Hi James. We welcome authors and have specific spaces on the group for them to promote their works. We ask that you read the group rules so you'll know where you can promote your books.

I know it has been so long since I have been active in good reads. Some of the people here may still remember me...

I just wanted to share that my mother who posted here occasionally, until her stroke made it hard to navigate the internet, passed away January 2nd this year. Patricia Frances Rowell

I know she loved reading these discussion threads, even if she did not post that often.

Hello Hugh...I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I remember her fondly from all of her posts here. (If I remember rightly, she use to keep you in line as well) We've missed both her, and you as well; and hope that you will possibly join us again more often. I lost my mom a few years ago, and know that it is a difficult time for you right now...condolences to you and your family.

David Arrowsmith (davidarrowsmith) | 18 comments Hi all - new member, and big fan of action and adventure fiction. So much so that I was inspired by my love of Elmore Leonard, James Ellroy, Martin cruz Smith Lee Child and Raymond Chandler to pen my own trilogy of short stories. As an aspiring author I'd love to share more info about this with you all (in the appropriate places) if admins are happy with that. Great to meet you all! David Arrowsmith, author of Nevada Noir

Hello, to David and Stewart. Just a reminder, we have very specific rules for authors as far as advertising their books. We keep this group friendly for members and authors. As a result, I have had to delete your intro, Stewart. You are welcome to repost an intro without links.

A.C. Schneider (acschneider) | 1 comments Hello everybody!

Character or plot. Which is more critical in action/adventure?

message 1917: by Graeme (last edited Jun 03, 2020 05:37PM) (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi A.C. Great question, a little like air and water you gotta have both. But like air and water, you'll notice the absence of one faster than the other.

Great characters lend themselves to great plots, whereas an excellent plot can be ruined by a poorly drawn character. So, I think I lean to character (air) being more fundamental than plot (water).

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 5150 comments Mod
Hi, AC. I agree with Graeme. You need both to have a successful book, but a character has to be impactful enough to keep readers engaged.

message 1919: by David (new)

David Arrowsmith (davidarrowsmith) | 18 comments Another vote for the (slightly cop-out) answer of “both”. It’s a sliding scale - a great world or compelling narrative can help overcome a weaker character/set of characters, or a great character can keep you reading even if the story doesn’t quite progress... but go too far wrong with either and you will eventually lose your reader.

message 1920: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Bailey My name is Jeff Bailey. I’m a retired engineer/scientist turned thriller writer. Of late, I’ve been enjoying posting reviews of the books that I read. I like good thrillers, Sci-Fi’s, and well done horror. I think that this is going to be an interesting group.

Welcome Dustin...We are glad to have you here and we welcome authors, but we do have pretty strict rules in this group about where to post author promotions:

"Authors are more than welcome on this group, but we ask you to be considerate to members and keep your self-promotions appropriate. If you would like to announce your books or promote yourself as an author, including blog posts, or contests, etc., use the Promotions section. We also have a Member-Authors section and you are free to post self-promotions in that section as well. Any excessive and unnecessary promotion of books is subject to deletion or editing by moderators."

You can find this information in our 'Rules' thread. I have deleted your introduction, but you are welcome to repost a new one without the promo.

Iain Charles | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I am an author, a reader and a traveller. I read at night, sleep on planes, and write in the early mornings. I am attracted to location elements of a story. Where exactly are they? Why there? How do the surroundings impact on the narrative?
Yes, yes, I know it is supposed to be all about character but I don't picture the characters in my head. But I do picture the surroundings.
Weird?

message 1937: by David (new)

David Arrowsmith (davidarrowsmith) | 18 comments Love this Charles! I think setting, and the atmosphere of the locale, is key to my writing and perhaps a way for me to travel vicariously back to these places and also try and share them with readers. Love to hear that it’s also important to at least one other writer and reader!

message 1938: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Back in 2008, I read Precious Cargo. On his web site, Ford had a link to Google Earth 3D so I could actually look around the Puget Sound area where the action takes place. The link is in my review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I was blown away by the marriage of tech to the story back then, but I can't say I found it necessary. He described it well & I grew up on the water. I also had some familiarity with the region having lived & traveled through there for a year. It brought back great memories of a couple of boat trips & a ferry ride from Vancouver Island into Seattle, though.

Not weird at all. I believe location and settings add so much drama and colour to the story besides also impacting the tone and the emotional content of the story. I try to make my setting descriptions as vivid as possible when I'm writing. I believe it should be as impactful as watching a movie.
