Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments I've read the first part now and it was great. I remember that I tried to read either White Fang or Call of the Wild (can't be sure which) when I was about 10, but didn't get very far. With hindsight I can't say I'm surprised. It's certainly not a children's book, both in content and in style. I imagine I would have needed a dictionary at that age! I did read Black Beauty though at the time, so I wasn't completely defeated on the classic animal stories front.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I started it lst night but quite late (for me - NOT an insomniac!) so I haven't got very far. I'm really impressed by the style though. Modern 'children's books' can be rather pedestrian in their determination not to baffle the little souls with hard words. I don't believe in talking down to children!

message 56: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 02, 2011 02:05AM) (new)

I would never have guessed that this is aimed at children if it hadn't been mentioned on here. I'm about 45% through and getting a bit angry at the mo (don't want to say why cos of spoilers!) It is very well written.

:0)

Edited cos I misguessed how far I'd got with the book!

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I would never have chosen this book were it not for Goodreads as I mainly read crime thrillers, autobiographies and horror stories however I am currently 50% through and finding it difficult to put down.Great choice.

message 59: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It's compulsive, isn't it? I'd have put it in the category of those books I should have read when youg but I missed them. It's not true that you should never go back.

message 60: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I have finished Ulysses as of this morning :o) YAY! so gonna try and finish Madam Bovary on my laptop and i have a paperback to read in work and then i'll get round to White Fang... doesnt seem to be taken other people too long to get through it so hopefully i'll make it for 1st August. Although reading 2 books at once is not good. I keep mixing the stories in my head

message 61: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments p.s. Ingnite the lavender cupcakes are amazing! its a bit weird at first cause i'm not used to eating it but still really good. Put in way less than the recipe said, on your advice, and its still pretty strong!

message 62: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm making lavender scones tomorow morning. 3 years ago (on my retirement) I started the village Cake Club - First Thursday of the month in the village hall. We take turns to make cakes, buns etc. Saves all the guilt of baking and eating it all yourself!

Lavender is a strong flavour but if you use it sparingly it's subtle and really good.

Back on topic - I'm 50% through the book now. It's quite compulsive reading.

message 63: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Still struggling with being called Philip as my name is Sarah, even more reluctant to change it though as When Phil(my husband) gave me my Kindle he also gave me a years use of his Amazon account to purchase books!I too am a compulsive baker,my specialities are carrot cake and an unusual chocolate cake that includes "mashed potato".I am now 70% through the book choice and don't want to finish I am enjoying it so much.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments we just need to remember now that your Sarah named Philip and not Philip called Sarah...

Edit: try and make sense of that!

Well done Jud with Ulysses. Don't know if I even want to start it.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments At this time of year a Chocolate Courgette Cake is a blessing. Like potato and carrot, courgette keeps a cake lovely and moist and in August you can't shift for courgettes if you grow them at all!

As to the topic!(We need a baking thread!) I'm 80-odd % through and have a fair bit to say about it but I'll wait till I've finished and put it on the Spoiler thread so as not to ruin anyone's future enjoyment.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Trust me Audrey, you really dont. Just let it gather dust in the corner

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments Think you might have just persuaded me there Jud. That really didn't take much.Did it?

message 73: by Angela (new)

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments I read this book years ago and at the time I didn't like it as much as Call of the Wild. I'm going to start reading it again tonight - many years on my tastes have changed considerably so I may well enjoy it more now.

Ulysses... Even on my English degree course they let us read Dubliners instead when it came to the James Joyce tutorial...

message 75: by Kerstie (new)

Kerstie | 42 comments finished white fang, im afraid to say wasnt really my kind of book but i did like the fact it was a happy ending. it was a good book but not one i would read again. never really liked the classics.

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments Finished it too. It did make me think. Not something I would have read but glad I did.

message 77: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments It does make you think Audrey, I have always thought of it as one everyone should read but not many people do, guess there are a lot of books like that out there.

