My husband once returned one of my books to the library thinking it was a library book. I called right away and they had it waiting in the lost and found for me.

Diane (dyniy) | 83 comments Sometimes I use the cards that they give you at the Dr's office with your next appointment. That's how I remember when it is. If I don't have one of those then I use what ever I can find when I need it. I have bookmarks that have cute kitties on them but I can never find them when I need them. Sometimes I'm not too organized. lol

Huw Evans (dochuw) | 140 comments When I was young(er) evryone would insist of giving me leather bookmarks which were fine until the dog died. Its replacement loved them, as well as the wallpaper but that is another story. I now use a combination of postcards, old envelopes, bits of paper, anything that I can find that will mark my place without needing to turn down corners or, even worse, make a mark with a pencil.

message 104: by Samantha (new)

Samantha I have tons of bookmarks and I try to use them but if I forget then I use whatever is around. Paper, receipts, postcards, etc.

message 105: by Penelope (new)

Penelope Marzec (penelopemarzec) | 6 comments I have a huge stack of author bookmarks I've picked up at writers' conferences. However, I don't always have them with me or I lose them when I carry the book around with me. So sometimes I use sticky notes, which stay stuck to the page and never get lost. :^)

cazdoll | 26 comments I try to use bookmarks but I can't always find one when I need it, and the nice one's are always a bit pricey, and I always seem to lose the nice one's

message 107: by Alpha (new)

Alpha (janomega) | 33 comments I use a beautiful leather bookmark that has the quote "Be the change you want to see in the world," by Ghandi for paperbacks. For hardcovers, I use a choice of two metal bookmarks. One says, "All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle," by Francis of Assissi and the other one I don't remember. However they are based off of "Faith" and "Destiny".

I will admit that I fold corners in college text books. They are UNWORTHY of my awesome bookmarks!

message 109: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (MirandaGabrielle) What a fun thread! I love bookmarks. When I was younger, I used to buy all sorts of fun ones when I went to the bookstore. My favorites had bright or fun pictures on them (or ocassionaly fun sayings) and have tassels. However, I read at a voracious rate, and read anywhere. I had the habit of putting the bookmark back into the book somewhere to hold it, and it would invariably fall out and get lost. Or, like Rhonda mentioned, I'd leave them in the book and put them back on the shelf. So, now I mostly use whatever - scraps of paper, kleenex, even my phone. For the most part, I'm just holding the place quickly as I'll be done with the book in a day or two. My favorite bookmart is metal, with green ribbons and beads on the tassel. It says "Wisdom begins in Wonder" by Socrates. I love it, but because it's metal it's too heavy and falls out when I'm reading. :)

message 110: by Diane (new)

Diane | 880 comments I don't like when someone folds the corner of the page this ruins the page, and damages the book. We fine this a lot with library books. I use what ever is handie at the time. A scape piece of paper, envelope, or sometimes a letter. I do try to use bookmarks but I seem to loose a lot of them in books. I am really finding this fun to see what people use. I have even seen books come back to the library with some odd things.

Rory | 1 comments I keep a bouquet of bookmarks in a rubber container, including ones made out of old 35mm film (from a seller previously on Etsy and now on Artfire who has access to prints such as "Tron: Legacy," "The Little Mermaid," and nearly a thousand others it seems), ones related to books (Found on the Owl Square Press website), some fruit photography ones, ones from various booksellers I've purchased books from that I really like, and a metal one titled "50 Books to Read Before You Die." Sometimes I pick from there, but it's not a goal. It reminds me of my own massive reading list that could probably wrap around the earth dozens of times.

Marguerite (lagunatic) | 12 comments Nothing fancy, but I use a paper clip: stays tight, no chance of losing my place!

Sayyeda (literaryhues) | 36 comments I make my own bookmarks :D

message 114: by Athanasios (new)

Athanasios (athanos) I know this isn't going to be too PC but I fold down the corners, I don't mind dog ears and it's my book, I paid for it I can do what I want with it.

message 118: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (teeitup46) | 1 comments I have a bookmark that I received from a bookseller in Hawaii when I purchased some books from her on Ebay and it appeared to be homemade (had Mahalo on it, a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops and the name of a coffee shop, also laminated) and have used it to death; thought it was a nice gesture and would hate to lose it.

