Why is it that there aren't (in my opinion) many new ideas for teenage books?

I just cant understand it! I've been looking up so many blurbs but for some reason they all seem similar and I'm just getting over all the vampires, werewolves, fairies etc. How about you guys? I mean there are still some out there that are fantasy that I like for example the hunger games and divergent but like intertwined I'm just over!

I don't mind paranormal romances, I'm glad that different types of books are coming out now. I've actually taken to dystopian books and more away from paranormal. I have definitely started to shift away from vampires and maybe even werewolves. I pretty much won't even read the summary for any vampire book anymore because they all just seem the same, no big new ideas there. Paranormal books that I will read are angels, fallen or otherwise. Paranormal romances probably won't ever go away, but I think that they are starting to run their course and other genres are starting to take their place.

Yeah i know what you mean! There's so many books that are definately too similar to popular books like 'Twilight', it's all: vampire this and vampire that! It's so annoying, I want to read a book about a paranormal creature that hasn't been written about yet. You really should read 'Starcrossed' by Josephine Angelini, it's about demigods ands it's absolutely brilliant, takes your mind off the old boring vampires ;)

I'm not sure maybe it takes time for a great story to emerge besides most writers are pressured by deadlines so their stories aren't usually their best. It also ties to the whole thing with movies now. Most screen play writers can't think of new exciting movies so their making books into movies which i don't mind.

I think that you could have a new idea but it would always cross with a popular book like twilight or harry potter or the city of bones because that's were you would get inspiration of your favourite books and authors

Aw, well look at other genres not just paranormal teen; perhaps Tamora Pierce her series starts with a teenage girl switching places with her twin brother and going off to become a knight - there are other series in that world which she has written too.

Or Diana Wynne Jones, her Howl's Castle and Nine Lives of Christopher Chant aren't set to our world really but have magic and other worlds.

Um, in regards to similarities in YA books these days. I would say that is like the old stand by of sex being able to sell most things these days. Just in the literary world, finding a niche that is a big hit really rakes in the bucks and many don't want to lose out on that kind of opportunity. Hence the over saturation.

Now as for paranormal books in the YA genre in general. I have to say there has most likely been these stories since the days of Bram Stoker's vamps became a hit. Cause I know even in my teens (I'm 27 now) and well before Twilight even came out there was versions of paranormal books out there. Some of my faves at the time were The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause In the Forests of the Night (Den of Shadows, #1) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes Demon in My View (Den of Shadows, #2) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause and even a sleuth of all things R.L. Stine. So yea I doubt the paranormal is going anywhere soon. As for the romance side of it, I have yet to see anybody be able to take out the romance genre in EVER. Regardless of what flavor it is.

So yea, best advice, try jumping around in different flavors of YA books and try something new. Might surprise yourself what you like more than even the dystopian side of things. Cause for sure the more popular versions at the moment aren't going away any time soon.
