for me the idea that you don't have to be important to make change, any small thing you do can have that ripple effect

I like what Dee stated above, but for the maids to come out at night to tell their story to Skeeter, was I guess the only way they could get involved in the writing of the book. That everyone has problems no matter what your race or background. This was a very moving book, I really liked the book.
