Guy Portman (guyportman) Just finished The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. This is my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Just started Mrs. Dalloway

Guy Portman (guyportman) I hope I do too Stuart. Have a good weekend.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Odd Girl Out by Ann Bannon, 1950s lesbian pulp fiction, written by a lesbian, and totally positive regarding gay and straight expressions of sexuality.

Just started (20% through) Embracing the Power of Truth by Shavasti. It's little known, but was highly recommended to me by a random person I met. The author was held at gunpoint and terrorised, after which followed months of rage, grief, paranoia, fear, depression. This led to some massive soul-searching, which he records in the book. Really enjoying so far.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Just finished Fractured which was a surprisingly good read - tho the prose is a bit flat at times. Nevertheless, it had me hooked to the end, wondering how it was going to be resolved.
Now started The Excursion Train, second in the Railway Detective series. I remember the first book was entertaining, and so far so good with this one.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Just started Andy Barrett's Black by Rose by Andrew Barrett . Really enjoying it, seven chapters in.

message 8808: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Tripwire (Jack Reacher, #3) by Lee Child just started the The Visitor (Jack Reacher, #4) by Lee Child . I'm re-reading the Reacher books and it is interesting that even though it's only a couple of years since i read them I'd not remembered many of the twists and turns so i'm really enjoying them. Tripwire was no exception although it was a little poignant due to the fact one of the characters has an office in the Twin Towers (written before 7.11).

message 8809: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Scarlet Gospels by Clive Barker

I've just finished reading Clive Barker's The Scarlet Gospels and while it's not his best book it's still a damn fine horror read:

message 8811: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just started the third in Marsali Taylor's Shetland crime series, A Handful of Ash - only just finished the second, The Trowie Hill Murders, which is a sign I might be hooked. Still completely confused by all the sailing stuff which even in a book makes me feel faintly seasick, but I like her crofter policeman who is more at home on land. Also reading A Surfeit of Angels by P. Chisholm, which is fantastically entertaining, and The Devil's Recruit, by Shona Maclean, very good so far.

message 8812: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I managed to get a bit of reading done over my holiday period.
I loved this one Because She Loves Me. It's not on my blog because he's now with Thomas and Mercer - so not indie.

I'm most of the way through Death Squad. Another very good private detective story from Bill Todd.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Just finished Bad Blood, found it interesting to know what is below New York and that they don't have a source of fresh water.
Now starting Living with Evil , think it'll be a harrowing read, not read one of these for a while

Thanks Lexie. I enjoyed the Ann Cleeves' books, so delighted to find more Shetland crime! Have downloaded the first in the series, Death on a Longship
Have just finished the second Railway Detective novel
The Excursion Train which was ok but the writing is a little flat-footed, and the dialogue often stilted. Am now relaxing with a little Cadfael while I decide what to read next.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I find him a bit hit and miss, Fiona. Thought The Magpies was over-hyped, really loved Because She Loves Me. Haven't tried WYWF. Maybe I won't.

Now reading Kill Them Twice which is an excellent read.

Do you like Aliens, UFOs and stuff like that lol?

message 8822: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments At one time I'd have said yes but it depends on the context. I read science fiction but I don't go for the galactic wars, boys' toys raygun stuff.

Lol, I'm not saying what the book was about, but it had those elements added in x

Just allowed myself to buy Ann Cleeves' latest Shetland, Thin Air, in paperback (the ebook was too expensive, and I finally encountered an independent bookshop and treated myself!). Thoroughly enjoying it so far - still rather different from Marsali Taylor. Hope you enjoy them too, Karen!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Just finished First Light by Geoffrey Wellum The true story of a man who joins the RAF in 1939 and finds himself in the middle of the Battle of Britain in the legendary 92 Squadron who flew out of Biggin Hill and Manston. At 18, he was the youngest fighter pilot in the battle.

Now reading The Comedians, by Graham Greene

message 8830: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Kill Them Twice which is a great thriller - a real cat and mouse game and witty too.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Just about to start The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I'll be interested to read what you think of the Ocean at the end of the Lane, Kath.

message 8832: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'll let you know. Some friends have raved and others haven't finished it.
I love Marmite, though! ;)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I read it, but was not unduly impressed.

message 8836: by David (new)

David Hadley I quite liked it.

message 8837: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Prescott (victoria_prescott) | 42 comments Been on a bit of a crime/mystery reading binge recently. Among other things, I read two of Jill Paton Walsh's continuations of the Peter Wimsey series. I don't much like continuations by other authors, and these ddn't really do anything to change my mind.

Did like Elly Griffiths' The Zig Zag Girl.

Also read the latest in Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's series. Books on my 'I wish I'd written that' list.

When you've finished, I recommend going back to the beginning and reading them all again. Things that are only mentioned in passing turn out to be important later, and re-reading helps with following the overall plot. Plus you get to enjoy the funny bits again!

message 8840: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments She does seem to spend a lot of time reminding people what happened previously. I've already mentally said "That's the second time you've recapped that event in this book!" at least once.

It'll be a good couple of months till I get to book 4 - there's a lot of other good stuff yelling at me from my TBR, & The Shepherd's Crown is my next Audible listen. (although the St Mary's short stories are free on audible, so I'll almost certainly give them a listen)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments I finished Tales from a Magistrate, not a bad read, but it could do with some padding out

message 8842: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Last night I finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I know it's divided opinion but I couldn't stop till I'd finished - my eyes still ache!

David Hadley Finished Writing the Breakout Novel Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass which was pretty good, but very slightly dated now in its dismissal of ebooks.

Just started Self Publishing Attack! The 5 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws for Creating Steady Income Publishing Your Own Books by James Scott Bell Self Publishing Attack! The 5 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws for Creating Steady Income Publishing Your Own Books

message 8844: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Just finished Black by Rose Black by Rose by Andrew Barrett which was brilliant. A strong 5*

Going to read Finders Keepers next.

message 8845: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished re-reading The Joke The Joke by Milan Kundera which wasn't as good as I remember it, not too bad but there are others of his I like much better.

Just started re-reading The World According to Garp by John Irving The World According to Garp, which seems to have stood the passage of time better than the one above.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished CXVI by Angie Smith. Great thriller and much to recommend it - unless you hate cliffhanger endings. I wish I'd waited till the other two were out.

Light???

What sort of archaic device are you reading from that requires an external light source?

message 8848: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I read on a tablet. I hate reading just by the light of that, though. It's suddenly garish by comparison. I prefer to have my bedside light on too, then I can see what I'm doing when I put the tablet down and stow my specs for the night.

Makes sense.
I can't use my iPad in a dark room. Gives me headache.
Kindle is fine though.

Do you still have a working kindle, Kath?
