Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments Finally started KIN, Kealan. I must say, it starts with a bang and so far has not let up on the tension one bit!

message 702: by Char (new)

Char Whoohoo Froggy! You think it's intense now? Just wait.

message 703: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments LOL I can only imagine!

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Hiya, Kealan!

I finished Dark Harvest.

Great story.

Is it in paper form? :( I still don't have Kindle access.

message 706: by Char (new)

Char I finished The Girl Next Door. What an intense read. It mostly made me angry and sad.
I started Heretics and am almost done.

message 707: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments I saw the Ellen Page movie about the incident and was just sick over it. I could never stomach the book; it takes too long (meaning I would be wallowing in its depravity) and would just depress the crap outta me.

I got it by inter-library loan.

Yeah, Sharon..it was quite disturbing and disgusting. But the most disgusting thing was the people who knew and who didn't do a damn thing. Evil flourishes when good men do nothing. Or some such quote. Entirely apt for that situation.

message 710: by Char (new)

Char OTOH, Heretics by Greg Gifune was awesome. I liked it a lot.

message 711: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments Jon, does inter-library loan mean paperback or Kindle? Sorry but your answer just served to confuse me more. :) We all know that's not hard to do....

Sorry, Sharon!

Inter-library loan means paper books. Whichever library in the county that has the item sends it to my branch.

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) I'm currently reading "The Satyr" by Stephen Clark. Its a mythical/fantastical meander through the mean streets of a bombed out London, during the height of the German raids. If anyone has read Bruno Schultz, you will probably really enjoy this novella... I certainly am.

The Satyr by Stephen J. Clark

Never heard of him but since horror and war go hand in hand, I'd say this one sounds like a winner.

Gotcha! I thought it was paper but I know you can loan Kindle books, too, so I thought I'd check. I need to ask my library if they ever got that program up and running; I know there was talk of it but I haven't heard anything since.

They just got the Kindle loaning program up and running here.
So far, it's mostly YA and James Patterson crap.

message 717: by Char (new)

Char Hey all!
I'm about halfway through Baal and enjoying myself. However, sometimes it's just pages of solid text and I find myself wishing for more dialogue. Also, this book was first published in 79, I think and the antagonist is in Kuwait or Iran now and in light of 9/11 Baal is probably more frightening to me right now as a terrorist than as a demon.

message 718: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments Wow It's been so long that I truly don't remember much about Baal but the middle east has its share of legends about demons in the sand and the caves, so I think it was based on that. Terrorists still bleed. Do demons? ;)

message 719: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments If I remember correctly, Baal isn't originally a demon. He may have been a god.

message 720: by Char (new)

Char Yes, a god at first...and then not. : )
See? That's a detail that I probably won't even remember 2 months from now. How do you remember all these details, Jon?

message 721: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Alex Trebek lives in my head.

message 722: by Char (new)

Char With or without the mustache? Because I imagine that that would be itchy. : )

message 723: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments With!
Not as itchy as his hair.... :P

message 724: by Char (new)

Char *snort* I think the guy just had a heart attack. I just can't imagine a world with no Alex Trebek.

message 725: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Me either.

message 726: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments Yes he did have a heart attack (another one, apparently) but I think he's doing pretty well. Jeopardy wouldn't be the same without him!

message 727: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Ain't that the truth!

message 728: by Char (new)

Char I just finished reading Endurance: A Novel of Terror and while I thought it was fun and fast paced, I don't think any hillbilly redneck book will be as good as KIN.
You ruined the hillbilly rednecks for me, Kealan. I am holding you responsible.

message 729: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman Just starting Midlisters by Kealan Patrick Burke by some Irish dude.

message 730: by Lorraine (last edited Jul 05, 2012 08:41AM) (new)

message 731: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman Thanks, Kealan. And no, "y'alls" doesn't work coming from you!

message 732: by Jon Recluse (new)

I grew up near the house they used in the opening of that show.
And that's exactly how my uncles talk!

message 743: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Here's one that always gave me the giggles:

If you are "early", you need to wash. You are greasy.
If you are "oily", you have arrived before you were expected.

Then you did a fabulous job of recreating a Brooklynese accent!

message 745: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman Finished Midlisters, liked it a lot. 4 stars.

What are you reading?

message 747: by Char (new)

Char Did you decide what you're reading next, Jon? Are you still reading the Wilkie Collins one?

message 748: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Not yet, Charlene.
Finished it last night.

message 749: by Char (new)

Char And? : )

Not one of his best, but still an enjoyable read.
His writing is comfortable and leisurely, with a fine sense of pace and humor.
I prefer him over Dickens.