I looked at bookstores but they were always too expensive so have started to just collect them when they're sent in the mail with various offers for donations (kinda flimsy but they work and no big loss if lost). Also was in a bookmark swap on Shelfari which was kinda fun. Making some out of X-stitch will be a good project since retirement is in the near future and thought about those perfumed inserts you get in magazines but those probably would not be good for library books. Love to use them in dresser drawers and around the house in hidden areas, great fresheners.

message 119: by Jessi (new)

Jessi | 39 comments I have a fair share of bookmarks ranging from bookstores I got them from to a Wizard of Oz one to one that my friend Kristi made me that is absolutely beautiful and says Dream Big. I've also been known to use library scripts and receipts LOL

message 120: by Marguerite (new)

Marguerite (lagunatic) | 12 comments My local library gives out bookmarks. I also have a hefty assortment of all kinds: leather, homemade paper, embroidered, handpainted and a few inscribed to a reader by an author in 1917!! BUT, my two favorites are a felt one with buttons made by my grandson (has sentiment in glitter!!) and one that came with his school pictures. I never use any of them, though. I like paper clips! :))

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, this is going to sound egotistical, but I use a bookmark from one of my books, But it's only because I have tons of them laying around! ;)

By the way, does anyone else here call them bookmarkers or is that a colloquialism from the Pittsburgh area? Curious....

message 122: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 3 comments I have a bunch of bookmarks sent to me by authors. Plus, someone in our small town apparantly loves to make bookmarks and there's always a pile of them (for free) at the library.

message 123: by Edward (new)

Edward Creter (httpwwwedcoolcom) | 62 comments I like being creative in all aspects of my life, so my idea for a bookmark is either a) a used lottery ticket, or b) a playing card I find on the card--even an Uno card works just as well. Try it!

message 124: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (MirandaGabrielle) Yeah! Inspired by several comments on this thread. I gathered several fun sheets of scrapbooking paper and a laminator to make some bookmarks tonight! I've made several that are "tall" for hardback books and some short ones for paperback. I'm thinking of adding tassels of beads/string to some as well. I also have some ribbon that I think will be fun when laminated. After I finish them up, I'll post a link to some pictures. Thanks for the ideas! :P

message 125: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a few bookmarks but the one I use most often is a magnet type thing that goes across the top of the page. I bought it because the kitten on it looks like one of my own cats. I also have a picture of Pocahontas that my mother drew years ago. That one is pretty much retired because it was started to look a bit frayed and I want to keep it.

message 126: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Sawyer (jensangel) | 2 comments All my bookmarks are gifts. Some are too nice and they sit on my bookshelf as decoration, the loose ones I use in the 2-3 books always going on my nightstand and the magnetic ones go on the book in my purse, so I don't lose my spot.

message 127: by Lina (new)

Lina I use a bookmark shaped like the New York public library, that my brother got for me when he and his girlfriend visited the city two years back. For a book-loving Swedish girl it was the perfect gift!

sonya marie madden | 441 comments i just got the metal page keeper. it attaches to the back of the book and does not tear pages when you turn them.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I like this crafting idea for a bookmark:

Photobucket

They took old books that were in bad shaped and needing tossing and cut out the leather spines to make these. You can get the tassels from the dollar store or wherever for curtains.

message 136: by Priti (new)

Priti Bookmarks, but sometimes even my cellphone will do.. :)

message 137: by Edward (new)

Edward Creter (httpwwwedcoolcom) | 62 comments I get creative and use a loser lottery ticket (the scratch-off type) or a playing card (Ace of Spades, King of Hearts, etc.). Top that!

message 138: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I use bookmarks which are sold at the teacher's stores around NJ. They say something like Reading is the best adventure with a nice picture. I used to use a strip of loose leaf paper till I found these. I also have fancy bookmarks from all over the world that I either bought or were gifts.

message 139: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa O | 67 comments When I was younger I had the most fabulous collection of bookmarks, almost as many as I had books and would always choose accordingly, depending on the theme of the book.

Nowadays though, it tends to be receipts (normally for the book) or whatever scrap pieces of paper are lying around. I have a cute metal bookmark that hooks onto the spine but Im still in the mind of only using it if it suits the book... old habits die hard.

I do however plan to make some of these adorable little bookmark corners: http://go.tipjunkie.com/hm/1174/nheil...

Jojobean I have so many bookmarks its unreal.

message 141: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Welsh (katrinawelsh_) I used to just doggy ear whatever page I'm on, but then I realized what horrible thing I was doing, so I switched to just using the whatever paper was close. Then I kept loosing pieces of paper and most of the time, there were none that was convenient. Now, I just try and remember what page I was on.
