Sounds nice! Is your cat big, or just *ahem* fluffy? One of my boys is getting a jiggly belly - he might need a diet ... first cat I ever had who got fat, honestly. They usually self-regulate their food, but this one has always been an eater, from the day I brought him home. I would have let our dog sleep on the bed, but he was not good about being house-trained and every time I've tried to let him, he's peed here. So, he is in a crate unless he's tied out. Can't let him run, 'cause he's a terrier mix, and, well, you know terriers! Hyper is a mild term ...

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments Our cat is just big...and fluffy. It's really hard to get a cat to lose weight too. They get whiny...at 3AM when their food runs out. They know what they are doing.

OH, don't I know it - and I have three of them to contend with! Little stinkers ... Do you know if your cat has Maine Coone in him? From the size of him it sounds like it ...

message 54: by C.S. Splitter (new)

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments He is orange and white but he does have the "M" on his forehead. The body type is almost right too. He is pretty long and fairly low, but he isn't quite as vocal as a Maine.

He's my first cat and it's been an experience. Sometimes, he comes in at night, stands up next to the bed and just stares at me. Quite unsettling.

That means he wants you to do something ... maybe give him pettin's, maybe feed him, maybe give him a treat, maybe do a little song and dance to amuse him ... it's hard to say.

Maybe he has some Siberian in him - I know that's what my Fluff looks like. Even Tiger, with his short hair, has tufts on his ears.

And all cats have the "M" on their forehead - even the solid-colored ones. You just can't see it ... it has something to do with the domestication process or something - it's all very mysterious. But, then, cats ARE very mysterious in general ...

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments I'm glad to know that being a back seat driver isn't just me then. LOL

My little chi/yorkie is awesome as well. although she isn't purebred chi, just half. LOL
She has been the easiest puppy I have ever had and she is so stinkin cute its awful. She also sleeps between us in the bed. :) and sometimes she brings her chew bone and drives my husband crazy with her loud chewing. I find it charming. LOL

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments Yep, ours brings chewies and squeakies (those are my wife's words, don't take my man card...) to bed sometimes. She has also figured out that she can play "fetch" all by herself by dropping the toys off the bed.

It's cute for about five minutes...

You are going to love Chi's. Very clean little dogs.

I had a cat who used to do that by dropping one of those super-bouncy balls down the staircase, then running down after it ... over and over *boing boing boing bounce* *thump thump thump* etc. ad infinitum ... Critters are clever that way.

message 59: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments So far I really do love the Chi. I don't know why but I didn't think i would like her quite this much. My husband laughed when I said that. ( itend to drag in every stray I see) LOL. Thats how we got our second cat. A stray and he is HUGE also. He is probably a good 18-20 pounds. He is part flame tipped siamese with light blue eyes and he is white/light orange. We don't know how old he is bc he literally followed me home. Down an entire street and he cried the whole way. When we got to the drive way he walked right up to my son and sat down. Nathan hugged him and that was it. Best cat we have ever had.
But he is a real pig. I call it homeless man syndrome. He eats until he pukes and gets upset when there is no food in his dish and I think its because when he was homeless he never got to eat. We could see his ribs. He is the friendliest cat ever. When we brought Cocoa home (the chi/yorkie puppy) he walked right up to her and started licking her head. Cocoa pulls his tail and barks at him bites his legs and he just lays there. LOL.
I have another cat too an black and white tabby cat. he is about 16 pounds, so hes a biggin too but he hates the puppy and doesn't like other people either. We call him the grumpy old man. lol.

All three cats and the dog were strays I took in - all as younglings, though. Fritz (the dog) was about 4 weeks, maybe 5; Erasmus, the older tom, was about 3 months and the babies (Tiger and Fluff) were about 2 1/2 weeks. And yes, I do know enough about cats to guesstimate the age of young ones that well ... :-)

message 61: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments Thats great that you take in strays!! We got my retriever from the pound and my tabby, rocky. Pumpkin followed me home. Cocoa is the only animal we have that we actaully got from someone with a liter.

I'm a sucker - I did the same thing for rats when we were keeping them. We'd go into the pet store with "SUCKER" flashing above our heads and one of the people would come up and say "we got this rat that someone brought back ..." and we'd be like *sigh* "let us look at it ..." and another at would join our family ...

I didn't mean to have all these cats - we had actually decided against adding any more when our neighbor called me over to tell me he'd found Tiger, and then while we were talking I heard Fluff crying and we got him, too. It was a super hot day and apparently their mother was nowhere to be found - so I brought them home so they didn't die of heat exhaustion, and raised them. They were from a feral litter. I think they had at least one other sibling, because a couple months back I saw a gorgeous cat walking across the backyard that had Tiger's build and markings, but Fluff's long hair and head shape.

To market or not to market? Or to look for an agent/publisher?

These are some of the questions that face an indie author.

(Hey, there's something wrong, it's printing in italics)
You're right, Splitter. Not being able to afford professional editors or others able to point out the flaws, in a burst of enthusiasm after "completing" my first work, I sent it off to a publisher. Back came the rejection it deserved. Each time after that, I polished and amended, changing things until at last someone said they liked it.

It was a steep and heartless learning curve, but I'd like to think the end product is better for it. If I'd gone the indie route first time, it would have died without a trace.

Thought-provoking indeed. I approached a major bookseller here in Oz about stocking my story, only to receive a toffee-nosed reply that "we are a mass market bookseller and only purchase titles available from major ... Distributors". And this just after a major book chain in Oz has gone into receivership!
Come on, E-books...

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments LOVED that movie! Scared the snot out of me as a kid though lol. I had the same reaction to the Bionic Woman episodes when she battled those cute fembots whose faces kept falling off.

Anyway...

I am actually done with my first edit. I think it's time for beta readers anyone is interested. Let me know!

message 86: by C.S. Splitter (new)

I have someone doing a first beta read for me...they find stupid stuff we don't 'cause we wrote the damned thing...so when that person is done I'll send it out to those that volunteer. That is unless I get told it sucks, then it'll be a while :).

Get your questions ready! I will be opening a new section on my blog for "Ask Tom Crayder" within the next week. Dear Abbey with his own special twist.
