Good! I didn't care for book two quite as much as #1, but #3 was excellent.

It seems like lately a lot of e-books are crazy spendy, often more than a HC.

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Darcy wrote: "It seems like lately a lot of e-books are crazy spendy, often more than a HC."

I'm willing (not happy, but willing) to spend as much for the eBook version of a new book in a series I'm following as I would for the paper version. If it's something I bought pre-Kindle, I will pay the same price as the paper version of that book if I have to.

I'm not willing to spend more for an eBook than I would buying a paper book.

It is. It's pretty mature writing for a YA series.

I was pretty surprised by some of the stuff in there as well! It's definitely YA, but edgier than most YA imho.

Kathy (Kindle-aholic) (kindleaholic) | 192 comments Read Midnight Riot, Three Parts Dead & Sealed With a Curse. Liked all 3.

Daughter of the Sword (Fated Blades, #1) by Steve Bein or The Inexplicables (The Clockwork Century, #5) by Cherie Priest will be next.

Yes, I agree with you Christine, I'm currently re-reading Taken by Storm (Raised by Wolves, #3) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes wondering or guessing that book 4 will be released next year even though there is no mention of it on GR or her website. I can't wait, I want Bryn to have love.

Kathy (Kindle-aholic) (kindleaholic) | 192 comments Matthew wrote: "Wow, the premise of the Inexplicables sounds awesome. Would you recommend the series?"

I really like it. It's very fast-paced, lots of action. Reminds me of a modern dime novel. Steampunk & the American West go very well together, I think. :)

This series gets called YA (mostly the first book), but while I think it is very accessible for younger readers, it is not YA. In YA you don't have lead characters in their late 30s/40s.

message 1335: by Matthew (new)

Christine | 752 comments I just finished Speaker for the Dead (Ender's Saga, #2) by Orson Scott Card . It has a totally different feel than Ender's Game, and while they are part of the same "series" it seems somehow unfair to compare them to one another. I loved them each in their own, totally different way.

I keep wanting to read that because I loved Ender's Game. My son loved EG, but he hated Speaker for the dead.

I'm once again turning from UF/PNR to read

The Redbreast by Jo Nesbø .

I'm with your son ... I loved Ender's Game ... and liked Ender's Shadow as well, though it was written much later, but in the same time frame and the same 'style'.

I got through Speaker for the Dead but didn't manage to finish the one after that. Just didn't care for where it went, actually, after Ender's Game.

I can see why a lot of people don't like Speaker for the Dead. It has a completely different tone for starters. And it's hard to tell it's a sci-fi work but for the occasional talk of space travel and some of their gadgets. At times, it becomes very philosophical, and at moments is almost downright preachy. Kind of the heavy-handed version of Ender's Game. It's neither "light-hearted" nor "fun". But I enjoy books like that when I'm in the right frame of mind, so I was able to appreciate what I think the author was trying to do with Speaker and I look forward to giving Xenocide a try. When I'm in the right frame of mind.

What I'm really excited about is the Ender's Game movie that's supposed to be out next year!! Ben Kingsley as Mazar Rackham and Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff!

Yes! I'm looking forward to that too. Although, I'm a little nervous, lol. I think it could either be amazing or terrible! And I would be so disappointed if it turns out bad. :(

message 1345: by Louise (new)

Louise | 11 comments Just read Elizabeth Hunter's elemental earth series. Really enjoyed the first three - the fourth one - which I doubt will be the last - she switches focus away on to other characters which is always a little risky. If you like your vampires less steroetyped, this is a good series.

message 1346: by Ashley Marie (new)

message 1347: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Bryant (mattbryantdfw) Just finished up The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Oz, #1) by L. Frank Baum . A bit childish, but I've always wanted to read it for myself. Simple and brilliant, much like the Wizard himself! Heading to the library with my kids later to see if they have any of the others in the series. If not, going to get started on Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) by Cherie Priest
