Jan (janoda) | 42 comments And it might have been a trilogy, I'm not sure. I read this as a teenager translated into Dutch, from the library but I can't find it anywhere.

The King is the ruthless warrior type, who finds the girl (and her magic - to see the future I think) and binds her to him for her powers. They fall in love but he ends up betraying her to make a profitable marriage for the crown. She sees the future, and this shows that his decision causes doom for all of the people included (there's also a sergeant of some kind involved).

In the sequel it's about the girl's daughter, and the crown prince (who's actually the son of the queen and the sergeant). The daughter has a power of her own, but I'm not sure which. They have trouble with a bastard son of the King, who is into BDSM. There's a lot of intrigue, the prince is a bit stupid, and the daughter has to sacrifice a lot. She foresees the prince's future in the end, which isn't good, so I assume there is a third book.

Ofcourse, since I was a teenager, I mostly remember the spicier details, but the world was actually quite interesting, and there were a lot of politics involved. I think it was so alternate version of Amerika (it was called Merigo or something) which had reverted to medieval technology? All magic had a consequence as well.

Jan (janoda) | 42 comments I think the girl's name started with N. In the beginning she was living with magic wielders I always imagined a bit like Yoda. (Just in how they looked). Her use of magic makes something explode I think (because all magic really has a cost).

Some spoilery information about the relationship and ending.
(view spoiler)

I believe the over was whitish with a woman on it in a greenish cape. It was drawn, not a picture.

Cera Anne Kelleher-Bush is the author! I'm not sure which book in her trilogy it is, but the first one is Daughter of Prophecy, and reading more closely you mention the sequel, so yes, this is the first book.
