I just read this book recently (the review sounded great but I must admit I found it just plain odd) - The Valley of Secrets by Charmain or Charmian Hussey.

I totally agree too, I picked it up simply because of the title. It sounded like a great mystery story .. turned out to be totally weird and just a small mystery. I didn't get to into it. It really bugged me when he wouldn't just pick up the darn book/journal thing and read it! He would put it off till the next day or something .. it was annoying. >.< Once it got to the end, I did enjoy it though. <3
So theres this boy who was an orphan, but finds out he has a relative who just died somewhere and he inherits this big house. So basically he finds this log/journal/diary whatever and reads about how his grandfather/uncle/er something and this other man when into the Amazon[or some other jungle] and found these Indians and found a hidden species of a thing that resembled a harry caterpillar but bigger [AH! It was a -insert adjective here-womp! [example: tigerwomp]]
So anyway he finds his uncle's Indian friend living in a cave with all the womp things and unravels this mystery or something. I can remember most of the plot and minor details clearly- but the title slips my mind. Something about a secret ..
