"Blow mountain goats"?

message 952: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments THE TERROR was incredible, yet I still haven't worked up the nerve to read DROOD.

message 953: by Char (new)

Char I thought Drood was ok. I learned a lot about Dickens and Wilkie from it.
Not that I remember any of it, except for the fact that they were friends. : )

Gatorman Jon Recluse wrote: "THE TERROR was incredible, yet I still haven't worked up the nerve to read DROOD."

Drood was terrific.

Interesting visual.

I'll make it my vacation read.

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I share the doorstop anxiety, though I find them less daunting on my Kindle. I think the lack of a physical book prevents me from focusing on the length.

message 958: by Marc (new)

Marc Iverson (marc_iverson) | 243 comments It is kind of odd how the kindle makes it easy to flip through pages without noticing how much you've read.

message 959: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Kindles cause short term memory loss?

message 960: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Yes, I am.

message 961: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments On my Kindle, every book is less than half an inch thick. Very non-threatening.

message 962: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I've never been threatened by a book.

Threatened with a book, yes.

Nuns are prone to hysterics......

message 963: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) I generally have little tolerance for doorstoppers, particularly when reading weird fiction. I often don't find characters overly stimulating and would much more prefer to enjoy a short story, heavy on the atmospherics and tension that derives from mood building. My idea of enjoyable characters are those that are fantastically bizarre ( a la Thomas Ligotti) or seriously fractured or damaged (a la Brian Hodge).

I think that is why I find King's work to be uninteresting in the worst kind of banal fashion. I'd much prefer to sip on a variety of short stories from various authors than glug down a doorstopper.

As much as I did enjoy KIN (and I really did), I think I have much more enjoyed Kealan's shorter works.

message 964: by Jon Recluse (last edited Aug 08, 2012 01:40AM) (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments That's one book I won't read.

message 965: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 363 comments What's the book called and who wrote it?

message 966: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman Kealan wrote: "Actually, now that I think about it, the last big book wasn't THE TERROR, it was 11/22/63 which I though was King's best in years."

I hated 11/22/63. Worst King book ever.

message 967: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I didn't hate it, but it would have been much better if he removed middle section of the book and just combined the first and third parts. It really dragged.

message 968: by Char (new)

Char I loved 11/22/63, but I think that Full Dark, No Stars was excellent as well.

I'll second that!

message 970: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I thought that Full Dark, No Stars was fantastic---especially the story about the guy who sold his soul. Very dark commentary on human nature.

My vote for King's worst book is Tommyknockers.

message 971: by Char (new)

Char Chris! I'm SO with you on the Tommyknockers. I think I damaged my wall with that book.
The ending of it reminds me of Eerie! LOL

message 972: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman I think I'm one of the few who liked The Tommyknockers. I found it very entertaining.

message 973: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I am currently reading the 3rd in the Andrew Mayhem series. I was on a bit of the doldrums about books, probably because I read two duds in a row, and needed a pick me up. I find the Mayhem series to be a lot of fun and they get me fired up again. Edgar Rice Burroughs does that for me too. Books that are pure fun and don't require much thought.

I have Gone Girl on deck.

message 974: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments David Moody's TRUST is pretty fantastic so far. It's very character driven like his stuff usually is, but a completely different setting.

message 975: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I agree. It went right into my all time favorites list also. I am curious about In Cold Blood. I bet it is fantastic.

message 976: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments It is.

message 977: by Char (new)

Char It is.

message 978: by Jon Recluse (last edited Aug 09, 2012 10:34AM) (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Is it?

message 979: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments If you liked THE BLACK DAHLIA, you should try My Dark Places.

message 980: by Glen (new)

Glen Krisch | 38 comments Loved IN COLD BLOOD.

message 981: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Hiya, Glen!

message 982: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Hey Glen!

message 983: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Hey, Chris!

message 984: by Char (new)

Char I finished reading Cameron's Closet, it was just ok. It sure as hell wasn't scary.

I am in the mood for something funny so I started Jeff Strand's Mandibles. Are there any Strand fans 'round here?

message 985: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments Jeff Strand's stuff is great. I recommend WOLF HUNT and DRACULAS, the book he co-wrote with Blake Crouch, F Paul Wilson, and JA Konrath.

message 986: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) Strand makes for an excellent comedic interlude. I was giddy reading his Gleefully Macabre Tales

message 987: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Giddy?

message 988: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 363 comments Good morning everyone

message 989: by Char (new)

Char Good morning! I have read both Wolf Hunt and Draculas, both of which I loved.
I finished Mandibles and I loved that too. Not as much as Dweller or WH, but I did like it.
I am in the weird position of not knowing what to read next. : )

message 990: by Chris (new)

Chris Bowsman | 191 comments I've heard recommendations for his book PRESSURE quite often.

message 991: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments That one is not one of his fun ones.

message 992: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Have you read any of Strand's Andrew Mayhem series? I have all of them and can lend if you want one, Charlene.

message 993: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) hey Jon. Been out of town and reading these posts.

Vacation?

message 995: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) Jon Recluse wrote: "Giddy?"

Outright giddy with laughter... =)
Some of his stories are exquisitely twisted in that very dark and macabre humorous fashion. Maybe a little too dark for some people's tastes...

message 996: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Okay.

message 997: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Nah. Just visiting family.
