I have a few books that I've literally sprayed perfume on before but I've never thought of doing that. I only sprayed them because I'm a very sensory oriented person so if a book smells bad I have a hard time reading it, the few I've sprayed smelled like pickles of all things. But next time I'll think about doing that, that way I don't have to use my expensive perfume on my books.

I know it sounds weird but if a book smells bad you can put it in the freezer for a few hours and the smell will go away. I read it in article on yahoo and gave it a try with a book I received in a trade and it worked great.

message 53: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) Lol, that does sound weird. But I'll try it next time, thanks for the tip.

Karen K. Miller (karenkm) | 16 comments For the book I keep at home I use a Linda Lael Miller bookmark that I got in the mail. For the book I keep in my purse, I was using a picture ID from work that wasn't being used. I lost it when I did jury duty, so I've been using the card with my juror number printed on it.

Em~Lost In A Dream~ | 40 comments Sometimes a bookmark made out of paper, sometimes regular bookmarks. One of them has the John Keats quote "A thing of beauty is a joy forever"

lol That made me laugh! I would only use my own perfume and I can only wear light scents. I have vocal cord dysfunction, which is a lot like asthma. Certain inhalants and scents make it hard for me to breath.

Ann (goodreadscomanniegirl) | 19 comments I found a huge paperclip bookmark--about 3 inches long & it has the face of a cat glued to one end--I try to use that...if it is not to be found...an empty envelope..an unused kleenex...anything...and reading above, no I don't use anything scented because my mother and sister get ill from all scents...scents I love just won't do around them

Kate Bowyer (kate_bowyer) | 42 comments I bought some old fashion paper suitcase tags that have old stamps on them from Paris, London, Italy, etc. and love them. That's really one of the big things I miss when I read from my Kindle-that I can't use my bookmarks.

Thanks for letting us know about this...I suppose it applies to library slips as well! I;m going to be more careful how I handle them from now on!

message 61: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) I hate folded down pages. I usually use whatever piece of paper is handy. But I also collect freebie bookmarks that maybe used as promo material. Also I belong to an online group where we swap hand made bookmarks.

message 62: by Carol (new)

Carol Keogh (Goodfellow) (carolgoodfellowkeogh) | 1 comments I have a great bookmark tip that I picked up years ago and it is free.. Take a used envelope and cut out a corner from the bound side( you can get 2 per envelope) this corner will fit very neatly on all book pages. You are then left with a beatifully flat book with no bumas as you can get with embroidered or decorated bookmarks. I decorate mine and it doesnt matter how long you leave it in the book, it will not mark..

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I enjoy collecting them too. Have a large collection from getting free promos and such from movie conventions over the years, have a few bookmarks from the local paperback store, some as gifts, some magnetic bible ones that work great, etc.

message 64: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I got this idea form my sister but every year I cut out a strip of card and write down on it whatever book I've just finished reading, whilst using it as a bookmark. Not only does this help me keep track but it also means I can only use it for one book at a time - I used to have a terrible habit of reading 3 at once and then getting bored of them all so having stupid amounts of part finished books around.

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

I mostly read Ebooks so I don't need a bookmark, but when I do, then I just tend to use whatever I can get my hands on: an old postcard, a post-it, a piece of old paper, an envelope, etc.

message 66: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I'm sorry, I just spent 5 minutes staring at the large version of your user pic before realising there was writing next to it ;)
I've never gone out and bought an actual bookmark so used to do pretty much the same thing as you - to me the bookmark is pretty unimportant, it's the place it marks that matters!

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Should I admit that I still have it up in a different tab or maybe keep that bit quiet ;) Ooh, if I had a good printer that would so be my bookmark :D

I don't wanna!! *stomps foot* Oh, okay then, it is a rather good book, just one last look to tide me over until it's back on TV :D

These can be handmade or decorated too. You can make them out of some kind of printed paper or you can paint or stamp a plain white envie.

I find the corner ones better for non-fiction myself though. With fiction, I always end up losing it while I read! I guess because I read in different places.

message 74: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tcornelsen) | 20 comments I use bookmarks that our library makes. The bookmarks we make are far more popular than the ones we get for free, especially with the kids. They just have a picture at the top, with library information on the rest.

message 75: by Zi (new)

Zi (thebookishgamer) | 24 comments I used to (and still do, sometimes) use an old receipt or scrap of paper. But now I'm using actual bookmarks, since I got a bunch from Half-Price Books lol. I do have nicer bookmarks that people gave me, but since my bookmarks tend to get folded or creased over time, I like to keep them looking nice.

I have a metal bookmark, which is pretty, but utterly useless as a bookmark.

message 76: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 441 comments I'd like to have a few pretty bookmarks in place of my any old thing.

message 77: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 441 comments I haven't made one since I was young, but I wonder how a friendship bracelet would work as a bookmark tied off at both ends?

message 78: by Bridget (new)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 165 comments I used to have tons of fancy bookmarks with ribbons and beads and strings. I had some metal ones and all sorts of neat ones I'd get as gifts.

