Jordan Walker (Jordan739) | 104 comments Okay, so this is the second group I’ve been in that has made reference to me being an Indie author. So here we go confession time.

I do know Melissa Myers through WoW. She was my guild leader when she still played and I have spoken with her online. She has healed me, ran heroics with me, and talked with me in guild chat *gasp. When she asked if I would read her book I will admit I was hesitant, one never expects someone they know to have true talent or at least I didn’t. When I realized I truly liked the book I offered to help her promote it….her response “Lol you don’t have to.” At the time I was confused, Haha I get the joke now. I somehow missed that memo stating that Indie authors were the new peasants of society.

While I do consider Melissa an online friend; I do not want to be her in any way shape or form. Please for the love of all that is holy stop suggesting I’m her. I know enough about her life to know it sucks. While she has never whined about it to me; she has talked about wanting to improve it. If my support helps her then I‘m happy to offer it.

I am not the sort of person that supports something if they don’t see merit in it. If I have a friend that cooks at a restaurant and asks me to try the food and I don’t like it, I will not recommend it to others. The same goes for what I’m reading, if I didn’t like it….I wouldn’t mention it. Since I joined this group I have mentioned the book in three discussions….My intro, buddy system, and fantasy recommendations, I don’t’ see any of this as spamming….I mentioned Brent Weeks and Robin Hobb as well…is that spamming? Is there a rule that I missed that states if we don’t know the author’s name you are automatically the author and are self promoting??

I am entitled to my own opinion as is everyone else, if I don’t shove my opinion down your throat what is the issue? I do not follow trends in anything I do; I prefer to follow my own tastes in choices. The discussion thread for ‘In Shades of Grey’ is not forced on anyone….does seeing the title of the book there really annoy people that much?? I am not using infernal psychic powers to force you to click the topic. I’m not demanding you read the book, I’m not holding a sign and screaming ‘Read It!’ If you do great, if you don’t I understand but please don’t censor me in my own little corner when I’m not trying to annoy you. I don’t care if the author is fashionable, main stream or Indie, if I like the content I will support it. I will not follow trends of others. I am not Borg I will not be assimilated.

To the Published Authors on the list: I now have an inkling of what you endured to reach your current status. I admire you for your tenacity and truly appreciate all of the difficulties you endured so that I could enjoy your work. Thank you so much for pushing through all of this BS so that I could escape reality for a while.

To the Indie Authors on the list: I see how difficult your path is after reading the forums. The saying ‘A few rotten apples spoil the bunch’ comes to mind. Because others before you have acted rudely you are all condemned. Your book cannot gain notice without publicity, yet if you talk about your book you are treated like trash by some…it’s quite the dilemma. Let me say…I admire your courage for what you do and support you all. Feel free to send me a link to your work; if I like it…I will support it. I wish I had the confidence to write a book, sadly I don’t. I do however have the ability to support the efforts of others.

That being said, if I have offended others with my opinions I have no apologies. I will not regret my personal beliefs because others do not approve of them, neither will I condemn others for not agreeing with me. It’s ‘Live and let live’ not ‘Live and force others to live like you’. That was the main reason I stopped posting in FBC, I was sick of having my posts deleted when I disagreed with something. I truly like this group and I enjoy reading the discussions, but I will not allow others to go out of their way to be rude to me without speaking up.

Okay…../rant off I’m done with bitching.

To Mrs.Joseph thank you for linking the book and defending the discussion thread.
To Dawn thank you for your support there as well.

~Jordan

I missed some fun somewhere, damnit.

message 3: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) You missed several people being rude to someone somewhere...

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

message 4: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) And no problem, Jordan. If you were running around pushing the book like crazy, that would probably annoy me. But I see absolutely nothing wrong with you naming a book you like and discussing it in this group, even if you do know the author. You're not endlessly pimping it, and you're not holding anyone at gunpoint, forcing them to read the discussion. We've just got some rude people around here... Sorry about them.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Dawn. I've ignored that thread since the book didn't interest me.

How'd I know it'd be Kevin before I clicked... AHAHAHAHAHA he didn't even check the book title. That's classic.

Also, Mach, I am dissapoint.

^Agreed.

Don't worry about them. Enjoy your book and your conversation. I might have joined in - it does sound interesting - but I am overloaded right now.

