message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Dammit. I knew someone was going to respond like Stacia. I should know better.

What's it like? Do you sit in the dark? Does that work with particular music?

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I very seldom do.

message 5: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 17, 2011 03:49PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I listen to headphones a lot while I'm on the computer and sometimes I'll notice that 15 minutes have gone by and I haven't responded to someone. If a song is good I just want to focus on the song. I'm a huge daydreamer though...maybe I'm crazy but I make up mini music videos and movies in my head to go with the music.

Ema | 53 comments No, I have to do something while listening to music.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I just listen when I'm first learning a song - either learning the lyrics, or lately, learning it on an instrument.
I've been playing the ukulele a bit, trying to learn some guitar, and I've been playing the clarinet again. I used to play clarinet as a kid, and I found a used one for sale at a flea market recently and got it fixed up.

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Yeah, most of my music listening is done that way. The best listening. Second best is when i'm at the computer, but I'd usually rather have a movie on or something. And yeah, I sit in the dark. When I spent so much time at this as a teenager I'm sure my parents thought I'd be growing out of it. Nope!

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments no. i am slightly ADD so i have to be reading something, eating something or burning something when listening to music

Usually not.

message 11: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I change with this. Currently, I'm not really listening to music.

message 12: by Tom (new)

Tom Foolery (tomfoolery) | 107 comments Not as much as i used to, or as much as i'd like to. I used to sit on the porch when it rained, and smoke and listen to the blues or jazz or Bach. Alas, i've moved. No more porch.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Does sitting on the train listening to music count as doing nothing?

I'm sure your neighbors are very pleased of this:)

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments btw - i have noticed that Americans (by that i mean USA'ers so you canucks and mexicans can relax)have some of the hardest time just doing nothing. in other countries people can sit at a cafe with nothing and just relax. or on a park bench. or just squat by a tree. for 9 hours and do nothing. we're like a country of ADD'ers. i also noticed that this post has about as many grammatical and otherwise poor writing skills errors as any i've ever seen on TC.

actually please pick up your computer screen, turn it upside down and shake it to erase this whole rambling mess

It does!

message 17: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Well, I am always thinking at the same time. so maybe I am doing something.

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thinking ain't doing.

message 19: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Okay,that's settled!

message 20: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I will put on the headphones from time to time and tune out the rest of the world while I listen to the music. Generally though, I'm listening to music as a backdrop to work.

message 21: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Sitting and concentrating on listening is the best way to get the full flavor of classical music.

Most rock is so bland that you have to do something else while listening, if only to stay awake.

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I disagree with the rock comment, as you might guess. There's some good stuff out there once you step away from commercial radio.

I can sit and listen to live music and not do anything else, but I don't usually listen to recorded music without doing something else at the same time.

I read an interesting article recently about our increasing inability to do nothing. Even standing in line we're checking messages and writing texts and reading ebooks etc...can't remember where I read it.

I have to say that my favorite thing about the clothing-optional music festival I played at last weekend was that cell phones were entirely banned from the grounds. I loved that everyone was fully present. One of the best listening audiences I've ever encountered.

They told us in advance not to make that joke because they had heard it a hundred times. It wasn't quite in the contract, but it was in the attachment that came with the contract.

Do we really do nothing else except listen with live music though? Me, I'm watching the musicians and what they're doing, maybe other people in the crowd, stuff like that.

message 27: by Michael (new)

Michael Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "I've been playing the ukulele a bit,"

Is the ukelele difficult? I'd like to learn how to play the guitar but I can't and I thought a ukelele might be simpler?

Yeah, there's a visual component too, but unless your eyes are closed while you've got headphones on there is probably a visual component any time you're "only" listening.

Yes! Ukulele is a lot easier, Michael, both to learn, and on the fingertips. I love my ukulele. I'm trying to learn guitar, too, and play it until I get frustrated, and then I pick up my ukulele with relief.

God that sounds wonderful. I wish I had a screened porch. I wish I could smoke. But I wouldn't listen to jazz or Bach.

Who said rock is bland?!?! Was that you, Phil!? What in hell is wrong with you?! Must I inundate this thread with youtube videos?!? Good God man! My blood pressure is going to shoot through the roof!

What clothing-optional music festival?

I used to listen to music and do nothing else when I was in high school and living at home with hours of empty free time. Headphones!!!! Sometimes now I get home and just sit in the car because I want to hear the rest of the song. But that's about as close as I usually get to just listening to music.

RA you start the best threads.

(there, whoever makes fun of me to creating 7 different response posts in a row at the bottom of threads. is that better?!)

message 33: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments So many rock songs I hear are nothing but the same 7-10 words repeated over and over and over and over.....

Where's the music? Learn a few more chords, maybe?

message 37: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments In my teens and twenties I spent time being still and listening to records. You know, the vinyl ones.

Now the only time I really focus on a piece of music is when I hear it performed live. Or when I'm listening to satellite radio in the car and I have to sit in the driveway and listen to the rest of a song before I get on with my day.

message 38: by Helena (new)

Helena | 1056 comments Whenever I have something new, I like to sit and listen to it without doing anything else at all. If I'm listening to something I really love, I'll stop whatever I'm doing and listen.

I don't think it's necessary to enjoy rock music at all. I know many people that dislike it, they are Canadians though.

message 39: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I used to sit and listen to music all the time. Now, if I listen at all, it's while I'm online or driving. Most of my listening used to be done in the car, but now that I listen to audio books and pod casts, I don't listen to much music at all.

It's funny - I have trouble listening and doing nothing else, but I can't listen to music at the same time as something else that I need to have any attention on. So I listen to music while I run, or take a bath, or read something light, but I can't have anything with lyrics or guitars on while I write. Music takes too much of my attention. I hear all the parts. Driving is the only exception - I can drive and listen to music - but if I'm following directions or lost or in a strange city or bad traffic or something I have to turn the music off because I'll start listening and forget I'm looking for something.

Lila | 146 comments In highschool it seemed all I did was veg out and listen to music. It is sooo relaxing. Now not so much. I do try and I enjoy it when I can but life is hectic. When I get the chance my wonderful children usually interrupt me.

message 42: by Ettore (new)

Ettore Pasquini In general if it's average music I can listen to it while doing other things, otherwise if it's awesome music it kinda demands my attention. (Otherwise I wouldn't consider it awesome.)

The only exception I guess it's ambient music.

For new music I try to make a bigger effort to listen to it carefully.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I've been listening to music in the dark lately. Just listening. Sibelius's second, especially, because I've got tickets for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's performance in January and I need to re-aquaint myself with the work.

message 48: by Lynda (new)

Lynda I love listening to music, all kinds of music, but for listening without distraction I prefer jazz, classical, instrumental and swing.

I generally close my eyes and rest on my recliner.

janine | 7709 comments They're afraid you may not understand them, and subtitles don't work on cds?

message 50: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I do things while listening to music and sometimes I like to just get lost in the music. I close my eyes, listen to the words or instruments and let it wash over me, through me. I almost always move, sway, incline my head while I hear a beautiful note. There are times when I can be still but I am still apt to rock or tap. I can be the most still when I listen to instrumental or classical but I promise you, even then, there is a sense of movement.
