Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I loved The Island. I've loved all of hers that I've read, in fact.

Just finished a British (Brighton) detective story which I enjoyed a lot. You Can't Make Old Friends

Loretta (lorettalivingstone) | 419 comments I just finished The Blue Bells of Scotland by Laura Vosika. Lol, at first, I thought the title was a typo but now i think it might have been intentional. It's my fave genre, medieval time travel and although it has some historical bloopers, it's a cracking story. I'm going to get the rest to read later. First, I need to do some more research so it will be stuff like Roger de Wendover next. Sigh.

Ah, hang it, maybe I'll read book two of Blue Bells first. I deserve a treat.

Isn't it glorious when you have books you can regard as treats all lined up?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just finished The Island. Four stars. The chick lit type beginning and the bit tacked onto the end kept it from being five stars for me.
The descriptions of Crete made my mouth water for our visit!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Finished all three of my books this weekend, some very good reads

Sacrifice - 4*. Didn't realise it was a debut book until I'd read it, it was so gripping the only thing that stopped me reading it quicker was lack of time - towards the end, I even carried on reading rather than eating!! Would definitely recommend, and will read more of hers.

Chinese Whispers - 4*. I'd bought this a few years ago when they kept doing 20p books, I've not read the other 5 in the series, so nearly gave up on it, so glad I didn't. Ironically, I didn't read the back of it before starting it, so was really happy when I realised it was someone basing his killings on Jack the Ripper.

Poison in the Blood: The Memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia - 3* - this was another book I'd got for free a while ago, and for some reason kept putting off, but really enjoyed it. There are reviews saying it isn't very historically correct, but I don't know much about the Borgias, so I didn't notice that. Could do with a bit of a proof read though.

Started Paid In Blood, 30% in

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Just bought A Doctor to Dragons and am planning to start it tonight. Apparently it's like a James Herriot for mythical creatures. Sounds irresistable.

Just finished it. Consisted of 2 short stories. Good ones, I will admit, but really??

I thoroughly enjoyed The Island too, not my usual sort of read.
I've been catching up a bit, and have just finished the excellent Joanne Harris books Gentlemen and Players swiftly followed by Different Class - though I kept imagining Alan Bennett's The History Boys film as I was reading them - with the wonderful Richard Griffiths as the Latin master Straitley.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've started The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse mostly because the title is so awesome.

Only 23 pages in, so we'll see...

message 11864: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Sharpe's Battle Sharpe's Battle (Sharpe, #12) by Bernard Cornwell , in which they had a battle and Sharpe was there.

A good read.

Just about to start The Departure (Owner Trilogy, #1) by Neal Asher The Departure.

Gave up on it. Might revisit it one day. Didn't fit my current mood.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Well, I'm reading The Fifth Child at the moment and I must say I'm impressed with her writing style. It's only short. 134 pages, according to my kindle. If I didn't keep falling asleep, I would have finished it last night!

I'll get back to you when I'm done but I think there's a great number of groupites who'd like it.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I read it a long time ago. Creepy! Also On Cats

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're right, it is deliciously creepy.

I may have downloaded a few more of her books this morning. Oops.

Don't tell Dave.

I don't feel guilty enough to return them, mind. ;)

David Hadley Patti (baconater) wrote: "Has anyone heard of The Fifth Child or the author Doris Lessing? Apparently, she won the Nobel prize for literature several years back."

I read a few of hers a long time ago.

The Grass is Singing is good
The Golden Notebook is extraordinarily dull
There were a couple of others I read but I can't remember which ones.

David Hadley Patti (baconater) wrote: "Uh oh. I grabbed The Golden Notebook. The blurb grabbed me."

Yeah. I was quite keen to read it at the time. I'm not sure if I got all the way to the end. I found it years after I'd put it down still with a bookmark in it.

You might like the Africa bits.

I remember I found the communism bits very tedious, but then I'd just finished reading Das Kapital at the time.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just now finished The Fifth Child. Ooooooooo it was good! Creepy, as Rosemary said. Sparsely written, not a single unnecessary word, I'd say.

Kath, I think you'd like it especially.

I'm going to read the sequel Ben, In the World: The Sequel to the Fifth Child right this minute!

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments Race to the Bottom is dark and broody noir about the downward spiral that is Roy's life. Depressing and somehow uplifting at the same time. I believe that Chris Rhatigan is going to write something of real significance to a generation at some point in the near future. Here's hoping.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Good As You: From Prejudice to Pride - 30 Years of Gay Britain by journalist Paul Flynn, and it was an eye-opener. It will mean more to those who have an ear to popular culture (I had to look musicians, TV stars and sportsmen up on Google!) but it's a totally engrossing read.

message 11897: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments This one's newly published but I think it'll go far. I got a copy from the publisher via Netgalley and it's fantastic. Currently at £7.99 for the ebook (!!??!!) but prices go down when the paperback is published. Look out for it when the price drops. I think it's worth full price but then if you wait you'll get more books for your dosh and everyone wins!

Will you sacrifice further reading time on the series?
