Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Finished Merry Christmas Alex Cross last night, not my favourite of his. Now ploughing on with The Dark, before the next two Alex Cross books.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments If you like blood and guts I can recommend Rod Glenn's Sinema books. I've read the first and second and have just started on number three. Not for the faint hearted though.
Sinema: The Northumberland Massacre
sinema 2 sympathy for the devil
Sinema 3: The Troy Consortium

Just started Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.

David Hadley Just finished The Mote in God's Eye, which was not as good as I remember it from about 30 years ago, but then few things are.

Just started The Submissive which is - apparently - about a librarian. Can't wait to see what she thinks of the Dewey Decimal system.

It does bear a remarkable resemblance to the 50 Shades book, but apparently this one came first - as it were.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Heretic by Lucas Bale. It's a very good read and I'm nearly half way through the second of this series. It's getting even better!

Where are you getting your reads from, Kath?

You keep talking about authors and books I've never heard of.

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments I saw it on Hippo today, it looks really interesting!

message 8316: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments He's a Goodreads author.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I thought it looked good, went to check it out and discovered I read it last year!

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Added to my to read list.

message 8319: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That one's good - the second is better - probably because I know more of the situation.

message 8320: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just reviewed Julie Mclaren's latest - a psychological thriller called The Butterfly Effect. It's a real 'who can you trust' dilemma.

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments I just (well, yesterday, but I've been busy) finished Top Banana by Kath Middleton, and started Kirk Sandblaster Plays the Game of Yloria by Oli Jacobs. Restoring my indie quotient after a few weeks of not enough reading!

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Just finished Fuel to the fire by David Staniforth and just started Wanted by Tim Arnot.

I'll be reviewing Fuel a little later today, as soon as I can get a stable connection. So far thought, all I'm willing to say is 'ooo'!

Also just purchased Hunted by Tim Arnot and Ruler's Desire by David Staniforth. Some serious reading going on today, I can tell you!

Which I thoroughly enjoyed. Now I am going to read In the Blood - Lisa Unger for a buddy read with someone off Goodreads.

message 8325: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Fatherland which was reasonable.

Just started Sword Song which is the 4th book in the Saxon series.

message 8326: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Last book I read was by a colleagues (an oncologist) husband who was diagnosed with a brain tumour about 8 months ago and given18 months to live. He has written the book to try and make more money to leave behind for his family (he is not curable unfortunately).
He has a very strange sense of humour so the book is surprisingly hilarious in places despite the subject matter! And not so surprisingly some bits very sad!!

Totally give that book a wide berth then, Patti. I'm looking sadly at my vast and beautiful leather shoes collection currently. ...

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Rapturous Pejoration (Contact 5) by Mike Freeman

I've just finished reading Mike Freeman's Rapturous Pejoration, which is the latest in his 'Contact' series and it's a cracking sci-fi read. Check out my review here:

David Hadley Just finished Sword Song which was the usual sort of Cornwell fare done well.

Moved The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao to my Gave Up On folder. Dull, meandering, self-indulgent, tedious.

Just started Looking Good Dead.

message 8332: by Colin (new)

Colin Rees | 4 comments I have, but not read, Looking Good Dead. I have also got Dead Simple, so please let me know what you think of Looking Good Dead. I might move it further up the 'must read soon' pile. Happy reading. Colin

Anita | 3313 comments I enjoy all of Peter James novels Colin, well worth a read.

message 8334: by Colin (new)

Colin Rees | 4 comments Many thanks, Anita, it is good to have a trigger and motivation to help select the next read. I have so many books on my kindle I forget some of them. It was good to see David's message to make me think: 'I'm sure I have that one'. Thanks for your message.

I read Dead Simple and really liked it a lot, which is why I'm reading LGD now.

Colin Rees | 4 comments That's brilliant, David. It is always great to get a recommendation on a book. I will move those two up the virtual pile. Many thanks.

David Hadley Just finished The 90-Day Novel: Unlock the story within, which was a pretty good book on doing the writing stuff. I didn't do the 90 day thing, of course, but just read it for what I could learn from it.
I don't think I learnt much that was new, but it did confirm a lot of the things I've read elsewhere.
I think what you do learn from reading a lot of writing books is there are certain things that are common to many of the books, ideas, tips, techniques and so on (even though they are often called by different names in the various books) and if you can absorb these things, then you can make progress.

Just startedFiction Unboxed.

message 8338: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just started re-reading Nicci french and started with Losing You, which I thought was brilliant. I read it all in just one day, and couldn't put it down!! Just started the next - Until It's Overwhich I'm having the same problem with. shame it's a work day today.

message 8339: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished What Could Possibly Go Wrong..., which was good, but not as good as his non-car review column collections.

Just started Britain BC: Life in Britain and Ireland Before the Romans.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Finished Alex Cross, Run. Best Cross book I've read this year, hope the fourth is as good. Next book is the fourth Cross book, next kindle book is Depraved Difference by J Robert Kennedy

message 8341: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Just finished Revival by Stephen King. I maintain that he weaves a story better than anyone alive but he writes some feeble endings. So many times he build and builds and... it's a giant spider, it's a swarm of bees, it's giant ants. Still, he's Stephen King so he can write what he wants. Characters superb, setting superb, plot great, ending a bit daft.

message 8342: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Just started Mark Billingham's From the Dead. Very tidy opening scene and I've enjoyed other books of his that I've read.

message 8343: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Byrne (katarina66) | 49 comments The Fish Can Sing by Halldór Laxness Have to do this for my class. I am enjoying it.
Just finished The Reznik Proposal. (The Rivlin MissionsTrilogy) by Alex Kenny Great adventure story, but more of a man's book I think.

message 8344: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Paul Levinson's The Plot to Save Socrates which is time-travel, sci-fi, history, philosophy... great stuff!

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Until It's Overand started What To Do When Someone Diesboth by Nicci French and I'm really enjoying it. I'm so used to reading series books I'd forgotten what it's like to read completely stand alone ones. The story telling is very compelling and psychologically based which I really enjoy. All in the first person too!
