David Hadley Just finished Revival, which I liked a lot.

Just started Flashman, which has begun well with drink and debauchery, much like this group really.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments If debauchery includes crisps, I'm in!

message 8203: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Just finished Violence Begets... - gripping but a tad repetitive and contrived,

Just started Ostland

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've definitely not read Hearts in Atlantis before. At about 50% in, it became an entirely different book. I'm enjoying this part more than the last part.

Anyone else read it?

message 8205: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finishedSmarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better, which is a sort of counterpoint to those that claim technology is making us stupider. A nice read.

Just started The Trouble with Europe: Why the EU isn't working, How it can be reformed, What could take its place, which may be interesting... or not.

message 8206: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Just finished Imperfect Strangers which I enjoyed very much.
Just started The Secret History

Loretta (lorettalivingstone) | 419 comments Just finished Just a Little Run Around the World 5 Years, 3 Packs of Wolves and 53 Pairs of Shoes by Rosie Swale Pope Incredibly inspiring. Gutsy lady.
Will probably be starting " When Faith Gets Shaken by Patrick Regan as I am about to attend the book launch for this tonight. What a lucky duck! My husband got an invite for himself and a spare. So excited.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Finally finished Little Women, not really my cup of tea. Now starting a Kerry Wilkinson omnibus, think I got it 2 years ago in a kindle sale, first 3 for 99p

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Third Rule - Part Two Running Scared by Andrew Barrett

I've just finished reading the second book in Andrew Barrett's 'The Third Rule' series The Third Rule - Part Two: Running Scared and it's an excellent and tightly written thriller:

I enjoyed Rosie's story too. I just can't imagine me doing anything even remotely similar. We like watching Ice Road Truckers and when you see the roads they travel down, a little tent with Rosie in it seems unreal.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I've finished Crosshairs - J.A. Schneider and is now reading The Good Girl - Mary Kubica.

message 8212: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Flashman, which I thought was pretty good.

Now reading Taken for Dead, the 4th Katie Maguire book - the first 3 being rather good.

message 8213: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished a couple of books which were great reads.
Convergence by Michael Patrick Hicks and Inquisitor by GJ Reilly.
Each very different but engaging. That's what I like!

message 8214: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I have finished the action packed Raney & Levine - J.A. Schneider. Now I am going back to reading The Good Girl - Mary Kubica (once I buy the Amazon copy in morning). So I'm not sure what to start til then lol. As soon as I know, I will tell ya ;) xx

message 8215: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Finished Kate Ellis' A Painted Doom and Julie Grasso's Stellarcadia: the first was the usual good mixture of police procedural and archaeology, and the second was an entertaining adventure for space elves on a hijacked hyperspace flight. Started The Factory on the Cliff by A.G. Macdonell, a golden age thriller set in Aberdeenshire.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Top Banana by the well-known Kath Middleton - good stuff! Still enjoying Faust 2.0 and A Long Time Dead (having a bit of a GoodReads Author fest at present).

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've finally got round to reading Wool Omnibus On book 3 now.
It's okay but I'm not sure if it's deserving of all the hype it got.
Seems a bit, I dunno, flat.

message 8221: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Story: Style, Structure, Substance, and the Principles of Screenwriting which was excellent. Highly recommended for anyone interested in writing stories. Although, it is mainly concerned with scriptwriting for films, it is more about the how and why of what makes a story work.

Just started The 90-Day Novel: Unlock the story within.

message 8222: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Charles Middleworth by Guy Portman

I've posted my review for Guy Portman's Charles Middleworth, it's an excellent read and a little bit different:

Michael Brookes (technohippy) What It Means To Survive by Lucas Bale

I've just finished reading Lucas Bale's excellent sci-fi survival novella What It Means To Survive - check out my review here:

message 8224: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Taken for Dead which is the fourth in the Irish detective Katie Maguire series, which are all excellent and highly recommended. Although, Masterton started out as a horror writer, so they can get a bit gory and most men will read the second book in the series with their legs crossed.

Just started Station Eleven.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Finished Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (sorry, my phone doesn't want to add the link), which I loved. Excellent story.

Now on Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner, about smugglers and hidden treasure, because it is set where my parents live and I am visiting them. 65% through. Rather enjoyable.

I read Moonfleet at school and had nightmares for months! I was a delicate child ...

message 8231: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments A TV programme where a man climbed through a window terrified me as a child, Lexie :-)

message 8232: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I remember being scared by Moonfleet too, but couldn't tell you what it's about.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "I remember being scared by Moonfleet too, but couldn't tell you what it's about."

The main thing I remember is underground tunnels. It set me up for life as a claustrophobe, that and the fact that we read Tom Sawyer the same year.

message 8234: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I have finished the amazing If I Could... - Rene D. Schultz. Now I am going to carry on reading Embryo 4: Catch Me - J.A. Schneider.

message 8235: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Andrew Barrett's A Long Time Dead, where the main character is a SOCO in the north of England. Very much enjoyed it. About to start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - up to date as usual!

I don't like to be personal, but I'm guessing you're aged over 12!

message 8239: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I have finished the intensed Embryo 4: Catch Me - J.A. Schneider. Now I am off to listen/read The Good Girl - Mary Kubica. Then tomorrow hopefully I will read EMBRYO 5: SILVER GIRL - J.A. Schneider.

Well ... yes. At 45 I was not scared, but I was really touched. I even cried over a couple of parts of it.

It must have been good - I can still remember the feel of it and the main character, even years later, quite apart from the nightmares!

message 8242: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Michael's Faust 2.0, which has left me wondering whether I should be online at all!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Managed a few this week, started with the first 3 D'S Jessica Daniels books, very enjoyable even if the DS was so headstrong she got in stupid situations. Then a short Minette Walters book who's name escapes me. Then my first 5* book of the year, The Back Road by Rachel Abbott, Only the Innocent certainly wasn't a one hit wonder. Now 80% into Dead Man's Grip by Peter James

message 8244: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments I have read and finished EMBRYO 5: SILVER GIRL - J.A. Schneider. Now I think I might carry on reading Missing Gretyl - Only Fools and Trollops - Si Page.

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Just started Revival by Stephen King last night. Immediately hooked. No other author does that for me except, occasionally, Ian Rankin. As such I'm logging off now, opening a bottle of beer and reading as much as I can before I fall asleep.

message 8246: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished The Trouble with Europe: Why the EU isn't working, How it can be reformed, What could take its place, which was pretty good.

Just started What Could Possibly Go Wrong. . . which does - at the moment - seem rather a prescient title.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finally finished Wool. Not gonna bother to do a link. It could have been okay but the last 60% was bloated dreck.

I skip read the last 40% just to get through it.

So not recommended.

Oh.

I thought Wool was okay when I read it. Although, now, in retrospect I think you could have a point about the bloat.

message 8250: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments There were huge, great chunks that did nothing to further the story.

Never seen a book so in need of an editor with a felt pen. Or three. Or one with a huge ink reservoir.

Shame as the concept was really good.
