Urban Fantasy discussion
What are you reading?
Finished
, moved right into and finished
. Then I was in the mood for some military science fiction so I also finished the first two books in The Lost Fleet series:
and
. Now moving into
.
I finished
which was great. I am now reading
which is very confusing right now with unfamiliar terms and a strange world.
Finished The Red Pyramid yesterday. Started The Siren and the Sword. Moving from Childrens/YA to Erotica is a bit weird, I know.
Hi MadameZelda,The Kate Daniels series (Magic Bites) you mentioned was a similar experience for me. A bit harder to get into at first. I stopped reading after maybe the third novel? However, I went back to the series later and I am SO glad I did. It just got better and better. Ended up being one in my top favorite series list. Just an encouragement to stick with it. I'm glad I did.
Finished
and decided I was ready for a drastic change in setting so I started
last night. So far, so good.
Finished
and am now reading an even weirder book (another one!)
. At this point I prefer Magic Bites over A Demon and His Witch.
I read The Milk of Birds, which is one of the better books I've read this year. I started Talulla Rising, but 38 pages in my sister sent me the new Outlander book Written in My Own Heart's Blood, and it's sooo hard to tear myself away from it!
Finished
and liked it enough that I want to read #2 in the series. Until I can get my hands on it however, I've started
.

Finished
and am moving on to the second book in the Thieftaker Chronicles,
, for a little more witchery in colonial America.
I'm reading Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig right now. Just finished The Siren and the Sword by Cecilia Tan and before that was The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. Trying to finish Blackbirds and Lord of the Flies by William Golding before September starts and a whole new set of group reads begin.
Right now, I'm working on 3 books:
, the 3rd Temperence Brennan (Bones) book on Kindle,
, on audiobook when commuting, andDangerous Women - an anthology edited by Gardner Dozois & George R. R. Martin (sorry, couldn't find a book cover in Goodreads...)
How are you liking the Bones books? I have them but I haven't started. I love the show but I don't know if the books are any good.
I'm holding off reading
because as long as I haven't read it, it's not really over yet. But I'm also re-reading the last few books to get me 100% back in a Hollows mindspace before I get to the final book. I've finished with Pale Demon and am now into A Perfect Blood. I'm also going to her author signing in Houston on October 28th (joint signing with Ilona Andrews).
Nicqui wrote: "How are you liking the Bones books? I have them but I haven't started. I love the show but I don't know if the books are any good."I'm enjoying them so far. They are quite different from the TV show (as you would expect). I have to occasionally either look up internet translaations when the French phrases are not translated for us, but those are few and minor inconveniences. Good so far.
Nicqui wrote: "Brilliant. I'll try to bump the first one up my to-read list."The tv series is only based upon the books; they are quite different, but good imho. After all, some producer somewhere thought enough of them to make it into a long-running series. Enjoy.

That's a pretty good one. I think I want to keep reading in that series.
I'm onto a new series starting with
. So far, it's pretty good. It's got that hardboiled detective vibe.

I am reading Book 4 of the Deadwood series which is in amazon, but not in goodreads, by Ann Charles, An Ex to Grind in Deadwood. Ghosts come to see the heroine who solves murders, etc.
Daemons Are Forever
and I'm not liking hist style at all. I read the first book okay, and it was kind of charming, but this just feels amateurish. The funny thing is, his other series
is completely different in tone. Also reading Beyond the Highland Mist
which I'm ALSO not liking very much. It's very different from her Fever series. My niece, Jody Kessler, kindly gave sent me a copy of the second book in the series that began with Death Lies Between Us
which I'm reading, too. The second book is not quite out yet.

Just finished the second in Jim Butcher Dresden series. These are so much fun."
I have one of those on my Kindle. I keep meaning to read it. I've heard really good things about that author.

I just finished
And it was freakin' amazing. Read it with a box of tissues though. But since that isn't actually uf I'll balance it out with
which is a uf title and was a really good read too. Even though there is the 2 men and 1 heroine trap in there it didn't exactly read as a love-triangle. The romance isn't even that big a part of the story actually. But I liked it and will quite possibly read the next in the series, just not right after the last. Now what to read next?

I haven't read the second one yet but the first one was excellent.

I really enjoy the Dresden books. Looking forward to the next one!

Yeah--I have some things I don't love about the books but they're fun and I like the details he gives about magic and the way it works in his world.

I hear that they get better as you go along, particularly at book four. I must have read it in a thread somewhere.
Just finished Discount Armageddon. It was okay, just lacking in so many ways for me. Getting ready to start Havoc. I enjoyed the first one in this series.
Currently reading Beautiful Darkness waiting to get the 3rd Outlander novel and then its Kim Harrions final Hollows book waaaaaaahhh!
I am currently reading
and am enjoying it so far.... next I got
lying on my shelf waiting to be continued. Aaaand I am still struggling with finishing
. I read the first 100 pages quite fast but somehow I stopped. I guess I have to read the pages again to get what's going on. Okay - not really urban fantasy at all.Just dystopian but I can't find a good fantasy book that i am interested in at the moment.
Finished
, still processing the end of an era. Now I've switched gears and am trying a historical romance (my first!),
.
My last book was Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith
, which I really, really liked.Currently reading Lexicon by Max Barry
which has a great science fictional magic system, and I'm liking it a lot.I've got to read
and
by the end of the month for a challenge.

I liked Landline and I think plenty of others will like it too. Did it change my life? No, but it was fun while I read it. You know the premise is that the main character is able to go back in time and talk with her then boyfriend --now husband-- on a landline in the bedroom she grew up in. That time slippage aspect was very cool.
Since The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap, I've read Seven Wild Sisters: A Modern Fairy Tale, the short stories Yellow Dog and Dog Boys, also by Charles de Lint, I Am Not a Cop!, which was meh, for me and Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock which I liked.
Now I'm reading Death Comes for the Archbishop for my RL book club.
