Courtney | 6 comments I just started Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews and am about a quarter done, so far I'm really enjoying getting back into Kate's world. next I plan on reading Fifth Grave Past the Light (Charley Davidson, #5) by Darynda Jones and A Cursed Embrace A Weird Girls Novel by Cecy Robson .

(cheshire_red) read Mortal Engines (The Hungry City Chronicles, #1) by Philip Reeve In the Flesh by Portia Da Costa in the last couple of days, now reading The Iron Wyrm Affair (Bannon & Clare, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow , so far not as good as I was hoping, but not bad.

I just couldn't finish reading the Iron Wyrm Affair. I tried, oh how I tried. I can't put my finger on it precisely, but that book just didn't do anything for me.

Marsha | 114 comments Currently reading This Case Is Gonna Kill Me (Linnet Ellery #1) by Phillipa Bornikova . Very different from most other urban fantasy books in that the heroine isn't all bad-ass and "able". She's actually quite "normal" - whatever that means:)

I read that one a while ago and loved it. Like you said it was different, a good thing. The next book came out today, I'm looking forward to it.

I ended up doing a lot of skimming by the last third of the book. The book didn't work for me either.

I just finished Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh and am deciding if I liked it enough to move on to the second book in the series or read something else entirely.

yea I was so disappointed with it, I really like Lilth's Kismet series, but this one just wasn't as good, and I don't think it had anything to do with the characters.... just sometimes it was really confusing the way she wrote things and other times she made up names for certain things but didn't tell you what it meant and u goy had to kind of guess.... know what I mean?

I have Babayaga by Toby Barlow out from the library. The author's previous book Sharp Teeth told in blank verse for adults, is about werewolves in LA who are also lawyers and professional card players, is so amazing that I had to get the book about the Russian witch.

Isn't Daughter of Smoke and Bone wonderful Julia? Knowing your tastes I am fairy sure you'll like it as well as the sequel Days of Blood & Starlight but we'll have to wait until next year I believe for the third bookDreams of Gods & Monsters

I am just curious as to why you swore not to read Jim Butcher ?as he is immensely popular in this group?

I myself have only read the first 3 Dresden books, and am in no hurry to read the next. I find the violence very intense, and also get tired of all the fighting particularly the 3rd one.I felt bad after reading them. I do like the Harry Dresden character, so will probably read on sometime.

I loved DoS&B while it was in Prague and Marrakesh. When it moved to Eretz, in the last hundred pages I had problems with it, and I'm not rushing to get #2...

I've read the first two of that series. While I enjoyed the basic story, the main character never really acted the way I would expect a trained assassin to act. She kept telling me she was trained from a young age to be an assassin, but she never really showed me. She just wasn't as ruthless and on her game as I thought she'd be.

As assassins go, Gin Blanco from Elemental Assassin is much more believable in the role.

message 2031: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) Christine, that was exactly my issue with Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, #1) by Jaye Wells as well.

I'm currently reading book three in The Noble Dead series, Sister of the Dead (Noble Dead, Series 1, #3) by Barb Hendee , which is more fantasy/high fantasy.

Are you ready for not so usual answer? (:

"he is immensely popular in this group?" is the answer. I stay away from popular writers as much as I can. I chose less popular (or new) author over the popular one every time.

The only exceptions (in my case) are Kate Morton, Karen Marie Moning (as long as she´s writing Fever) and Neil Gaiman.

message 2035: by chucklesthescot (new)

message 2041: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I think I've neglected to post to here for a while! Let's see.... I read Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews which was awesome. As was Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne

Bill The Vampire (The Tome of Bill, #1) by Rick Gualtieri was a little to cliche geeks with frat boy humor for me, but did show a little potential.

In the House of the Wicked (Remy Chandler, #5) by Thomas E. Sniegoski was another solid addition to the series.

Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch was great and I love the narrator of the audio. I'm glad I finally got around to checking this series out.

And finally I'm enjoying some time in the obnoxious, snarky gutter with Sandman Slim. Aloha from Hell (Sandman Slim, #3) by Richard Kadrey wasn't as good as books 1 & 2 for me, but I'm halfway through Devil Said Bang (Sandman Slim, #4) by Richard Kadrey and loving it.

Sullivan (promising start), and Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon (one of my best friends loves this series, so I thought I should give it a try).
