I loved the first two books and multiple people have told me that book three is even better. I haven't been so excited over a series in a very long time. I love everything about it.

I really enjoy that series. I don't mind the multiple POV's because it's easy to keep everyone separate. Sometimes, it's nice to read a 3rd person POV instead of 1st person.

Downside ghosts is also a good series. I love the setting of those books.

It's one of those books that I feel like I've always heard about, but just never made the time to read. I'm so glad I finally did. And the audio version I listened to included commentary from Orson Scott Card talking about the how the novel evolved from a short story. He was writing Speaker for the Dead and just couldn't get that book to work unless he first expanded the Ender's Game short story into a full length novel. It was very interesting to hear about the history of the book and what the book meant to him.

I was so excited to find out there is a movie coming out next year. I can't wait to see how they handle some of the scenes. In the audiobook, the author talked about the struggle to find someone to make it with his stipulation that Ender not be portrayed any older than 12. I can't wait to see it. Of course, I said that about The Hunger Games and I have yet to see it...

message 1143: by Jean ~ Kindle Queen (new)

Jean ~ Kindle Queen (jkat9) | 208 comments Interesting. I assumed they would change Ender to a teenager.

The Hunger Games was pretty close to the original. My big problem was that maybe 90% of the movie was done with shaky cam. I get nauseous and a headache with that much shaky cam for such a prolonged period of time, so I spent most of the movie staring at the seats in front of me while listening to the movie. I definitely won't bother watching Catching Fire if it's filmed the same way.

message 1144: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments Jean wrote: "Interesting. I assumed they would change Ender to a teenager."

I think Orson Scott Card said he started getting offers to option the book in the 90s, but everyone wanted to make Ender a teenager so it would be a "date movie" which they felt would sell more tickets. But he was adamant that the youth of the characters was vital to the plot. He said that while the kids were all geniuses, it's only such young children that would be so accepting and believing of what the adults around them tell them. He felt teenagers would question things more and it wouldn't work within the story he wrote. It's funny because I never even thought about that, but once he said it, it made total sense. It fascinates me to see just how much thought some authors put into their work.

That would have ruined it. A date movie?! Ugh! It's amazing he resisted though. You'd think he would have done it anyway just for the money, but I'm glad he waited. Plus, I think it will work better now that special effects have progressed so much.

message 1146: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 721 comments Mod
Lol. I can't imagine a stranger date movie than Ender's Game. Although I once had a blind date who took me to see Time Bandits.

I agree about the shaky cam on Hunger Games. I have a low tolerance for that, too. But I loved the movie overall.

message 1147: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Stewart (laurenstewart) | 4 comments I thought they did a great job with the movie for The Hunger Games. They usually screw the story up IMO. I hope they do a good job with Ender's Game.

My brother, who knows the book is one of my all-time favorites, told me about a year ago that they were having open casting calls for boys from 8-12 for the movie.

message 1148: by Jean ~ Kindle Queen (new)

Jean ~ Kindle Queen (jkat9) | 208 comments I didn't think they'd be able to get 6-year-old kids to do the movie, but 8-12 sounds about right. Fingers crossed! It sounds like Orson Scott Card will have lots of input, so hopefully that will mean they'll be fairly faithful to the original.

message 1149: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Stewart (laurenstewart) | 4 comments I've been waiting for the day I can give it to my son to read. Ha. As if it's a rite of passage. :)

message 1150: by Christine (new)

Christine | 752 comments I'm going to have to buy a copy of Ender's Game in print so I can give it to my sons when they are old enough. Plus, I'm kind of curious how reading it will compare to listening to it.
