Hello and welcome!

I decided to start this group because, as a recent graduate of a diploma in publishing and editing, I wondered how I could make contact with authors who need editorial services. Surely there are budding authors out there wanting the services of an editor? And surely I am not the only proofreader / editor with my heart set on a book industry career?

I had difficulty finding a forum on the Internet that offered a place for authors and editors to connect and realised Goodreads would be the perfect environment for such a group.

So if you need an editor for your manuscript or you're an editor looking for book industry experience, or simply want some advice on either area - tell us about yourself!

Sunny Deuber (SunnyDee) | 1 comments Hi Haley,

It looks like I picked just the right time to get involved again in Goodreads. I'm a self-published author (my memoir, Living on the Sunny Side, earned gold in the 1st Annual eLit Awards). I also started my own indy publishing/editing/manuscript formatting business--which is definitely in need of some promotion!

And after struggling with effectively editing my own manuscripts, I'll no doubt need "fresh eyes" for close inspections of my current and future work.

My company, PleasantValleyPress.net is a one-woman shop, offering editing, critiques/evaluations of new manuscripts, interior formatting for both print and ebooks, and a very limited amount of publishing.

I keep my prices as low as possible, since what led me to start my own company was the fact that I have been labeled as "overqualified" (which usually means too expensive!) and therefore unable to work, especially in today's economy. It was definitely time to get creative!

For those in a similar position, writing may be the only way to get anywhere. For most of us, money is very tight. Therefore, I try hard to be fair and keep my prices low.

I'm happy to respond to inquiries, give honest evaluations, and do what I can to help new writers, both with modest prices and with advice/recommendations.

I wish you success both in your career and with this much-needed group.

Sunny

Pavarti Tyler (pavartiktyler) | 1 comments What a wonderful idea. I'm a writer and even though I am self publishing I would NEVER send anything to print without using a professional editor to go through it. I have a great editor for Two Moons of Sera and am working with another for Shadow on the Wall. I encourage every author I meet to find an editor they trust to work with.

I do editing as well, although I bid myself a content editor. I am a trained dramaturge and bring a unique approach to editing which many forget. I work for SNM Horror as their Novella Editor, Novel Publicity as a publicist, and have my own publishing company: www.fightingmonkeypress.com

Laekan Kemp (laekanzeakemp) Hey everyone! I'm thinking about self-publishing my first book soon and I'm just wondering how much a quality editor would cost? I've had my manuscript edited for grammar but I'd like more in-depth editing done on the piece in terms of plot, language, characters, etc. I wouldn't mind working with someone who is new to the editing business, especially if we could work out a deal that would lower the overall cost and provide exposure for the both of us. If there are any editors out there who may be interested please send me a message! Thanks!

message 21: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 8 comments Hello, my name is Hannah. I am a college graduate looking for work as an editor. I have many years of experience, having volunteered beginning in my freshman year as a peer editor in my university's academic support center.
I graduated with a degree in English Literature and a minor in German. The intense work in both of these fields made me into a better reader and a better English speaker. After years of extremely close reading and analysis for my major and essentially re-learning English on a higher grammatical level in order to understand the grammatical laws of German, I have garnered all of the necessary skills to be an excellent editor. I am also an avid reader. Most importantly, however, I love to edit.
While I believe I am very good at what I do, I have not had any paid experience doing this kind of work. So if you're willing to take a chance on newby, look no further.
I offer a wide variety of editing services, from copyediting to fact checking and beyond. Though prices vary slightly for each kind of work, my rates are always very affordable.
If you are interested or have any further questions, please send me a private message, and I would be happy to start helping you with your newest masterpiece!

Derbhile Graham (writerlyderv) | 1 comments Hi. My name is Derbhile. I've been enthusiastically editing for self published authors for the last couple of years and would love to do more. I've edited a few business books, but I'm particularly interested in working with fiction authors, ad I am one myself.

I will take a scalpel rather than a wrecking ball to your your book, removing the dead wood so the prize blooms will shine. In other words, I'll cut down your book without getting rid of anything that makes it great. I'll also proofread and smooth out clunky sentences and inconsistencies.

Visit www.writewordseditorial.ie to find out more.