;-)

message 7: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I open all of the threads... I'm nosy like that.

message 8: by Traci (new)

Traci Funny, I was interested in trying the book but I don't have a kindle, I have a nook. I haven't read many indie books but I keep meaning to read more, especially from writers I know from my clubs. Sometimes I'm guilty of thinking an author promoting their work as annoying, I'm only human. But I also find myself feeling bad about it, mostly there was one that did mention his book EVERY chance he got. I think honesty is best. When you're the writer admit it right away. If you know the author maybe it's best to say that too. And you do bring up a good point. We all have our favorite authors we push for others to read. Maybe the difference is smaller than I thought.

message 9: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) It's funny that Kevin says he didn't know the difference between the two books, as he was in FBC LOL'ing when Jordan was being belittled by their mod. That same mod was also accusing the author of stealing the title from the other author.

But I backed you up over there, Jordan and I'll do so here as well. I've seen spammers. Anyone that has been around very long should know the difference.

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments To quote Death, "OH. DRAMA."

I'm sorry you've been given a hard time here, Jordan. Didn't read the thread myself, but I can extrapolate from the past. This post of yours is pretty damn passive-aggressive in a faux-badass way, in my opinion, but I can certainly see why you're pissed off. Probably is best to practice full-disclosure regarding friendship, but you definitely didn't deserve to be taken to pieces by idiots because you were promoting a book. I'm sorry the asshats have given you a bad feel for the place.

message 11: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 12, 2011 03:44PM) (new)

Jordan I thought your mentioning an unknown author in multiple threads rather suspect the other day, checked both your profiles, saw that she had one whopping friend/fan and that you'd both joined in August. I don't think it was ever in question that you either were the author or knew the author to anyone who took the time to look. With that being said, I'm pretty much the self professed spam police and I take great joy in "yelling" at obnoxious authors or fakes etc etc. I didn't mention anything because you've been really involved in multiple threads and I don't see a problem with your having a book discussion about your buds book. I'm glad you came out and pointed out the obvious but I for one don't see where anyone could really take issue with you. I'm glad to see a newbie that's involved so if I failed to welcome ya before, Welcome to FA :)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments He's not kidding about the spam police thing, he and Ala kind of have an Andy Griffith/Barney Fife thing going on around here. We don't ask which is which, we just call them Gralant.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I must confess... I actually did the same thing Grant did with the profile. And came to the same conclusion since she's been active in the group.

I just hate spammy authors. I can't help it.

message 14: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I did the same, but let it fly because of the activity as well.

How do we know for sure? Is there really any way to know if someone is who it says it is?

Hmmm.

It's sad that that's the only thing you're sorry about.

message 21: by Kevin (last edited Aug 12, 2011 06:29PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I just thought it was a one way conversion between only two people really because no one else was posting anything about the book.

You have respected my quirk and have yet to brandish a nail file in my direction. =) So I will happily respect yours and refrain from adding a sig at the bottom.
Honestly it's a habit I picked up from guild forums and I didn't even pay attention to the fact that I was doing it...be glad I wasn't adding 'For the Horde!' =)

Mach | 572 comments I think Jan and Jordan are the same person both of them being the author, since they both joined in august, write comments about the same book and the comments from them seem like they are from the same person. I thought i would call her out and stop the spamming. Sorry if i offended you with my one comment about the issue but i hate spammers. Anyone remember that guy who called himself M? he did exactly the same thing with two profiles promoting the same book.

Life is hard as an indie author but i assure you no one here is going to buy a book because two people say good things about it. If most of the regular members where to read it and say positive things, someone might buy it but the way you are doing it, is not going to increase your books sales.

Jan doesn't "sign"" her posts though. :) I'm keeping an open mind about the whole thing. I'd rather be friendly and fooled than not friendly and wrong. But M was just way too annoying to let go.

Fail at the Sherlock Holmes attempt though, Watson is disappointed in you.

And btw.. I checked Jan's profile and she joined in June...pretty cool when you actually look up a fact before you post eh. But wait...it says she likes horses too!! *sigh *face palm

Gee..do you need DNA, Birth Certificate from both?? The reason I mentioned the book is I got a message from Amazon that I liked such and such a book I might like.... That is how I found the book. I'm not going to apologize for liking it nor mentioning it. It seems you are the one that has the problem. But if everyone would like to post the email I got from Amazon or anything else to put this to rest I will. It's beat a dead horse to death.
If I am an author I was I was getting lots of money because this doggone economy is making me a grouch!!

message 32: by Jan (new)

Jan | 62 comments Sorry when I get upset my typing suffers and I've only had one cup of coffee so far!!