Then I started just using whatever was handy, I use a lot of those annoying magazine inserts that fall out whenever you turn a page. They tend to pile up by me and get nicely tucked into my book of the moment.

message 79: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) Zi, I agree about those metal ones. Useless!

Sonya, it's easy to make your own pretty bookmarks cheap. Just go to a craft store, even Walmart's, and buy some of that pretty scrapbooking paper. It's sturdy and comes in all sorts of designs. You buy it by the sheet for $2 or less. Then you can cut it up into several bookmarks. If you're more ambitious, you can punch a hole at the top and tie a pretty ribbon there. Once you get in the craft store though, I guarantee you'll find hoards of stuff that will give you ideas for making fancy bookmarks! lol!

I'm not even particularly crafty, but it's a simple project that can be done while you watch TV. And kids love to do it!

message 80: by Joe (new)

Joe (skinsjoe) | 100 comments I use just about anything I can find; index cards, real bookmarks, folded post-it notes, magazine inserts, etc. I just grab what ever is close and use that.

message 81: by R.P. (new)

R.P. Dahlke (rpdahlke) I'm always losing bookmarks. Brought back bkmarks from Egypt and have lost every single one! But, then I got a Kindle for Christmas last year, and viola, no more worries about where I stopped reading....yea! Besides, so many wonderful reads for only $.99, Like A DEAD RED CADILLAC or An Uncertain Refuge or Crashed

Diane | 880 comments I have use bookmarks or an envelope to make my books. I volunteer in a library and have seen things people leave in their books for bookmarks. We have found recipes, bills, money, pictures and even DVD's.

What do you do with left items like DVDs??

harshini (watchmeread) Shannon wrote: "Diane wrote: "I have use bookmarks or an envelope to make my books. I volunteer in a library and have seen things people leave in their books for bookmarks. We have found recipes, bills, money, pic..."

Good question! Do you return them?

message 86: by Diane (new)

Diane | 880 comments The answere to the left items is that we try to see who the last person was to check out the books and contact them. If we can't contact them we put them aside and see if someone will claim them. We do try to get things back to the people. We have found note for school work or old test they are just thrown away. but personal things we do try to return.

message 87: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shananigansreads) Oh, that's great! I once thought I left theater tickets in a book but found them in my purse before calling the library. I've wondered ever since what they would do with them if I had left them in there.

Wan (wanwaddell) | 170 comments I'm formal. I actually using a real book mark. It's the picture of my 10 y/o son's school picture. You know.. it's the package that they send home for you to buy. Now they're not only doing the picture-pictures but picture on the keychain and stuffs. Every year, I don't have the heart to send them back so I ended up buying the whole package.

That brings back memories. School Pictures, what parent is going to reject a picture of their own child? My Mom loved the 8X10 pictures and was annoyed that you had to buy all the little wallet sized one too until my relatives actually started asking for pictures. Maybe the school wasn't so dumb after all! LOL

message 90: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda | 7 comments I use whatever is handy..regular bookmarks (without threaded hanger on top - my cats pull them out), metal bookmarks that hang over the spines, or just a piece of paper that is handy. I don't know how many bookmarks I have lost in library books! It is funny but I recently checked out a book that I had read before and found a bookmark I had left in the book! Then of course I forgot it when I returned the book so it is still there for when I check the book out again LOL

message 91: by Robert (new)

Robert (booklover_83) I have a dragonology bookmark that I use and if I am reading more than one book at a time, I use my felt bookmark that has the Chinese kanji for Wisdom on it.

message 92: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (porterak) I uses actual bookmarks. I must have about um well not sure. Maybe 30? That is just a guess. But I use a different one every time I read a book. I just randomly grab one from the pile. I just love them all. But I bet if I don't have one it would just be some scrap thing that I find to use.

message 93: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 441 comments sometimes I cut manilla folders I'm not using anymore and decorate the markers

message 94: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (winterslacker) | 13 comments I print my favorite images and shape them into bookmarks. But that's just recently. I usually buy some cheap inspirational/cute bookmarks. I try not to get the ones with tassels since I have two cats, and well, you know..

message 95: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) If you go to booksignings, the authors are usually giving away bookmarks with their covers printed on them. I have a couple of dozen of those.

So do I a lot of times when I can't find a bookmark. This way if I leave it in the book I'm not out a bookmark. For my own books it is a bookmark or what ever is at hand.

I cross stitch them on Aida or linen and mostly just use scrap fabric that I have left over from projects. Some I fray the edges intentionally, others I actually hem the edges. I've never had a problem with them fraying a lot on their own.
