Goodreads 2011 Reading Challenge – how's it going?
27 of 50 (54%)At my current pace, I'm 1 book (2%) behind.
I'm not counting comics, because then it would be too easy (and I'm trying to compare with previous years).
I envy all you people who can get in a hundred books in a year, or many more. Real life just gets in the way all the time, and working and my mom. She thinks I read too much. I keep telling her that I don't read much at all compared to all you book crunchers on Goodreads. I get most of my reading done when I should be sleeping. As for the challenge, I originally set it for 75 books, which was really pushing it for me since I barely got 50 last year. Now I've actually dropped it to 60 because I've been reading the Malazan books and those take me two or three weeks to get through. (I'm still hoping I can reach my original goal.) So far I've read 41 books.
*sigh* I haven't added any books in a while. I already had a slew of books I'd read that I needed to add when I lost my internet for two weeks. Now I'm at 114 according to my tracker but I have 52 or 53 books I've read since then that I just can't bring myself to add. I'm so lazy. I think my goal is 250 but I'm going to shoot for 300 this year. If I could go all crazy machine mode and manage to read 336, I'll reach 6000 for my lifetime total :) Not bloody likely but something to aspire towards at least.
Tracey, if I give you my log in id and password and a list will you add my books for me :D Pweeeeeease? *big brown puppy dog eyes* :D

I'm at 17 of 40. I have no idea how someone can read as many books as others do. Me, I like to savor books, imagine the scenes, daydream about what I see as future actions, etc etc. And with books like A Dance with Dragons, I peruse the maps, and review the lists of characters and so forth. So I'm fairly happy with where I am, since I seem to always pick up tomes rather than books to read :)
I don't think anyone should read faster than they can absorb and enjoy. Reading shouldn't be a competition or a chore.
I started out hoping to read 120, but have since upped the number to 150. With being on medical leave until September, I've found the time to read a lot more than ever before! I've already surpassed last year's page count, and am ahead of pace for 150 books. Not to mention, I've discovered so many new authors and series this year. It's really been a great year for reading!
I'm on 68 out of 100 so far - which means I'm, apparently, 12 books ahead. The books I read are, by-and-large, pretty quick reads, so I can get through them fairly quickly, for me at least. I also include graphic novels, though I've only read a handful of those this year.

I'm envious you managed to get onto Netgalley! I'm only with Manic and they don't have a ton of good stuff. :-( *sad panda*
@Majkia - I'm a real bookworm :) and I've been this way since i was a little kid. Unless I don't have the option I'm always reading something. I read during work (don't tell the boss!) of course at home, standing in any line, and sometimes while walking the dog or just walking.
Yes Gralant, I've almost gotten hit by a car for stepping into the street with my nose in a book instead of paying attention to what I was doing. *blush*
Tracey wrote: "Just curious: did you sign up for the reading challenge? Why did you set yourself the goal you did? How's your progress?"I signed up with the frankly pathetic 12, not knowing how much time I'd have for reading. Then I raised it to 12, then (at Grant's prodding...) 40, and now 50. I'm still ahead of myself; I didn't account for how many transatlantic flights I'd be taking. :)
I'm at 55 of 100, 1 book behind. But considering I only read 50 last year, and that was the most books I had ever read in any year of my life up to that point... I'm happy with 55 :)
I'm way ahead. I was behind until I think May came around then was ahead. I was way ahead of my goal that I changed by goal from about a book a day to 500 books.
Mine's for 100 and I have 66 read thus far some of them being graphic novels but most being longer novels :)
My goal was 40 books plus reviews to celebrate turning 40. :) Of course (for me), I've met the goal and increased, but my goal remains to write a review for all the books I read this year, re-reads or not. I like having a review to remind me of what I liked and didn't, and if I'd recommend. I also find it helps me be more introspective about what I'm reading.
My 2011 goal is 60 and I'm currently at 33. Just can't seem to want to read this summer. Last year I was a reading machine.
I set my goal at 67 when I joined. I thought I could make it to 100 but because I didn't join until the year had already started... I'm on book 64. I'll increase my goal as I meet it. And now I'm counting free novellas I get on my nook because if I don't I won't read them, although adding something that's only 100 pages seems like a cheat. But with reading all of the ASoIaF books out and a few Malazans I think it kinda evens out.
I'm doing good. I set my goal based on last year's reading, and I am ahead of where I should be according to good reads.156/240
I started at 100 then upped it to 150 sometime in May. I'm currently at 107 with another 5 books in the works.

