Devon | 2 comments IF YOU HAVEN'T READ AT LEAST HALF OF THE THIRD BOOK DON'T KEEP READING

**SPOILERS***

I just read the chapters about the Freys taking out the Starks and then Arya being killed. I'm so speechless. I kind of knew it was coming, but still. It was so sad, i almost don't want to keep reading... almost. I was so attached to the characters. Was anyone else this devastated?

message 2: by Aly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aly (Alygator) | 113 comments When I first read it, I was extremely devastated. I had to put the book down for five minutes to collect my thoughts. But then I picked it right back up again because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen!

message 3: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) I had to re-read the last few pages of that chapter. I was devastaded, Martin loves killing off the good guys and leaves us with the bad guys mostly! Read on though Devcoch you may feel a little less devastated...

Devon | 2 comments @aly- that's what i did.. about to pick it back up because it's just nagging at me.

@Rebecca- I can tell, it's slightly frustrating but does make for a captivating read. and okay, that's good to know. i needed a little hope haha

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments Keep reading. All is always not what it seems.

Maja (maja_montero) | 105 comments I was extremly upset! I read the end of the chapter 3 times to make sure I understood it right. I almost threw my kindle across the room, but instead gently threw it on the couch next to me. My hubby looked at me and asked what was wrong and I broke down and started crying while yelling - He just kills them all! Its not fair!!
But I picked it right up and continued... I just had to!

Ornella (angmanok) | 5 comments i just read this part. and i just knew that this thread is about that. i'm so upset right now. it's like ned's beheading all over again

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments *comfort* Ornella

BEST. ADVICE. EVER. =)

Yes. I was devastated and almost threw the book across the room. Persevere! You won't be disappointed. Well, maybe a little, but it's worth it.

message 11: by Ornella (new)

Ornella (angmanok) | 5 comments why do good guys die in these books? it's so unfair.

Emman Stark (emmanstark) | 13 comments hahaha i did not throw the book. But I almost throw it out of the window. I put it aside and went to the ref to get a gallon of ice cream. I was so shocked that i wasnt in my senses the next day hahaha

message 13: by Matt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Matt | 6 comments When I read that scene it was the first time that I actually put a book down and was angry. I even complained about it the next day to coworkers (who had no clue what I was going on about). But looking back on it now, I can truly appreciate that GRRM is a genius and I almost forgive him for killing one of my favourite characters.
(I couldn't care less if catelyn lived, but Robb had so much potential)

message 14: by Lily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lily (elderstargirl) ***SPOILER***

I agree with "keep reading". I was so devastated at the whole thing and then when I thought Arya died too, I had to take a break and go rant to my friend about it for a while. She told me to keep reading, and I was so glad I did, LOL The biggest relief I have felt since reading these books was when I saw that she lived.

I was also really upset about what they did to Grey Wind. :( Stupid Robb, he should have paid more attention to his wolf than his stupid bride.

Some men have the tendency to lead with the wrong head.

In another book in the series, I had a friend who told me she DID throw the book across the room...

Natalie Febres | 46 comments LOL. What most people hate about these books is exactly what I love because it's so realistic. Life sucks a LOT sometimes and is almost NEVER fair and the good guys almost ALWAYS get the short end of the stick or dead, but you keep going because it's the right thing to do.

message 18: by Colin (new)

Colin Witkowski | 1 comments RE: throwing the book and wondering what kind of masochist Martin truly is. Book 2, the misdirection regarding Bran and Rickon had me dumbstruck. I just kept saying Hodor for the rest of the day.

ps. I'm just about to finish Book 3 so go easy on me.

pps. FIRST POST

Or there's also the revelation that there are no really good guys, just perspectives, and flawed people whose cause you favour:)

Jeannine (ninigotmac) | 1 comments I just finished Book 3 and was really upset, especially about Arya at the time. Robb didn't bother me as much just because I never felt as connected to him through a POV. At times I felt like giving up on reading the rest of the series.

I have to say, though, the last of each character's chapters in this book has almost made up for it - every single one was either incredibly suspenseful or just really exciting - and now I am looking forward to reading AFFC!

Natalie Febres | 46 comments @Woolfie I guess I'm a jaded, yet stubbornly persistent, idealist.

message 22: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) @Natalie, being an idealist is quite natural and admirable, I'm sure many of us here have our 'good guys' we want to see triumph:)

It's such a roller coaster, but now that I've finished all the books I have yet to find another series as exhilarating.

message 24: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) @Nelly I think most of us, if not all of us here are experiencing the same 'withdrawal symptoms'!

Macky | 7 comments ****SPOILERS****

I just finished book three, and I just need to ask those who have finished it; did Lady Lysa Tully/Arryn killed her husband Jon Arryn influenced by Littlefinger? is that what it meant on the last chapter of Sansa's POV?

