Making the Most of Audible Dot Com

Carol: I hope you can find out more from Marcy and others since I am using audible.com mainly for the one book a month I get with my credit and I like them to be "pricier" books so I feel I am getting a good deal!
I love being able to sync my portable device (currently a Sanza Clip+ MP3 player) which I love, and then have the ability to track my progress or even listen a bit more at night from my PC and the audible Manager software.
Carol: this thread is from the Audiobooks group regarding where to get content and how to listen. There are a few comments about audible.com interspersed.

Thanks, Ann, this is helpful. You mentioned elsewhere that one could receive emails from audible.com on sales. Can you remember how to set that up?

Carol: For audible.com members it is under the Account Details link at the upper right of the home screen, then to email preferences. When I took a hiatus from membership (I had been a member years ago and had a pile of audio books unread) I guess my settings got changed and I didn't notice when I resumed membership that my setting was no email alerts. I just recently fixed that after Marcy mentioned getting a lot of notices about members only specials I was missing out on. Thanks, Ann. I've already filled my Wish List with selections of the more expensive variety, now I'm ready for some sales! Still haven't decided what to use my first credit for. I hear on another GR group that a new Elizabeth George-Lynley book is coming out in the fall, maybe I'll wait till then.Ann wrote: "Carol: For audible.com members it is under the Account Details link at the upper right of the home screen, then to email preferences. ..."
Carol-As Ann said, the sales are often quite good on audible.com and I think they are about due to have another. I've gotten 2 books for 1 credit and 3 for 2 credits in the past. Sometimes, they offer members discounted audios for prices way less than the value of your credits (I've paid $5-$10 for great audios) and you then have the option of paying, rather than using credits for these. These are often time sensitive deals, sometimes with windows as short as 48 hours, so be sure to fill your wish list for easy decision making when the time comes :-)
Marcy, I'm one step ahead of you, LOL. I've already got a few books in my wish list, including a bunch of Agatha Christie's. I've got my finger poised for the next sale! Thanks.Marcy wrote: "These are often time sensitive deals, sometimes with windows as short as 48 hours, so be sure to fill your wish list for easy decision making when the time comes :-)

OMG, audible.com is having a 50% off sale on 50,000 titles. I looked at my wish list and everything is on sale, with lots for under $12. I'm in trouble now....

I commend your restraint, Ann.I am hoping that they offer soon a way to organize books. I'm already getting sick of scrolling through my 43-book library to find the next one to download. They could even make it so you could manually drag stuff up and down in the list, like on fictfact.com. Not the preferred choice to folders, but at least I could drag the ones I've already read down to the bottom of the list.

Agree totally Carol, the search engine leaves a bit to be desired too. considering audible.com is owned by Amazon, you would think they would eventually upgrade some of those features... I am just curious since my K2 doesn't quite as easily get audio books since that version can't download them over 3G, just through a USB connection, but DD's K3 shows my audible titles on her Kindle menu in archives (I think that was what she said) - have you tried listening to any of the audible audio books on your Kindle? Could you organize them there?
I am glad you are enjoying them (43 books!)

I suppose I could but I listen while doing stuff like washing dishes, exercising, walking, etc., and I'm not gonna carry around my Kindle while I do. But you've got me thinking.. I wonder if the book will play on my Kindle for the iTouch once I've downloaded the book?Ann wrote: "DD's K3 shows my audible titles on her Kindle menu in archives (I think that was what she said) - have you tried listening to any of the audible audio books on your Kindle? Carol: good question! I am wondering and assuming they will play (hopefully) on the Kindle Fire tablet. but for listening while walking around you can't beat my Nano. I like the recent upgrade to the icons for maneuvering - it is a bit easier. A lot of Audible's sales seem to force you toward certain titles. Buying 3 for the price of 2 isn't a great deal to me when I don't want any of the pre-selected books. But Audible usually does a good sale in the spring that isn't limited on titles. So I look out for that.
The other deal I discovered more recently is that if you let your credits pile up to three or so (this happened to me because of reduced commutes during the pandemic), Audible worries that you're losing interest. They told me if I used one of my credits, they'd give me a credit. Free!
So that was nice. I don't know if they'd offer that again but it was a definite bonus.
Eric Ambler's The Light of Day (basis of the movie Topkapi) has been on my reading (listening) list for a while. It's one of those books that's actually a better deal on CD than Audible, ie, cheaper than a credit. So I was just waiting until I finished my last book-on-CD to buy The Light of Day. Much to my amazement, when I went on this morning to order the CD, Audible is offering it for free. No credit needed. Downloaded! Saved $10 and the hassle of disc listening.

When credits expired after 5 I would call up and ask if they would reinstate the one I just lost, and they happily did that. Now that each credit has an expiration date of about a year out (I think) I don't have that problem any more. Because I get books on CD from the library I save my audible credits for those I want to read right away that have a long hold list. But works for me. I love Audible and I thank Ann (I think that's who it was) for introducing me to it years ago.

Russ: I agree, the limited title sales on audible rarely have more than one book that interests me. I use my credits mostly for longer length books, books not available on Overdrive, non fiction that may take me longer to listen to, or new releases I don't want to wait for at the library. I get my credits annually, 24 all at once, and then try to manage them to last all year. In 2020 I was out with a month to wait for my new ones. It was agony! They offered me a three pack to purchase every time I logged on.

Carol: I think I may have recommended audible to you, I'm glad you have enjoyed it. I discovered something about credit expiration dates this year. I accidentally purchased a book with a credit while I was reading the Kindle version and requested they refund it (which is a good benefit) the replacement credit had a one year expiration which was extended past the expiration of the credit it replaced. i don't listen to many audio books, but let me recommend switching to libro.fm for your audios. it works like audible does, BUT instead of supporting amazon, it supports your local book store so the $$ from your purchases goes right back to your communityhttps://libro.fm/
Sherry: a worthy idea indeed. Back when my audiobook listening was highly concentrated on my commute, and double what it is now while working remotely I would definitely look into libro.fm. I currently try very hard to get most audiobooks from the library. If I get to the point again of being out of credits, libro.fm will be my go to choice as an option.Audible has upped their game by adding content like podcasts, and unfortunately quite a bit of exclusive audiobooks making it hard to leave. I'll check out the player options like playback speed, etc.

My problem is that I have dozens of purchased and unread books in my audible library, and there's no way to take them with me.
Sherry: Good to know libro.fm is intent on competing with Amazon. I saw they had an offer to switch. I'll have to see if the offer holds for keeping both. ;) I just got my annual credits. I'm a Stitcher listener for podcasts, so not really interested in audible's podcast offerings, especially if they try to go exclusive.
