Have you read the Deeds of Paksenarrion series, Pat?

One of my ex-boyfriends would re-read it religiously every year same as Lord of the Rings.
I couldn't get into it.

Yes, I have many years ago. Not as good as as the 'Varta' and 'Serrano' books. They are much better, as is The Speed of Dark and Remnant Population.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Tell No One is good!

It's publication day for Steve Robinson with his new genealogical mystery - Dying Games. Steve was our first Biook Club choice here, if my memory isn't totally shot. It's excellent!

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Kingdom of Shadows at last - bit of a marathon and occasionally I felt it could have finished a good bit sooner. However, I'm doing it for a blogpost and review will follow when I've recovered.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Thicker than Water (Murray of Letho, #10 by the lady above! I never tire of these with their historical settings and the characters who are now like old friends. I think this would stand well on its own, however, and engourage you to read it.

It's ages since I read the old series. Glad she's come back to it; I really couldn't get into Paksenarrion etc. I should add Varta's War to my "to re-read" pile, cos I've pretty much forgotten it.

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) Just finished I Saw a Man. Didn't really live up to its early promise. About to start Maigret's First Case. Haven't read any Simenon since I was at school (slowly, in French) but I've been enjoying the Rowan Atkinson series so thought I'd give it a try.

Great review. More or less what I thought, only you are a bit more positive about it than I was.

Yes, I too had memories of it being a much better series than I've found it this time around.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments About to finish All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell. Forgot how much I loved the Scarpetta books. Haven't decided what to get onto next.

message 11760: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished The Intellectuals and The Masses: Pride and Prejudice Among the Literary Intelligentsia, 1880-1939 The Intellectuals and The Masses Pride and Prejudice Among the Literary Intelligentsia, 1880-1939 by John Carey , which was sort of interesting in that the snobbery and disdain of those who believe themselves above the common herd doesn't ever seem to change much.

Just started Catching Fire How Cooking Made Us Human by Richard W. Wrangham Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human, hoping for a chapter or two on bacon.

Just bought that. It'll be a while before I start on it though.

Victoria Prescott (victoria_prescott) | 42 comments I recently read the latest in the Chronicles of St Mary's by Jodi Taylor.

Currently reading Star of the Morning : The Life and Times of Lady Hester Stanhope by Kirsten Ellis. Not greatly impressed; she states a lot of things as fact that she can't possibly know to be true, and there are some small factual errors that should have been picked up. Doing a lot of skipping and probably won't finish it.

message 11765: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished After the Crash After the Crash by Michel Bussi which was not a bad story, but perhaps the translation could have been better. Worth the 99p I paid for it, but maybe not much more.

Just started Before the Fall by Noah Hawley Before the Fall.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've thoroughly enjoyed every Andy Barrett I've read. I've got a few to catch up on, mind.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished Tell No One. It was meh. Three stars. I didn't get on with the switching from first person to third person every few pages.

I've started Stardust.

Really enjoying it so far.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell, which was great in parts and very informative, but rather bogged down by political minutiae.

Just started Love Virtually by Daniel Glattauer, a book written entirely in emails. 11% in and really enjoying it so far.

Tim | 8539 comments Just started A Rare Book of Cunning Device (Peter Grant, #5.6) by Ben Aaronovitch . A Rare Book of Cunning Device It's a Peter Grant short story, basically a ghost story set in the British Museum. I think it's Audible-only, but it's free, and I reckon Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an awesome narrator. :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished Stardust. Simply delightful.

I'm on page 50 of American Gods and I'm loving it.

message 11777: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just reviewed One Punch: A Paul Storey Crime Thriller which happens to be the second in a crime series but it reads very well as a one off. It doesn't lean on the previous book the way some do.

Victoria Prescott (victoria_prescott) | 42 comments Just finished Rattling the Bones, on of Ann Granger's Fran Varady mysteries. One of those pleasant, undemanding reads that are just right when you don't want to use too much brainpower.

Next on my list is one by Jennifer Robson, an author new to me. I've been saving it until I've got time to give it proper attention.

Have you seen the film? It's very enjoyable too, although different from the book in parts.
I haven't read a neil gaiman I didn't like

message 11780: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I loved Stardust, both the book and the film, and American Gods is great. There's also a full cast audio version, which is brill (and the sequel, Anansi Boys is narrated by Lenny Henry, which is also awesome)

Sadly the TV show of American Gods is on Prime, so I shan't get to see it :(

message 11781: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments My cousin told me about the Stardust film on Facebook. Think we'll watch it this weekend.
One of the reasons I'm reading American Gods is cuz I wanna before I watch the series.

Tim, you should email or message Geoffy about the fire stick.
Tell him I sent you.
He'll know why.

Tim | 8539 comments No thanks. a, not paying for the service, and b, no free holes in telly for yet another bleedin' dongle (and remote to lose). If they provided an app for my Humax set top box that would be one thing, but I'm not prepared to keep unplugging it in order to watch Prime.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Got an hdmi splitter thingmy in the back of my telly as unplugging and plugging things in is indeed a complete pita!

message 11784: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished The Cruellest Month, which I enjoyed very much. They come across as almost deliberately cosy, but there is a darker edge to them.

message 11785: by David (new)

David Hadley After finishing After the Crash which is about a plane crash, I decided to read something different, so I picked Before the Fall Before the Fall by Noah Hawley , which - it turns out - is about a plane crash. And it is excellent.

As some might know, the author Noah Hawley is behind Fargo off of the telly. So if you like that, you'll probably like this book.

Just started Born Bad by Marnie Riches Born Bad which is off to a fine start.

Also finished Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human Catching Fire How Cooking Made Us Human by Richard W. Wrangham , which was pretty good stuff.

Just started The Undercover Economist Strikes Back How to Run-or Ruin-an Economy by Tim Harford The Undercover Economist Strikes Back: How to Run-or Ruin-an Economy

David Hadley Just finished rereading Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury , which was very good (of course), although I still prefer The Martian Chronicles as a book.

Just started rereading Strangers by Dean Koontz Strangers which I remember really liking the first time I read it. I've been fancying rereading it for a while now. It was 99p on the Book Hippo list today, so I grabbed it straight away.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Just finished Thicker than Water by our own Lexie. (Sorry Lexie, couldn't seem to activate a link.) As enjoyable as ever.

Just started Clovenhoof on our son's recommendation. Liked the premise - the devil is made redundant due to a re-shuffle and gets sent to the nearest thing to Purgatory: suburbia!

now reading The City of Mirrors

message 11798: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Clovenhoof had a lot of humour in it I liked it, but the next in the series got a bit strained for me. I think they were milking a dry cow by then.

Just started Every Seventh Wave by Daniel Glattauer. This is the sequel to the wonderful love story, Love Virtually. Both books are written entirely as emails.
