David Hadley Kath wrote: "I often find that books which go over 4500 locations (don't we think differently now?) could do with cutting down."

Quite probably.

Maybe now that books don't have to impress with their thickness on the bookshop shelf, or fit a certain number of physical pages, that could change.

I suppose the location/page thing is like the change from proper money to decimalisation, we'll get used to it, but still feel there is something not quite right about it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just finished Sweetheart

Not bad. I gave it four stars. If there's a third book in the series, I'll read it sometime.

No idea what I'll read next. I think I fancy something happy. Too many murder books in a row can be depressing.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Magician (The Riftwar Saga, #1-2) by Raymond E. Feist

I've posted my review for Raymond E. Feist's Magician: Apprentice, and it was as much of a joy to read as the first time I read it - a fantasy classic in my opinion:

I want to see the psycho get caught.

Steven | 173 comments I've not been on here for it must be nearly a year but don't worry I won't list all the books I've read in that time... I'll just say that I've just finished The Accident by cl Taylor and now reading Custard Tarts and Broken Hearts by mary gibson which, shall we say is a little different to my last read!

message 10765: by Sam (new)

Sam Kates Recently finished Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth Divergent, but it really wasn't my cup of tea. I love dystopian, but pretty much hated this.

Now reading Moving Pictures (Discworld, #10; Industrial Revolution, #1) by Terry Pratchett Moving Pictures as part of my reread of the Discworld series. As good as when I first read it many moons ago.

Soon to start The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins The Girl on the Train.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Read the sequel to The Dark Lord of Derkhom, Year of the Griffin Year of the Griffin (Derkholm, #2) by Diana Wynne Jones which had some weaknesses.

message 10767: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I never finished Cellar Door, the characters started to irritate me and it all just got too ridiculous for my taste.

I then read The Beggar King which I really enjoyed despite its failings, I was still thinking about it even after reading Sword of Damocles which was also fantastic!

I'm now reading Jude the Obscure

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I read Evil at Heart in two days. Haven't read a book in two days during term time in forever.
It was good. A bit gory and a couple of incidents were very ewwy.

I've moved onto the fourth in the series but it's not caught me up as the last one did.

The fourth is The Night Season

David Hadley Just finished rereading Scaredy Cat Scaredy Cat (Tom Thorne, #2) by Mark Billingham which probably didn't really merit a rereading.

Just started rereading Keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell Keep the Aspidistra Flying, which I've reread several times already. It's probably my second favourite Orwell novel after 1984.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to anyone, especially if they aren't familiar with Orwell. But those that like him will probably like this one.

It's the one with the book seller, isn't it. I quite enjoyed it.

message 10775: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I did think it was odd at the time, she isn't a reader, never mind an intellectual reader (in the instance, intellectual meaning non chick-lit). She's more a fashion magazine kind of girl. She is quite concerned about what people think of her so it is possible she thought I would be impressed if she recommended it and think better of her, which is daft because I love her for exactly the way she is and the only thing wrong with her is she doesn't live 2 streets down from me anymore *sobs*

It is , yes.

It is very much of a particular time and place though, unlike 1984 and Animal Farm.

He wrote about half a dozen novels, as well as some non-fiction, essay, journalism and so on.

Me being me I've read more or less all of it, including all four volumes of his collected essays, journalism & letters.

David Hadley Just finished Human Remains Human Remains by Elizabeth Haynes which was a damned fine book.

Highly recommended.

Just started The Dead Can Wait (Dr John Watson, #2) by Robert Ryan The Dead Can Wait, the second in the series featuring Mr Holmes' mate Dr Watson, this time back from the trenches. The first one in the series was very good, so high expectations for this one.

My phone and my Fire tablet have got magnetic cases, they both got stuck to the fridge yesterday.

I hold on very tight when I carry them past the fridge.

Makes you wonder what people did with their magnets before fridges were invented.

Ah. There you are, you see.

Once someone invented the fridge for people to stick their magnets to, someone else had to invent the filing cabinet for people to store all their iron filings that were no longer attached to those magnets.

That is how civilisation progresses.

David Hadley Jud (Disney Diva) wrote: "My fridge has a cupboard door attached to the front so I have no magnets :o("

That's a shame.

Nothing brightens up a day like shutting the fridge door and all the magnets drop off and disappear under the fridge.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Ah! Thats what I was missing!

*goes to Amazon looking for interesting fridge magnets*

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Gingerlily - Mistress Lantern wrote: "How do you clean iron filings off magnets? I generally end up with a permanently furry magnet..."

Magnets lose their pull after they've been dropped a few times. The iron filings fall off onto the floor.

message 10798: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Then you go back to the fridge door for a magnet that'll get them off the floor...

message 10799: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No, then you go to the resource room to see there are any more magnets. Then you email your colleagues to see if they have any in their classroom. Then you give up on the lesson.

I've just finished re-reading Ian M. Banks' Excession, and it remains not only one of the top science fiction reads, but one of my favorite books ever:
