Melki I think it would be cool to have a place to post any interesting items we find while surfing the web.

Post anything at all - news, cartoons, videos - if you find it fascinating, it's a sure bet someone else will too!

Melki I love old maps! (I sort of wish today's maps featured sea monsters.)
This site takes a while to load, but it's worth the wait.

Melki Did some of history's greatest leaders suffer from mental illness?

http://www.salon.com/books/history/in...

Seems odd to think that Bush's problem may have been that he wasn't "crazy" enough...

I was under the impression that Bush was a megomaniac. It would explain a lot.
On another note, just added another book to the TBR pile. Sounds interesting!

Noran Miss Pumkin | 23 comments Melki--Nail guns make my ER job interesting in the warm months. I am afraid, because of this article--more sad people will try this, since they do not have access to real weapons. Here in the Midwest-about 7-8 years ago-had a famous case of someone killing himself with a hammer-hit his head 40-50 times!

message 12: by Melki (new)

Melki I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor after reading your last sentence. I guess he was a very sad and very determined individual.

message 13: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin | 23 comments Melki-I think it would be great to post stories and blogs. Since I am an ER RN-I would have to edit some stories for the faint of heart. I have several doctor/nurse blogs I could offer up. Gruntdoc you can google him. He is an ER doctor in Texas. He post articles and relates stories now and then.

Melki I agree wholeheartedly. This group is way too quiet for my liking. I would love to hear some of your ER stories, and I'm sure others may have tales to tell. Please post ANYTHING in this topic.

Bunnie O'hara | 210 comments melki- i could tell you some stories the occured in ER-though i worked in ICU we responded to Code blues-some hair raising things occur in that place.

Melki Bunnie and Noran - please tell some ER stories. I'm all ears!

Not a difficult read but not an overwhelming great read either. I am still thinking on the review but I am vacillating between 2-3 stars. Some of his arguments seem legitimate but his support of "normal" mentally healthy individuals seems a little concerning.

message 23: by Melki (new)

Melki Denise - I was wondering if anyone would read this book. Thank you for your review.

Noran - OMG! I only read the first post, but almost fell off my chair laughing. Can't wait to read the rest of the blog.

Bunnie O'hara | 210 comments melki,-one of the code blues we answered was a drive by shooting--the paramedics brought in the victims in mast suits -that is to keep the blood pressure up as far as possible-but when they unzipped the suits you can't believe the amount of blood on the floor of ER--to keep from slipping we put towels down-the surgeon looked at one of the boys and said "i can't help this guy--but next week he was in our ICU-he had been shot in the wrist the groin --resulting in the loss of one testicle and several other places-it was one bloody mess-another time a suicide victim was brought in--she had done herself in with a 22--the inside of her brain was destroyed. a little 4year old fell running for the ice cream truck-hit his chin and broke his neck at C4 making him a quad--he was on a ventilator for a week then died of pseudamonas--it was a good thing.i cried over this one. some of these incidents are very sad when nothing can be done to save a life or the life is altered in a drastic way--i think the worst thing is the kids who gain access to guns and in playing with them accidentally shoot themselves.all these are so far away in my memory--sometimes it's hard to try to remember them.

Bunnie,
Those are really tragic deaths. It takes a very special type of person who can handle such serious emergencies and still stay focused enough to try to help. My thanks to all you nurses and doctors.

message 27: by Melki (new)

Melki That's very sad, Bunnie. No wonder you will always remember them. It must be hard to leave work behind when you go home sometimes.

message 28: by Melki (new)

Melki You're right, Yvonne - very interesting! And not a list that I'm anxious to get my name on.

Noran Miss Pumkin | 23 comments Bunnie-You must work at a knife and gun club ER-as they call them. I am lucky that my ER see traumas, but shooting are rare. So sorry for the 4 year old. I have a 2 year old drowning case, this is 2nd anniv. in heaven for the dear angel. These cases stay with you.

message 31: by Melki (new)

Melki Fascinating, Noran. Thanks.

message 32: by Bunnie (new)

Bunnie O'hara | 210 comments noran, funny i never thought of that--knife and gun club--yes i guess you could say so-we had a lot of drive by's-you rmemeber certain ones-the man that asked me Am i going to die?the 200plus black man in restraints because of PCP--a nurse in training took the leathers off one side to change his sheets which were wet and dirty--i told her PLEASE PUT THOSE RESTRAINTS BACK ON BEFORE HE WAKENS.the black man and his girl friend that were in our burn unit--he was so badly burned we could only get in IV in his feet-they had robbed a liquor store and crashed when the cops chased them--she lost fingers-he died.moral --never rob a liquor store!

Here Bunnie-the phrase was coined years ago. If you have not read this Photo filled book--give it a try, though it is 16 years old now.

message 35: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin | 23 comments It, though dated, is considered a classic. It is almost a photo art book telling the story. I have been an ER nurse for 25, hoe many years in ER for you Bunnie?

message 38: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin | 23 comments There are books-check my medical oddities books
Many retired to a town in Florida. Many were upset to have PC people take their living at side shows away. Where else could they work and make a good living-with others like them. There have been Documentaries about them through the years. The movie "Freaks" used real side show persons in the movie. Even the last episode of "The Glades", was set in the town where they settled. It even featured The mule faced lady in the last scene. I do not know if she was real or not-but I felt such empathy for her.

Also, the site I posted-has great respect for these individuals--cares a lot about them, Does not want them to be forgotten.

There is also the murder of the Lobster boy--real story, that occurred in the town.

I have cared for a "Pin Head" in my ER, though the condition is not called that. You could tell by the profile.
