Lexie wrote: "Heard good things about The Ghosts of Belfast but Amazon was doing one of those odd things when I went to buy it and the only copy for sale was a used one for several thousand pounds - decided to wait! "It is good - Amazon reckons they have a paperback for 41p today, but it is interesting what you can find on the bookshelf in a jury room.
Am raiding the bookshelves in our holiday apartment. In two days I have read Not Quite Nice and The Shakespeare Secret. Loved them both. The Celia Imrie book was witty and charming, with recipes scattered through it, and the Carroll one was fast-paced and an adventure. Going to go and peruse the shelves now for my next read.
Just finished book five of a series, Nigerian Connection by Keith Hoare. Oh my god, I'm still reeling. My experiences of series books they don't often get better, I read them because you get used to the characters, but this one topped the lot. If you enjoy crime, particularly international crime, it doesn't get any better.
I've started Russian Connection now, seems like I'm hooked to read all 13 in the series. I'll tell you how I get on.
Just finished a pretty decent crime book set in Harrogate. Hell's Gate, by Malcolm Hollindrake. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just a minute ago finished A Man Called Ove and had to rush in tell everyone who hasn't yet to read it NOW!Such a lovely book.
I'm still sobbing a bit.
It's brilliant! However, his next book - My Grandmother sends her apologies and somthing else - I was disappointed in.
Okay doke - been raiding the holiday apartment bookshelves again!Just finished Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer and immediately hit my kindle and downloaded and started The Sins of the Father. Enjoying them.
Finished The Girl from Venice
the other day. Fair enough I suppose, not a patch on Gorky Park.Started
A Good Day to Die
Kath, have you read Sword at Sunset?Dave is reading it at the moment and was just telling me about it. I thought it might be something you'd enjoy.
Just finished The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology
, which was more than excellent. A recommended book.Just started
The Intellectuals and The Masses: Pride and Prejudice Among the Literary Intelligentsia, 1880-1939.

Read this years ago; picked up a copy secondhand as it was long out of print, so nice to see it's available now on Kindle. The story of King Arthur but as a Roman Britain warlord with Celtic elements, which must have been one of the earliest of those takes on the Arthurian legend. Enjoyed it as I recall. I've just checked and it was also a sequel to her YA The Lantern Bearers.
Read book 4 of the Witch World series by Andre Norton - Warlock of the Witch World - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1954249088.
Roam by Erik Therme. The cast are young American kids but their problems are ours. Who are people?http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I'm becoming bored with The Light Between Oceans. I'll pick it up before bed again tonight but if it doesn't improve, I think I'll ditch it.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Life is too short to read books that aren't enjoyable."Too true, even with books that have been enjoyed by thousands. I recently gave up on I See You at chapter 4. Maybe I wasn't in the right place at that time for that story, but it totally bored me, despite its 4* average with 10,000 ratings of Goodreads.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Life is too short to read books that aren't enjoyable."Too true. I recently gave up on Reamde, even though it had been recommended to me by multiple people, because it was just so dull.
Just finished Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of FranceWhilst non-fiction it's such a good read that I think it's worth including here. It's a chunky book, well over 400 pages but fascinating
I dumped The Light Between Oceans this morning. I found myself making mental summer shopping lists as I was reading it.
I didn't even bother flipping through to the end.

I think I saw it raved about by a newspaper book reviewer which is normally enough to put me off :-)
Finished Not Dead Yet - only 3* as some of the underlying themes to the season are annoying me. Reading Poison in the Blood: The Memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia on the old kindle, quite enjoying it. Just about to start Stone Kiss (Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus, #14) in paperback

I've got both of those, might bump them up

, which was remarkably dull.Just started rereading
Fahrenheit 451, not sure how many times I've read it before, but at least once.

I really enjoyed them and downloaded the third one straight away but ... I kind of lost interest and moved onto something else! Read Queenie by Michael Korda which I first read in this very same apartment about 20 years ago!! Still loved it. Am now reading Gone for Good by Harlan Coben. Been zooming through it today.
Out today - The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve. I've read quite a few of hers so when I got the offer of this from Netgalley I snapped their hand off!http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Finished Angela Marsons' Blood Lines. This series continues to grip me. There's a new one I must catch up with.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Just finished A Good Day to Die

After the Crash, which was 99p on Amazon a few days or so ago.

Funnily enough I quite liked this one as it reminded me of an Agatha Christie whodunnit - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1738943707. But not a keeper; the whole series has had to go sadly, after memories of it being fantastic - seem to have changed my opinion since my teens!

Alexandre Dumas and Jean Plaidy did interesting jobs on her...
I confess to not reading either, but she's appeared in several of the histories of the period I've read and 'doesn't come out of it well' :-)
Inspired by Kelly, I looked through the Harlen Corben books I've got and started Tell No One.Quite a good page turner so far.

I've enjoyed the Shreves I've read. I find I need to read a light comedy afterward, though. Same as after reading anything by Diane Chamberlain.
