Cw (confusedwombat) Direct Amazon Link (I hope): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Maup...

Original Maupassant Short Stories, all 13 volumes in a single file, with active table of contents - Kindle store £0.70p

So, bearing in mind that I read cornflake boxes, why on earth would I flag up GdM as an "interesting read"?

Quite simply I sometimes have the attention span of a goldfish and just want something to entertain me. I'd love to be cultured and have read an enjoyed Dickens, etc. but I just can not stick with it (to my shame.)

GdM writes wonderful short stories about people. Some of them must have been shocking in their day, lose women; men facing dishonour; that kind of thing. I don't know how he does it, but within a few sentences I have vivid "minds eye" pictures of the characters, the settings.
They feel like Hogarth prints, vignettes of the 1870's with a sharp, poignant sometimes heart wrenching plainness that speaks more eloquently than I can ever do in voicing my praise and recommendation.

I'm afraid I don't know of a way to refund other forum members 1-clicks, but I'll happily pledge to pop £1 in my local Samaritans fund for anyone who does not enjoy some time with M. Maupassant :)

I liked ye olde english, it spiced things up a little

Tom Lichtenberg I love de Maupassant and had this on my 'currently reading' list for months on end - kind of funny that Amazon has the same thing for sale that you can get for free (in kindle and other formats) from Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3090

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I managed to escape him through each of my 18 years at school, so I am not sure whether I will ever read a Maupassant book. Guess I ought to, it's part of my culture... maybe it's more of an interesting read when you are not forced to read it and you don't have to dissect every single theme, character and scene...

message 12: by Cw (new)

Cw (confusedwombat) @Lorraine & Tom: I had never heard of him so it was only a chance click that I picked him up (as Tom says, the free versions, also available free on Amazon).

I guess it's like having to admit of never having heard of Shakespeare, Chaucer, Marx or McDonalds but I never fail to discover hidden shallows :)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I have no idea who the best German classic authors are, so I guess unless it's part of your culture it's ok not to know :)
