I love the Urban Shaman series. I hope you give it at least another book or two before you decide. I am not sure I was sold on it from the first book but really grew to love the series as I read more.

message 2262: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments The last really good UF I read was over a month ago. It was The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black .

If you read sf/ dystopian try Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey . Refreshingly, it's not necessarily YA.

Finished The Real Boy by Anne Ursu The Real Boy by Anne Ursu today. It's fantasy with an autistic- like main character. It's well- worth reading.

Starting The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff .

Hey, me too! I'm playing catching with the last three. I've finished Kitty Steals the Show (Kitty Norville #10) by Carrie Vaughn , am almost done with Kitty Rocks the House (Kitty Norville, #11) by Carrie Vaughn and will start Kitty in the Underworld (Kitty Norville, #12) by Carrie Vaughn next.

In audio, I recently listened to Nine Princes in Amber (Amber Chronicles, #1) by Roger Zelazny which I enjoyed quite a bit. Now I'm listening to Death Warmed Over (Dan Shamble, Zombie PI, #1) by Kevin J. Anderson which has it's clever, entertaining moments, but it's otherwise just 'okay'.

message 2264: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) finally finished Bastial Energy (The Rhythm of Rivalry, #1) by B.T. Narro only took me FOREVER to read. pretty good book though, im really looking forward to the next book - The Sartious Mage - see where things go next.

my friend lent me Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, #1) by Robin Hobb and is pretty adamant that i read it ASAP. lol. its one of her all time fave series. hopefully i enjoy it otherwise who knows what will happen!!

I've been wondering about the Wool series. Is it dark? (I prefer my dystopians bleak and gritty!)

I've heard good and bad about the Wool series. I have book 1 on my Kindle, but haven't read it yet. It seems to be either people love it or hate it.

Yes, it does seem to be one of those books. But so many people are reading it that it makes me curious. I'm interested in any writing that always a reaction, good or bad, out of people. I'll check it out.

Julia | 615 comments Thomas asked: I've been wondering about the Wool series. Is it dark?

Depending on how dark you like your dystopias, Thomas, it may not work for you. Sometimes it reads like a mystery, sometimes a thriller, sometimes a romance; it is many things.

Wool Omnibus is five interrelated novellas. The first isn't a lot like the others. I suggest one tries it for oneself.

This weekend I put aside Soon I Will Be Invincible, finished Twelve Years a Slave and also read Everybody Sees the Ants. Not sure if I'll read Gunmetal Magic or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings next.

Christine | 752 comments I'm reading The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1) by Alexandra Bracken and I'm really enjoying it. I guess it's considered YA dystopian, although we're only a few years into the breakdown of society rather than generations into it like in many other series.

message 2282: by Scott (new)

Scott | 18 comments I'm currently reading Theft of Swords and Beyond the Shadowsand thoroughly enjoying both. Just finished The Lies of Locke Lamoraand this was quite good as well. As for more modern urban fantasy, 2 I plan to read next areAloha from Helland The Blue Blazes

Veronica (readingonthefly) That's a good list, Scott. Those are all on my TBR list.

I just finished Disappearing Nightly (Esther Diamond, #1) by Laura Resnick and Doppelgangster (Esther Diamond, #2) by Laura Resnick . Not sure if I will go right into the third book in the series or read something I already own.

I love Sandman Slim. I listened to them all on audio and the narrator is just perfect for the role.

message 2286: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I finished The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1) by Alexandra Bracken which was really good and I was sucked in by the story and the characters. And the ending was heart wrenching.

Now I'm trying to finish up Kitty in the Underworld (Kitty Norville, #12) by Carrie Vaughn and doing a buddy read of Strangers in Death (In Death, #26) by J.D. Robb before I let myself start Never Fade (The Darkest Minds, #2) by Alexandra Bracken

Julia | 615 comments Christmas I finished Mistress of the Art of Death (Mistress of the Art of Death, #1) by Ariana Franklin , which is a delightful historical mystery. Then I read Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler , which you maybe have to be from Maine to get. Then I read half of The Fifty Year Sword by Mark Z. Danielewski , which was too much. Now I'm loving mostly Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese , which is set at a mission hospital in Ethiopia. I'm looking forward to reading Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause , Tandem (Many-Worlds, #1) by Anna Jarzab , Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein and others.
