Graceling
question
Anyone really upset about what happened to Po in the end????!!!! :(

Po was one of my favorite book characters ever! His personality was amazing I thought. I was REALLY upset to find out his head injury made him blind!!! Just wanted to know what other people thought.

I don't mind that Po got blinded <-- it's not the typical fairytale ending. However I DO mind that he and Katsa didn't get married. I mean the "friends with benefits" ending was really annoying. They weren't even an official couple 'coz Katsa has commitment issues. I hate it that the ending practically preached that to be a strong woman, "marriage" has to be considered overrated.

I thought it was a cop out. I felt the author had created a character she felt was too powerful and so had to balance him out a bit in the end. [I agree that his name was a distraction as well, Po? really?!].
This is the problem with giving people superpowers. Someone will get the ability that if you think about it in the right light, is way more powerful than anything else. I really enjoyed the story [and Fire was great too] but after thinking about Po's predicament, this is how I feel.

Po looses his sight!!! Why?!!:( why does the author write that po looses his sight!! He should not have loosen his sight.
I think po deserves to be a bit self pitying. I'm not sure I would handle loosing my sight well either. I like the way she made him go blind. I know that is weird but to me, thats the way real life is, and there aren't magical fixes, and he eventually began to pull out of his self pitying and accept himself as he newly was. I thought it was sad, but well done.
I thought thatnthe book would've done either fine or even better without Po becoming blind.. I was so heartbroken for both of them!! But i think that was the desired effect, aaand it kind of made their world more real. I mean, you can't expect to go against a powerful king without someone getting injured. :/
But I still think the book would've been better if Po didn't go blind!!:((

I hated his name too. I kept thinking that his name was actually "Prince Poo". It's not because I'm dirty-minded - Prince Poo is a character from the video game Earthbound. By the way, I hated that name in Earthbound, and I couldn't play the game without changing it. Po is also the name of a Teletubby, but Earthbound is what came immediately to mind when I read Graceling.
I also didn't like that he got injured, but his power made up (almost) entirely for his injury. He isn't inconvenienced by being blind, and he even manages to survive for months in the wilderness. It seemed like a cop-out. Also, it's highly coincidental that people get struck in the head and knocked out multiple times during the book, and only once does it result in a permanent injury. A blow to the head can kill.
Despite this, I liked the book.

its so sad but I think it was eventually going to happen because Kasta was either going to end up with him OR something interesting was going to happen so you had to go with the more interesting side

I think it made him better actually. It made him become more.... i don't know.... fall in love with Katsa more because she promised she would never leave.

I loved how he learned to see a different form of beauty as he accepted his blindness. It was something different that can happen to anyone. When books take a real world ordeal and give real world results it makes that book more special to me. =)
I didn't see any point in making Po go blind except to make me cry. I felt manipulated by the author and wanted to throw the book against the wall. That particular tragedy served no purpose to the plot of the story. I mean, sure, she writes about him learning to use his "grace" better. But that just felt like a lame rationalization.

I think Po's handicap wasn't that bad because his grace gave him sight without seeing.
At first I HATED it. I was crying as she left him alone in the cabin. I didn't like how self pitying he was either, but once he'd begun to "see" with his grace he got more of him self confidence back and he became more like his old self. Because of that I think it was all OK. I like the emotional parts; it isn't often that a book can evoke an outward reaction from me, but I also like good things to happen to good people in the end. And Cashore managed to do both. I really need to go get 'Bitterblue.'
Laurel Wanrow
I also thought it was an odd twist at first, then saw how his GRace developed from it. Might have been better earlier in the story and then used in so
...more
I was so sad!!!!! I couldn't believe he became blind!
it sucked wat happend to Po but at least he got a little help from his grace
Yes, lots of mixed emotions. However, I understand that Graceling is listed as Book 1 in a Trilogy, and though I haven't read Fire just yet (soon, very soon) I have some hope that Katsa and Po are revisited in book 3. Personally, I loved this book.
So sad that he wont be able to see beauty anymore :(
And to everyone who's like "omgz liek i hate how Po is leik self-pitying himself" Seriously you guys, he's blind want me to poke your eyes out so you can sympathize with him a bit?