Correct! Lysa is mad girl totally obsessed with Petyr Baelish

Yeah, for me that was one of the wow moments! I knew she was mental and all, but I didn't expect for her to be her husbands killer.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments Yep, and I don't really feel sorry for Lyssa.

Nicole (chaitea2) | 81 comments I have become so influenced by the TV show. (I watched it after I read all the books.) The actress who plays Lysa is especially irritating (in a totally effective way). After I watched her on the show, I completely despised her!

message 30: by Ross (last edited Nov 28, 2011 04:59PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Yeah I felt slightly sorry for Lysa, she was deluded poor thing, but she really didn't help her case much, in her own way she was something of a Mad King Aerys, she wasn't exactly cruel, not to that extreme but she was fickle, unreliable, and had no thought for anyone else in the whole of Westeros than her spoiled son,but then again she probably thought she was being a good mother so I can't really fault her for being warped by love.

Nelly I share your sentiments, I'd never seen her before, and then at the same time as GoT, I watched The Pillars of the Earth miniseries and there she was again! Also I keep seeing the actor who plays Tywin in every other fantasy film or series, he's in Your Highness and Ironclad as well!

Macky | 7 comments Oh my..that made it more so complicated when you think of it.It was the mystery that made Ned to investigate Jon Arryn's death when he was the hand of the King; when he also had thoughts that it was the Lannisters who did it, but making sure first to find proof and real evidence. Lady Catelyn is also convinced that the Lannisters plotted to kill her sister's husband.

Things do not seem what they seem..

message 32: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Or as Martin would put it 'words are wind' even those written on the page!

Jumana I'm in the middle of book 3, but I just had to break off to comment how irritating it is that people who are supposed to be dead keep turning up alive. It makes me think about real life history, people who showed up claiming to be dead kings/ lords were always dismissed as frauds and not taken seriously, how come in the books no-one has doubts?

message 34: by Ross (last edited Nov 29, 2011 07:26AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Hmm well probably because they are so eager to believe they are alive or, since most of the deaths are hearsay, perhaps each reported death is not given the full credibility it would otherwise have gotten, especially when you didn't want to believe the rumours or tidings of death in the first place.

Also investigation or accurate investigation was not a big thing in those days:)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I have a question. I have a friend who is reading the series and he asked if Stannis was dead by this point and I thought he was. I was just getting a second opinion.

message 36: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well we don't know for sure that he is dead, only what Ramsay claims in the letter. It's a good bet he might still be alive, since we currently know nothing about the confrontation with the Bastard's Men

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I guess we will see.

Daniel Reyes (dadrocant) | 4 comments This was definitely one of the hardest parts in the series for me to read. So much so that when I got ADWD and started to realize I had to reread the entire series before, I really didn't feel emotionally ready to do so, and still don't.

message 39: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well there's always A Wiki of Ice and Fire and sites like that that'd get you up to speed, if you're not too picky that is.

Daniel Reyes (dadrocant) | 4 comments I know, and believe me that is what I ended up resorting to. I hope to get around to ADWD this holiday season

message 41: by Ross (last edited Dec 01, 2011 04:20PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well it ought to provide you with a long, fulfilling, if also frustratingly head-scratching read, enjoy! Or endure, as you will!

message 43: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Careful, they're rather gamy.

message 44: by Stangmark (new)

Stangmark | 22 comments Ornella wrote: "why do good guys die in these books? it's so unfair."

because these books are less a fantasy fiction epic and more an epic history of a fantasy fiction world.

message 45: by Ross (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well put Stangmark.

message 46: by Stangmark (new)

Stangmark | 22 comments although your unlikely to find it as exhilarating, the epic (18 books so far) Malazan Series by Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont should keep you well sated as you wait on book 6.
the book of swords/empire of the east by saberhagen is pretty good.
and, often over-looked, there are the three dunk and egg novellas; set prior to a song of fire and ice but in the same world.

Heidi | 4 comments Colin wrote: "RE: throwing the book and wondering what kind of masochist Martin truly is. Book 2, the misdirection regarding Bran and Rickon had me dumbstruck. I just kept saying Hodor for the rest of the day...."

I can't stop laughing about "I just kept saying Hodor for the rest of the day." I just read the part about the Red Wedding and Arya, and I feel exactly the same way. Thanks to those who provided encouragement to keep going!

message 48: by Natalia (last edited Aug 19, 2012 11:37PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Natalia (small_god) *MORE SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3*

I knew something was wrong with the wedding - Robb's direwolf made me think that something bad was going to happen, but I did not believe in Aria's dead.
But I was really upset when she left Sandor! I like him and they were an adorable couple.

Derek Benton (derekbenton) | 1 comments I've never been so angry at a book that I threw it across the room, but I did after the red wedding chapter. then I ran to go get it and then threw it across the room again.

Sonja | 22 comments Angry and upset at the red wedding, tbh it's the dire wolf I have most sympathy for :-(
