Well, we don't actually have any but I created a topic just for this purpose. I went and read here and there and pulled together a list of the most common things said on writing sites/publishing sites. Check it out here and good luck!

Wayne Smallman (waynesmallman) | 22 comments Guys, I'm hoping you'll impart some of your experiences and knowledge. I've written a story by the name of Remembrance, which is just about complete and ready for proofing and editing.

“Remembrance is a mix of horror fantasy, interwoven with the tenuous threads of science fiction, and it has progressed to an advanced developmental stage. It’s a novel I’m actually quite excited about.”

However, it's only the first "Act" of two such stories.

The first is perfectly self contained, but the second "Act" would build on the first, yet be a complete departure from what's taken place in the first.

For me, a story is as long or as short as it needs to be, and I'm loathed to just fatten something out arbitrarily, just to meet a word or page count.

Ordinarily, I'd publish the first as-is (once proofed and edited), but it's only 150 pages of manuscript, and I'm trying to avoid yet another novella for the time being.

So, should I wait while I've written the second act, or just go for it?

Rose (riversideroserevolver) I am officially a Goodreads Author. I have officially self-published a short story. I have officially begun the fulfillment of my dream of being an independent writer.

I am in shock. Kind of. And a little freaked out. Please tell me someone else has felt this way.

Steven Atwood (stevenatwood) Hey all,

Anyone have some good ideas to make a book successful? I have a few ideas, but I could use some ideas that other authors have used.

message 58: by Dana (new)

Dana Rongione (danarongione) | 6 comments I'm still trying to figure that out for myself, Steven. If you discover the secret, let me know, okay? LOL

I hope you're talking about a character in something you're writing? If not, I'd strongly advise against killing someone off ;)

Wayne McNeill (waynemcneill) | 3 comments Hi again. I said earlier I might have some stories to tell or even a wee bit of advice. So here goes. I expect I'm older than a lot of you so you're reading the Old Man of the Mountain! If you're young and love writing, don't give up if nothing happens quickly. It rarely does. I grew up pre-computer, and if your chapbook (a very short stapled booklet) was published, there was no way at all to promote it. It's better now. When my first one came out, the publisher told me to walk into every bookstore in Toronto (that's a lot of bookstores) and ask if they would take a few "on commission" (meaning I'd get a small cut if they sold any). Not one shop took one. One bookshop owner laughed in my face. And now years later I have a book coming out. Stick to it and don't give up too soon.

Wow, that's pretty inspirational! :) I kid. But thanks! I'm in the middle of a Zodiac Fantasy book myself.
