Amber (unchangeling) | 23 comments I went to your book blog and your review of Seven Kinds of Hell seemed personal, and animated, helpful and fair. Keep at it and you're sure to find more followers for it.

I did notice on the book review request page it says:

Now, with encouragement from various authors and editors, I am not paying true attention to my reviewing and editing.

I was a little confused and wondered if the 'I am not' was supposed to be 'I am now'?

Amber (unchangeling) | 23 comments I'm re-reading Douglas Adams' second series. First, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which is so much fun, both in the prose and in the story, and the sequel, The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, also an absurdly fun romp. There's an excerpt from what he'd written of the third novel before he died in the compilation, A Salmon of Doubt, that is a total blast as well.

Nick | 100 comments I've just started The Wolf in Winter (Charlie Parker, #12) by John Connolly

It's the latest in the "Charlie Parker" series - modern noir detective but with a supernatural edge. Very creepy and gritty but shot through with snippets of dark humour.

I worked my way through the series last year. Like any series, you have some books that are better than other, but overall I like them. I will warn you to be prepared for very tortured heroes. Some of the books are hard to read, and to cleanse your mind you need something light and fluffy to read after.

If you like audio books, the narrators are good, that is how I read the series.

I don't think this series is one to read back to back, but if you can do one then read a couple of different ones, then go back to them, it works.

I'm continuing on with Mercy Thompson... Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs

message 2513: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments Alien in the House (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #7) by Gini Koch was a good read, I just wish the books in this series weren't so unnecessarily long. Kind of like The Midnight Mayor (Matthew Swift, #2) by Kate Griffin . I finally made it back to that series after well over a year, and now I remember why I took a break. I love the author's writing style, as it's very poetic at times, but there's just so darn much of it. But I did like it and moved right on to The Neon Court (Matthew Swift, #3) by Kate Griffin

In audio, I'm revisiting The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa and The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden, #2) by Julie Kagawa to refresh my memory of the many things I have apparently forgotten.

I read the first book in the Chicagoland Vampires series and found Her best friend and her best friends boyfriend to be really annoying and gag worthy. Then when I started the next book it seemed like they came right up within the first chapter. Should I continue? Are they in the story a lot? because I can't stand them.

Trying my best to read Destined for an Early Grave and I own almost all of them though I don't think Paranormal Romance is my thing. I find myself rolling my eyes all the time like oh their fussing again? oh hot vampire sex again awesome ( sarcasm).

Did you read the first three already? I loved the first three, but found the rest of the series to be meh. And I like PNR. But if it's not working for you, I definitely wouldn't force yourself through the rest of the series. The dangers of buying a whole series before you read them. That happened to me several times before I finally learned my lesson.

message 2522: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I listened to The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa and The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden, #2) by Julie Kagawa for a refresher. I was fine with The Immortal Rules and remember most of the plot. But with The Eternity Cure, I feel like I remember only about 10 percent of that book. How on earth did I forget so many important details from that story? Where was my head the first time around? I guess it's fortunate I decided on a reread.

Now I'm listening to Morgue Drawer Four (Morgue Drawer, #1) by Jutta Profijt . It's entertaining, but I'm not far enough to decide if I really like it or not.

Also reading Blue-Blooded Vamp (Sabina Kane, #5) by Jaye Wells . Sabina is really annoying me, as usual, but I will finally finish this series!

This is one of my favorite series, but I understand it's not for everyone. I agree with Christine about not forcing yourself to finish. They are all along the same lines, so if you're not enjoying them now, you might not the later books. The first two were my favorite in the series, by far, but I am enjoying this last one a lot.

message 2524: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 188 comments I liked the first three though I began to get a little annoyed with the two main characters by the end of the third one. I'm in the middle of the fourth and I own everyone except for the newest one. I also kinda got p'd off when I realized there were going to be more after I bought the "last" one.

I really don't like when they draw out a series... :: cough cough:: The Mortal Instruments.

Christine | 752 comments I've listened to Morgue Drawer Four (Morgue Drawer, #1) by Jutta Profijt and am currently listening to Morgue Drawer Next Door (Morgue Drawer, #2) by Jutta Profijt and I've really enjoyed them despite myself. There is nothing new to the concept and the main character, Pasha, is so obnoxious that I can understand why a lot of reviewers don't like him. But I find him quite entertaining in general. Of course, the audio narrated by MacLeod Andrews (who narrates Sandman Slim) probably helps a lot.

In print, I'm reading Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, #1) by Danielle Paige which is interesting. It's not quite as captivating as I had hoped, but pretty good so far.

message 2533: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk I finished Odd Thomas Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz and it was very good. Now, I'm going to start re-reading the Secret McQueen series by Sierra Dean, as books 7 & 8 are being released this year. I've read the first four books. The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters (Secret McQueen, #0.5) by Sierra Dean is first.

Christine | 752 comments Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, #1) by Danielle Paige was an interesting twist to Oz.

I listened to The Devil You Know (Felix Castor, #1) by Mike Carey and I really enjoyed it. I like the main characters often dry sense of humor and the narrator's delivery was near perfect.

Now I'm trying Monster in My Closet (Monster Haven, #1) by R.L. Naquin . It seems pretty entertaining so far.

Of Butterflies & Books Right now I'm reading Three Parts Dead (Craft Sequence #1) by Max Gladstone . This so far has interesting moments, but I'm not sure that I love it. It makes me feel like I'm missing a part of the story or that there is supposed to be something that I should have read before this, but I'm gonna try and stick with it. I'm also re-reading one of, if not my favorite book, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen .

I tried reading Wicked a few years ago and I didn't get very far. I was so upset about how this poor child was being treated that I wasn't enjoying the book at all and had to set it aside for a while. "A while" has apparently turned into forever. I still cringe whenever I think about it.

Christine | 752 comments I have been wrapping up more series lately. I listened to How to Run with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #3) by Molly Harper and I'm starting to think that I should listen to the first in her Naked Werewolf series. I read it in print years ago and just don't remember loving it as much as I've love the audiobooks of Jane Jameson and the other two Naked Werewolf books. Maybe there's some special magic to Amanda Ronconi's narration?
Morgue Drawer for Rent by Jutta Profijt was not nearly as obnoxiously entertaining as the first two books in the series, which made the obvious nature of the mystery all that harder to take.

And finally The Minority Council (Matthew Swift, #4) by Kate Griffin . Such a long book from a series of long books, but I do love this author's writing style and her creativity.

I'm trying to resist the urge to start shiny new series so up next I'm listening to Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh for a review before reading Shield of Winter (Psy-Changeling, #13) by Nalini Singh And in print I think I'm going to start Sixth Grave on the Edge (Charley Davidson, #6) by Darynda Jones . I didn't enjoy the last two Charley Davidson books that much so I'm hoping book 6 will be better for me.

I hope Molly Harper continues to write Halfmoon Hollow and Naked Werewolf books just so I can have Amanda Ronconi read them to me. I don't think I've ever laughed so much during a book as I do during her readings of these series. It's one of those times where I think that the right narrator really helps make the book.