message 33: by Jan (new)

Jan | 62 comments Another thing I have not read all of the posts on all of ths lists so I don't know for sure. Surely Jordan and I are not the only ones that have mentioned this book, as I'm sure Amazon didn't just send this email to just me. I'm sure it went to other Fantasy book lovers. I would love to think I set that high in their expectations of buying but I don't buy that often.

message 34: by Mach (last edited Aug 19, 2011 05:27AM) (new)

Mach | 572 comments You and "jordan" are the only one that have reviewed this book on GR. No one else has even mentioned this book before you two came along. What annoys me is that you are using the Buddy Read system to promote your book. I think that Jason should remove it as a buddy read and in the future i recommend that there has to be atleast three people interested in a book before it becomes a buddy read, that way we don't get in situations like this.

message 35: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Dude.

Drop it.

message 36: by Jan (new)

Jan | 62 comments Well I have not reviewed the book! My daughter did and I'm sorry if she messed up and used my account. My kids and grandkids don't believe that such a tiny thing could set off such a frenzy as this has created. You are a very "small" person and I'm glad I read Jordan's rant. I'm also very glad that you are not the mod because what you demand doesn't make it so. I enjoyed the discussion with Jordan and if you or anyone else didn't want to read it, you were not forced. That is why I skim over some of the discussions they just do not interest me. I suggest you do the same.

message 37: by Mach (last edited Aug 19, 2011 06:32AM) (new)

Mach | 572 comments You got shut down over on Fantasy Book Club with your self promotion and your posts about this book where deleted, i wonder why. Why am i the bad guy here when i am trying to stop self promotion, i mean when other author's have done this in the past everyone have been ready to remind them that it is not appropriate to promote outside of the self promotion thread but this time it's ok, what's the difference between Jan here and the countless other author's that have done the same?

message 38: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Machavelli, you are way out of line. You have no proof for the accusations you're making, and you are approaching this in a very rude manner. Drop it.

Jan | 62 comments #1 If I have been dropped by any of the other lists I'm on they have failed to tell me. I have posted on all of them today.
#2 And most important is "I'm not an author!" Would love to be, but I'm not.
#3 You and my granddaughter have a lot in common, have you considered Anger Management Classes.
This is the end of discussion of this for me!

message 41: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments You don't really have evidence that it is self-promotion, though. Also, just... the concept. An author creating two other accounts (with completely different writing styles) to start a (self-contained) discussion and make it last for a week? That seems like waaaaay too much work. :P

message 42: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Walker (Jordan739) | 104 comments Can I just point out the obvious that the book was only released in June...umm that may be why it only has two reviews here. Omg lol this has gone past annoying and moved into amusing for me.

Oh and Jan, you are way off btw if I'm going to be you damn it I get to choose how you rant. It should be with improper grammar and alot more sarcasm!! Think *asshole when you type and then phrase it politely please, that way it's proper Jordan style. roflmao.

On a side note a tip for the day kiddies....Lead paint chips are not healthy please do not ingest them, they are NOT part of the basic food groups.

message 43: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Exactly my thoughts.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Mach, I applaud the zeal with which you go after self-promoting spammers. Hell, it reminds me of my own :P

I've been rude as hell to spammers before, especially here in FA, but there's always been proof of it. Without it, there isn't much you can do. And in this case, there really isn't any proof. Add in the fact that these two have actually contributed to the group outside of mentioning this book, and well... it just doesn't look like spamming to me.

message 45: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Michael wrote: "But with one of my good "friends" having left the group and now the CONSTANT berating of members by other members who think that they have the right to mod is out of control. There are three mods for this group. The last time I checked they are all pretty active here as well. If you don't like the way something is going, PM it to a Mod and let them handle it. "

I'd also like to point out that the mods encouraged the discussion to begin with. Yeah.

message 46: by Traci (new)

Traci *sigh* This is doing more harm than good. Regardless of opinion I think we should let this go. All of us. Let's not ruin the best club here.

Mach, I really don't think it's worth it.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Move along ladies and gentlemen, there's nothing to see here. :)

So, as long as a member does not make a nuisance of themselves they are a welcome member of FA.

Let's all chill out and go read a good book. Why not check out http://www.goodreads.com/recommendati... and see if there are any good books out that you're intersted in. If no, why not read a book you already own and join FA's TBR Reading Challenge: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

Regardless, this thread is starting to cause hurt feelings so it will be closed.