Freddiesmum | 137 comments hmmm...I have downloaded this, but I dont feel any 'pull' towards reading it at all .... I will have a go soon but its just not doing it for me, maybe I need to leave it for a few days and try again.

I'm glad there's someone else who feels like this. I have started but cannot get into it at all, will give it another go before the closing date.

message 80: by Angela (new)

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments If this is a childrens book then no wonder they have nightmares!

Actually I think I am enjoying this a little more now than first time around as I can now accept the nastier side of nature, although the descriptions can be rather gruesome. Or is it just my mind that is visualising the scenes a little too realistically?

message 81: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've just started. Its not a book i would have been interested in normally, only reading because its this months read. No idea whats going to happen so looking forward to it. Have already realised my expectations were wrong and only in chapter 2

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm afraid life has been so busy lately that I've only managed to get about 70% read. I'm going to try to get it finished tonight so I can post about it before we leave for our holiday tomorrow.
Must say some of it is much different to the memories I had of it...

message 83: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments there's been a couple of bits where i'm thinking "this is a kids book?!" think someone else has mentioned something similar, but i'm enjoying it so far. 27% in so far

so much i want to type but it kinda spoiler so will have to wait till i'm finished an put it in spoiler thread!

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments At the moment I can't get into this book...maybe another time.

message 90: by Chookgate (new)

Chookgate | 74 comments I've just realised we're nearly half way through August and I haven't started it yet!

message 91: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Started mine yesterday, steady 13% so far. Don't really like how it's all compacted - not even a new page for a new chapter.... aAAAARRRRGGGHHHH it's really irritating the routine/habit freak monster inside of me !
But so far so good, I like the story - can't remember if I did read it in the past or not (or watched the movie, which is more likely) I can remember lots of movies with animals in the cold, not sure which one it is lol !

But then that's coming from a girl who believed until quite late in her teens that Jack London was the guy who played Mr Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie... yeah I don't get confused very easily !

message 93: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments This was one of the first I downloaded for my kindle. So read it back then, also Call of the Wild. Enjoyed them both. Yes, they can be brutal in places, so is real life.

message 94: by Freddiesmum (new)

Freddiesmum | 137 comments Well, I have tried again and after a couple of hours of slogging away I have decided its not for me at the moment. I will try again in a day or two but I doubt if its going to grab me. I had started to speed read it and still nothing is holding me. Maybe its just the wrong book for me right now, maybe it never will grab me, but at the moment its good for getting me off to sleep!! I will try once more.

You're not alone, I've got just over quarter of the way through, but it's a struggle, it's boring me - not because it's rubbish, but because since it was written, the subject has been done to death.

message 96: by Susan - Sukey (new)

Susan - Sukey (susan-sue) | 10 comments I'm another one who is not getting this at all, I'm afraid I shall have to pass on this one.

message 97: by Freddiesmum (new)

Freddiesmum | 137 comments Thats me done...given up. My reading time is precious, and this is boring me to sleep!
Waiting for the next readalong now....

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I started reading last night, I've read one chapter & then put the kindle down............not a good beginning because I usually read until I find myself falling asleep.

message 99: by Melvyn (new)

Melvyn (melvyn_melcom) | 7 comments Having finally finished In The Blood just before the end of its official bookclub month (and I greatly enjoyed it), I'm about to begin White Fang. I had downloaded it some time ago but not got round to reading it, perhaps not enthused enough to start. So thanks Patti for the push to begin it.

But it seems from some of the recent posts here that it's not for everyone - at least that should generate some discussion. (I haven't looked to see the other threads, to avoid any spoilers.)

Let's see what it's like........

message 100: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 75 comments Haven't read this thread for quite some time. Glad I did as I started it and decided it wasn't for me after about two hours. All my other books were calling me. A sure sign that perhaps it wasn't meant to be. I did appreciate how well written it was but the story and pace were simply not for me.
Glad I wasn't the only one as I was feeling a little bit of a numpty at that stage. The good thing about reading is there is something out there for everyone. I am looking forward to The Chrysalids though.
