they've been introduced to thus far

Oh, and a planet full of ANDROIDS, just like Westworld.
:)
Byron i have to wonder if you have seen Nicholas Cage PKD film, Paycheck etc
There is no way in the near future there will be maybe a new movie that introduce a whole new generation to PKD. It will like always some that read after old Blade Runner and maybe Minority Report. No single quality PKD film that will draw in more readers than other in the near future.
The mathematical facts are they only use PKD name to sell films in Hollywood. Usually bad films that wont make people go after the books.

never lose hope ... Scanner Darkly was a sterling effort to do something GREAT with the PKD franchise - it was just a (visual) one-trick poney with no proper direction.
Close, but no cigar, imho...
I havent seen Scanner Darkly because i couldnt stand it for more than 20 minutes of it as you say it was one trick poney visuals.
PKD story like that deserve a good live action film.
Its funny or sad that its the closest we have come to PKD style since the lines, characters was similar to his writing style.

Onward... still FLOW MY TEARS adaptation - eh?

one the best book adaptations ive seen in that it stuck strictly to the story with only a few small character changes. Even the humnour remained like the scene with the bike.
If you like the book then im suprised anyone wouldnt like the movie.

The visual effect, the way the film was presented in cartoon-o-vision, wore off real quick and then you were left with a weak narrative journey - for me. I didn't like what the director allowed the actors to get away with, they 'monkeyed around' too much ... a crew can have TOO MUCH FUN, ya know.
And it's like the Bike Scene which was funny, but it just felt like a massive telegraph or sucker punch. It was funnier on the page, somehow.
I realise Scanner Darklky is destined to become a Cult Classic in a couple of years' time (when no one else can seem to find a way to make an original PKD film). I wonder when Hollywood's gonna take on my re-vamped-1950's screen adaptation of 'Game Players of Titan'?

But a cartoon Keanu Reeves acts much better than a real-life Keanu. :)

Why not do something similar to what they are doing with Aliens. Make either a sequal or a prequel that is set in the same general world but expands the universe with new characters and explores the philosophical boundaries of the material--that could work.
No reason to use the same characters.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to what they do with any new movie. A great idea (like many of PKD's) can act as a seed for interesting outgrowths...
I'm wondering if there might even be a Blade Runner video game released to coincide with the movie. Of course, the game would probably be even further from the book than the movie, but still, I'd probably have fun playing a Blade Runner game

i hated A Scanner Darkly on first viewing, then after a night of partying i viewed it again and was blown away.
I now watch the movie every month or so and im still absorbed. Easily the best adaptation of any PKD book and is easily one of my top 5 movies of all time.
Im not much of a keanu Reeves fan but this is one of his, if not his finest moment on screen, he was excellent.
I thought the rotoscoping worked wonderfully and did not distract from the plot.

I've got a Blade Runner PC game - it's about 10 years old, but it was pretty good.

Scanner is the best film of a PKD story so far. That is, it's closest to the source material and is damn good!. I probably like Blade Runner best, but that's definitely based upon, rather than adapted from.
true. Linklater was able to keep that movie close to the book, and I too was worried about the 'cartoonish' look, but in the end I loved it.. think it worked better that way than using CGI for the scramble suit and Arctor's split personalities.
Also, there is a graphic novel version of the film, that has the same look as the film. It works well as an adaption of the novel in my opinion too. I'd recommend it to any PKD fan that likes graphic novels. Perhaps those scared of the film would prefer this format. Found here: A Scanner Darkly Graphic Novel

Blade Runner prequel to be called "TYRELL CORPORATION"? or something?
So no MOOD MACHINE, MERCERISM or KIPPLE then.

DADOES was my first experience with a PKD book about 25 years ago. I read it when the Director's Cut of the first Blade Runner film was about to have its limited theatrical release. I'd love to say that I loved the book and immediately read all of PKD's offerings, but at the time I thought it was just OK. I also read Ubik, didn't really get it, and abandoned PKD for several years. About 10 or so years later I read The Man in the High Castle and loved it - since then I've been picking away at PKD's offerings at the rate of about one per year. I've always meant to re-visit DADOES (I re-read Ubik earlier this year) so I'm excited to finally have an excuse to do it.

Now, while I'm a fan of Scott's original version, I'm so looking forward to see how much of Philip K Dick's original novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (much of which is missing from the first cinematic stab at it) is re-folded into the 'Blade Runner' reboot.
Will Scott be fool enough to dial the MOOD MACHINE?
Will Scott be insane enough to investigate MERCERISM.
Will Scott be sage enough to warn us about KIPPLE?
My pet theory about the Blade Runner world is THERE ARE NO HUMANS LEFT and a 'technical glitch' like 'fate' or 'chance' allows some androids to be Empathic and others to miss the off-world shuttle.
But that would be too much for any Hollywood film to reveal, surely...
