Julia | 615 comments I am listening to Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher , which I alsmost never do, but I'm loving James Marsters...

I'm reading Alpha & Omega: Call of the Hunt which is all of the Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega novels & short story put together. I'm loving rereading Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs right now and eager for Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs . I don't usually reread a series when a new book comes out so this is fun.

Next up is The Night Circus.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) i just finished Hellforged (Deadtown, #2) by Nancy Holzner , it was pretty good. there was still some parts where Vicky didnt seem very BadAss Demon Killer but the fighting scene's made up for that.
i ended up rating the book 4 stars cause i really liked the ending.

RIN ಠ_ಠ (wriggrin) | 60 comments I'm about halfway into Me Before You by Jojo Moyes .

It was a bit difficult to get into at first because it's really different from my recent reads (paranormal, YA, dystopian). Once I get into the flow, I really enjoy it. I don't know how to put it into words...it's one of those books that is really...touching/moving. Sort of like P.S. I Love You.

Try the audio version if you like audio books. The narrator is awesome and does a great job with the street slang. I've seen a lot of reviews saying it took them most of the first book to get used to the dialect, but it adds so much in audio.

Now I am almost finished and honestly, I have mixed feelings about this series. One hand I like the "Noir" feeling of it, reminiscent of Raymond Chandler's detective novels. I also really like the character Harry Dresden. I find the violence very intense and graphic and also unbelievable. I mean, how could one person get beat up so often and still be alive? I don't think I could read the series straight through without reading something else in-between. I also find the relationship between Dresden and the Murphy character extremely annoying to the point where I don’t enjoy reading about it. I don't want to give any spoilers away, but I am certain everyone who has read this series will know what I am talking about. I have heard this gets better, so I'll keep reading

It does get better. If I recall, the first few books all seemed to follow a basic pattern culminating in Harry being beaten to within an inch of his life, but then suddenly finding that well of strength he needed to beat the bad guys. Like you say, pretty hard to swallow. But as the series progresses Jim Butcher does start to mix things up and introduce other great characters besides Murphy. I've been spacing them out myself. I started the series over a year ago and still have the most recent two to read. The most recent I read was Turn Coat and I felt like he really shook things up with that one.

I have the same issues with the Harry Dresden series. I've heard that it gets "really good" around book 4 or 5. Like you, I've only read the first two books. Everyone raves about this series, so I'm sticking with it. (I totally agree that the relationship between Dresden and Murphy is very annoying.)

I love Ilona Andrews. I've only read her Kate Daniels series for far, but I love it just as much (maybe a teeny tiny bit better?) than Mercy Thompson. But be warned, book 1 of Kate Daniels does not start out all that well. I think the biggest issue is the authors don't do a great job in book one of explaining their world, with it's shifts between tech and magic. But once you do get it, and you meet Curran, the series really takes off. And there is such great development of the characters over the course of the series.

Murphy shows up to different degrees in different books. In a couple of the books he does walk up to the edge of "what if" between them, but then backs away. As the series progresses there are several other supporting characters and you get to focus on Harry's relationships with them, instead of just him and Murphy. I finished book 10 about a month ago and was impressed with the growth in Harry's character since the beginning of the series. Of course, I was also so depressed over some things that happened to two other characters that I still haven't pick up the next one. Plus, in book 6 or 7 he picks up a dog side-kick. Who doesn't love a good dog side-kick?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to keep that in mind when I start reading it.

So you like it a little *better* than Mercy? Wow, that's quite a recommendation! :) I can't wait to start.

I'll also admit to liking the Kate Daniels series a teeny bit better than the Mercy Thompson series. (That's mostly because I wasn't a fan of River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs .) If you can get it, the short story "A Questionable Client" by Ilona Andrews is a prequel to the Kate Daniels series and might be an easier intro to the series than Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews . It's available in a few collections: Magic Graves (Night Huntress, #4.5; Kate Daniels, #0.5) by Jeaniene Frost or Dark and Stormy Nights edited by P.N. Elrod. (Sorry, Goodreads won't let me add that last one.)

Jalilah It is good to know I am not alone regarding the Dresden Files! I am glad both the situation with Lt Murphy and Harry getting beaten up multiple times changes later on!
After Fool Moon felt a need to take a break and read something completely different.
The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen was a perfect choice. Light but not at all superficial, this novel would be in Magical Realism category, not Urban fantasy. There are no vampires or werewolves but definitely a lot of magic.
The Sugar Queen is not a fairy tale re-telling directly, but it definitely has fairy tale elements, in particular of Rapunzel. Twenty-seven-year-old Josey Cirrini spends her life taking care of her demanding and unloving mother, shut up in her upstairs room in a house where no visitors are allowed. Like Rapunzel, she gets an unexpected visitor
coming in through her window who then transforms her life. The surprise ending left me stunned.
I just started The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey

I'm with Jean. Mercy and Kate were tied for first place for a long time, but I felt the most recent Mercy book just wasn't as good as the previous ones. But the most recent Kate book was just as good as the rest, so she moved ahead a tiny bit. We'll see how I feel after the next Mercy book. My favorites shift around after each new release.