I'm one book behind on my rather lofty goal of 36 books.
=)
I'm pretty inconsistent. I've read more this year than I have in a long time. If I read two dozen books last year, I'd be surprised.
I'm at 84% of my goal. I'm 7 books ahead of schedule, that's 27% ahead. WOO HOO! Do I have to admit that that's 21 out of my whopping goal of 25? lol Doesn't sound so good when you say it that way. But, then again, last year I only read about 10 books, so I guess I'm not doing so bad if I just compare myself to...um...myself.
No reason to compare yourself to anyone else. We all have our own pace and other stuff going on in our lives. :)
I have read 29 out of my goal of 50, i know it's not that much compared to the rest of you but i spend as much time as i can on reading.
☠The Dread Pirate Grant☠ wrote: "I don't think anyone should read faster than they can absorb and enjoy. Reading shouldn't be a competition or a chore."I agree and I truly wish at times I read slower. I taught myself to 'speed read' when I was in college and I've never learned to slow myself down. I KNOW I miss things ...
The 'up' side ... it doesn't take me long to figure out I don't want to finish a book ... and for the ones I really like and buy to own and re-read, the first 3 or 4 re-reads I keep 'discovering' bits I managed to skim over the first few reads.
I average 12 to 15 books each trip to the library, once a month, with occasional 2-week 'extras' if I get the new books which are 14-day checkout. There are usually 3 to 7 in the haul that I don't finish and after a week to 10 days, I have to rely on my own books for re-reads.
I aimed for 50 in 2009 and got to 66, then aimed for 75 in 2010 and failed miserably - I went through a huge slump all year and couldn't finish anything. I wasn't sure whether to set a goal for myself this year, but I decided recently to aim for 70. I'm currently 40 books / 57% of the way through. :D

We've been having almost daily thunderstorms for several weeks and I swear if there is a thunderstorm anywhere in the state of KY my Internet service goes down! I don't have a lot of patience with tech stuff so I end up throwing up my hands in disgust and going back to my books!
I've never kept track of the books I've read in the past. This is my first year every setting a goal and writing down what I read. It's been fun to keep track. I set my goal at 50, not really knowing how much I read in a year. Right now I'm at 37/50.
I wish I'd always kept track. I'd love to go back and look over everything. Here's a guy who's been doing it since 1974.
Scott wrote: "I wish I'd always kept track. I'd love to go back and look over everything. Here's a guy who's been doing it since 1974."Wow! That's guy's list is comprehensive. I wish I could have a list like that too. I just think it would be interesting to see everything I've ever read. I've kept pretty good track of it since I've joined Goodreads, but before then, I can only remember some of what I've read and have no idea when I read it.
I do try to write down the author of a book I particularly enjoy so I can add that author to my list. I'm always looking for books/authors that I enjoy enough to add to my own bookshelves so I have more to choose from when I re-read.Unfortunately, there are a lot of books I find 'readable' but also pretty 'forgettable' ... not something I'd want to re-read. And a few of those I've been known to pick up from the library a second time, not recognizing title or author and only realizing it's something I've read before halfway through the book.
I just had one of those recently and am almost ashamed to admit I didn't realize it was a re-read until I got into the last couple of chapters when there was a scene that I recalled.
I've tried to add everything I can remember reading since junior high or so, but I bet there's a lot I've forgotten.
Scott wrote: "I wish I'd always kept track. I'd love to go back and look over everything. Here's a guy who's been doing it since 1974."That's amazing! It reminds me of people who write in a journal everyday. I wish I'd done that too. It would have been great to go back and read it.
Sharon wrote: "Unfortunately, there are a lot of books I find 'readable' but also pretty 'forgettable' ... not something I'd want to re-read. And a few of those I've been known to pick up from the library a second time"lol with you on that one, Sharon. Done it a few times and I'm kind of embarrassed by it. GR is very helpful, because now I'll have my review and a description! I've been pushing my boundaries some with types of books... I'm much more willing to try a book and then just return it to the library if I don't like it--but with GR I have a higher chance of liking it.
Only at 74 so far this year. Gunnin' for 125 with my eye on 150.
I've challenged myself to read 140 books this year. From that list, I own 77 books and the rest are on my wish-list. Of the 77, I've read 38 so far and have 2 more on the go. Even if I don't make the whole 140, I'm hoping to at least get the books I own read. :)
Scott wrote: "I've tried to add everything I can remember reading since junior high or so, but I bet there's a lot I've forgotten."I've been doing the same although I know there are a few I'm not able to think of the titles for and that drives me nuts!
Oh man I feel you on rereading a book you've already read. I read the third book in the Wheel of Time series 3 times! Both of the rereads led ot me getting to the end before I realized I'd already read it! Very much a facepalm moment!
I was going for 75, but decided to read the 'Song of Ice and Fire' series of BRICKS, so I've dropped it back to 70 for the year (which is still about 30 books more than I've ever read before. But then there are quite a few graphic novels in there.)Right now I'm at 40 of 70
I'm at 29/50. I'm strugling to stay ahead of the target. I'd like to read faster (sooo many good books out there), but I'm a fairly slow reader. I reread passages, sometimes from chapters back, or stare at a map for 10 minutes or just stare into space for a while absording something I've just read and all that sort of stuff ... Doesn't help either that I spend a lot of my free time gaming. Usually expansive RPGs I lose 40-80 hours per play through on. I'm one of those obsessive 'need to explore everything!' gamers, even on second and third play throughs.
But then again, last year I just managed 30 books and that was by far the most I'd ever read in a year. So being already at 29 currently isn't that bad.
20 of 50 books. I decided to make a realistic challenge. hehe..I don't want to put too much pressure on reading. Slow and steady...
I hit 228 last year, so i thought I would up it to 250 this year. I just hit 150 today so I am 6 books behind. I am ahead on my goal of 60,000 pages though - 42,103.

I signed up - I orignally started with 100 Books in 2011 but I've since changed my challenge to 150. I'm at 111 books so far (not counting re-reads and shorts).
